I had the sashimi and my daughter had the salmon don. I am not a fan of the tuna so had it substituted with salmon with no issues. The portions are generous and the fish is fresh. Lunch special is a bargain also.

Best Japanese Asian Fusion restaurant around! 5 Stars all around, you will not be disappointed by anything they have to offer. This is my absolute favorite Japanese restaurant; whenever I order from anywhere else I feel like I am cheating on Hot Ginger. Everything about this place is wonderful: the food, the atmosphere and the service. I have never tried anything here that I did not love. I order take out from here at least 4 times a month and sometimes I’ll sit down and eat. My favorite dishes include the Pad Thai, Malaysia style lo mein and the Malaysian noodles. Their sushi is A grade sushi and they never fail to present such pretty plates either! My favorite is their house roll the Hot Ginger Signature roll, but you can never go wrong with their Maki Combo D either filled with my favorite spicy sushi rolls! The lunch specials won’t disappoint either; all the portions are regular sized dinner portions and offer an appetizer AND a soup! Their appetizer selection includes a Kani Salad, which I have never seen before at any Japanese restaurant offered as an appetizer with a special like such. The restaurant is cute and quaint with wonderful décor & led by some of the nicest people. Their main waitress Rachel is the sweetest woman ever and every time I come in she greets me by name and makes the experience more enjoyable. I am so happy this restaurant is here and doing well. Prior to this restaurant there was sushi places in this location before that came and went and now finally we have Hot Ginger, one of the best around!

Rolls were all delicious. I got the kandy, lemon beach, and green smurf rolls as part of the 3 for $ 29.95 deal(with tax– $ 32). A little pricey but so delicious u won’t regret it.

Friends recommended this place to us, so I stopped in to pick up an order recently. The gyoza were good, but those are really hard to mess up! Unfortunately I cannot begin to remember the different rolls we sampled, just that they were all fresh and really good. The service was great, the woman who took my order was so nice, even offering me some green tea while I waited.

I don’t mean to diss other reviewers but somebody gotta be honest here. This place is super disappointing and food is terrible. The service is friendly and they are very nice but I am so sorry I cannot give any more stars. I think If this place had 3 stars review then I wouldn’t be too disappointed but seeing the 4.5 stars, I had to give low review so nobody feels the disappointment I felt. We got 3 rolls specials and when they arrived, the rolls were so skinny. I had one piece and right there we knew we would never come back. Their rice is terrible. It’s hard and over cooked, they rolled it so tightly that they became glue. Taste just like those pre-made rolls sold at supermarket. «Nasty». Most important thing about sushi is cooking the rice right and they completely failed on that part. It’s unbelievable how ppl think their food is good or even decent! It’s soooo bad.

I had higher expectations for this place due to their glowing reviews on Unilocal. Food, presentation, portions, and service was very sub par. They recommended calamari for an appetizer which was probably frozen. I felt that the rice was a hit hard and too sticky. Also, the soy sauce they used was dark and overwhelming.

This review is for their take out only. My friend and I needed a quick sushi fix so we decided to order from here since they’re located up the block. We ordered the 3 special rolls combo for $ 29.95: King of the Queen — shrimp tempura, cucumber, spicy crabmeat, scallion, tobiko, crunch, eel sauce, and spicy mayo Fox Lady — spicy salmon, mango, crunch, avocado, grilled shrimp, tobiko, and scallion King Kong — spicy lobster, mango, crunch, avocado, tobiko, and mango sauce They came in a nicely packed bento box with a generous amount of wasabi and soy sauce(some places skimp on these necessities!) I was pleasantly surprised with how pretty the rolls looked because you don’t usually get that kind of quality/presentation in the area(especially for take out). As for taste, the rolls were delicious. The avocados melted in your mouth and the mango sauce wasn’t overwhelmingly sweet. The grilled shrimp on the Fox Lady roll was a little too rubbery/tough IMO but other than that I enjoyed the roll. Overall, I would definitely order from here again if I was ever looking for good quality speciality rolls and quick service.

This small little fusion place is amazing. On the weekends it can get extremely crowded and many of the customers are locals. It’s nice when I see staff greeting people they recognize. The sushi here is really really great. It’s fresh and they have great combinations. I get take out from here once in awhile and it’s the only place for a few blocks that has a decent pad thai. Not that it has good Thai food but when you have a craving Hot Ginger will satisfy it! So if you come, definitely get some sushi because that is the best here.

If I was ever in the Oakland Gardens location, this place isn’t bad. I wasn’t really in the mood for sushi but had dinner here that night. The décor is very trendy and the bathroom is really clean. So what did I try? — Green Smurf roll: so famous, but did it taste good? Surprisingly fresh, it was spicy but not too spicy, making it very palatable. — Spider roll: the soft shell crab was delicious and the sauce was sweet and tasty. — Pongko Spring roll: a very spruced-up Shrimp tempura roll. — Pistachio torte: the ice cream was so-so, wasn’t as smooth as I was expecting and more on the grainy end. Very pretty though.

Had dinner there on Sat night with the family. Had sushi deluxe platter with spicey tuna rolls. I wanted uni, so i order 2 pieces. Yelliw rail appetizer is something that should be a signature dish for this restaurant. Had the lamb chop entrée and a tempura platter. We also order the house pork ribs(deep fried seasoned ribs) very tasty and with a bit of heat in the end. the small sushime and sushime deluxe platter and a few beers I wil start by saying that the Sea Urchin(Uni) appetizer is certainly not worth the price, the quality was subpar, very metallic taste. I can only assume its a frozen item. Fresh Sea Urchin has a delicate and distinct taste of sweet fish roe. Subtle but silky and when combine with the rice and sea weed wrap, it is harmoneous on your palate. The edamame was freshly steam with just a hint of sea salt in a small bambu bowl. The yellow tail or Hamachi karma is a fantastic fish, it is the collar of the yellow tail fish. Delicate, a bit on the oily side but what i will say is when its broiled the same oils from the fish, act as a brulee to further infuse flavor into the fish. The fish has a lot of bones, the skin is crispy and the meat is very tender. I would recomend this appetizer due to its size as a meal. Even the kids that dont like fish ate it… The sushime offred on both plates is yellow tail(buttery goodness) pieces of white tuna(tasty but not my favorite) sliced pieces of octopus(chewy but very mild in flavor) and salmon(totally delish) so definate worth it. The lambchops, i did not try. My wife said they were very good. Just salt, pepper, onion, green peppers. extremely tasty. Difficult to impress her with food, since she is a talented cook that can fend for herself in the kitchen at a professional level. The tempura basket had sweet potato, asparagus, string beans, fingerling potato and shrimp. Was good but not my favorite. Everything had a nice crunch not very oily. Overall we were stuffed. I have to say i did not get my favorite server Rachel. Instead there was a male server assisting our table. Nice guy, juat did not catch his name. The server did bring our kids a free dessert, which was a nice touch. Genuine care and the kids were thrilled see it and eat it. Consistent service, variety on the menu and the staff is caring

Great service! The staff was very friendly and patient. We had Kitchen Special, Lion King Roll, which had shrimp tempura and avocado wrapped in cucumber and drizzled in spicy mayo and eel sauce. I ate a piece wirhout much expectation and I was pleasantly surprised. Whoever thought of using cucumber as a wrap is a genius! Cucumber adds another dimension to the texture, and I was in love! Chicken Pad Thai — Hot Ginger makes their pad thai a bit spicy. I personally enjoy moist, sweet and sour type of pad thai so I was not a fan. My parents liked it though. Spicy seafood Udon — it was a big bowl with good proportions of veggies, noodles and seafood. This is not your traditional Japanese Udon so give it a try if you like spicy + sour Will visit again to try another Kitchen Special(and to fill up my stamp card)

Hot Ginger is one of the better Japanese restaurants around the area. The interior is nice. I’ve come here a couple of times with my family. Just a heads up, they take a LONG time to prepare the food and get it to your table. Expect a long wait, hope you aren’t hungry! They offer a 3 roll special — they’re okay but I expect better. Their special rolls aren’t that creative, I order three different ones, they look/taste more or less the same. They tend to have a heavy hand on the sauces they put into the rolls, that totally ruins the flavor of the sushi. I always get their curry beef for my grandpa who doesn’t like sushi. It was very good the first time we had it, the steak was tender(we had medium rare) and the curry sauce was just perfect. And it was relatively consistent the next several times I’ve gone back. But very recently we ordered a takeout, and the dish has shrunk in considerable size!!! The meat looked different(still steak, but different type of cuts), it was a different part smaller and the sauce was little. Not sure if that’s how it is for take out, but I was very disappointed.

One of the best sushi places in the Bayside /Oakland Garden area. Their sashimi is fresh and served in an ice bowl(with a light bulb underneath that changes color!) Special rolls are 3 for $ 30, including the Lobster Tempura, which was our favorite. Unfortunately, you can’t get multiples of the same roll. Each sashimi order comes in 2 medium-sized pieces. They also have free delivery if you live in the area. Otherwise there’s a fee. Our sashimi didn’t taste very fresh by the time it arrived. Wish it came with an ice bowl too. Highly recommend for dine in only! The place is pretty trendy and intimate for dates or small groups. Waitress service can be a hit or miss. But ample parking space in the rear lot!

I have really mixed feelings for Hot Ginger. First the name is way too long. It’s hard to remember. I keep on referring to this restaurant as «Ginger-something». I guess I can just call it Hot Ginger. I had a day off to take care of stuff at home so I took a drive to Hot Ginger to get some lunch today. I ordered two lunch specials, the«any three rolls-choose from the Roll & Hand Roll» section of the menu $ 10.95 and the Chicken Pad Thai $ 8.95. The lunch special runs 7 days a week from 11:30 am to 3:30 pm. You get to choose from 3 soups: Miso, Wonton and Tom Yum Soup. You also get to choose from a nice array of appetizers: edamame, mixed green salad, seaweed salad, kani salad, suimai and thai spring roll. It’s a pretty nice lunch special. I love that they have lunch specials everyday. I hope they never change that part. I drove over 20 minutes out of my way just because I like their idea of running lunch specials 7 days a week. I choose to have the wonton soup and spring rolls with both orders just to make things easy. The food came in bento boxes. It was cute. I had the California roll, sweet potato roll and the futomaki roll. First, let me say I am not a sushi snob. The rolls at Hot Ginger were the best rolls I had in a long, long, long time. I wish I Iived closer and I wish Hot Ginger was near my job. Oh man it was delicious. Most restaurants when they have 3 rolls for around the $ 10 mark, is at best, mediocre. I hardly ever go back because most places their rolls are not worth my energy. The special at Hot Ginger at $ 10.95 is not unusual. But what is awesome about Hot Ginger is the skill at which it is made. The rolls were all tight and perfect. The rolls were not full of rice. There was just the perfect amount of rice and the roll was full of filling. It was awesome. See photos . I hope they keep on making their rolls this way forever. Rating: 5 out of 5 Here is where the mixed feelings come in… the chicken Pad Thai, did not have the correct Pad Thai flavor at all. Not going to order it again. It was edible but just didn’t taste like Pad Thai. Rating: 2 out of 5 I haven’t ran into an Asian Fusion restaurant that made everything on their menu well. Maybe it’s not possible? No one can do everything well. Same at Hot Ginger. The spring rolls were adequate. Two came with the order. They were crunchy and tasted okay. All in all, I was really happy with the rolls and I would trek out to Oakland Gardens for more rolls again. See you soon Hot Ginger! Overall score: 3.5 rounded up to 4 because the rolls were awesome.

It’s Mother’s Day, May 2015, and with that in mind and knowing that the restaurant crowds would be dense in the downtown Flushing area, I sought some place away from the madness to enjoy some downtime with my mom to celebrate her day. Both she, my husband and I were craving Japanese and luckily discovered Hot Ginger on Unilocal. After a 15 minute(reasonable) drive from Flushing, we slipped into some street parking in front of the restaurant.(Parking is also available in the rear.) The restaurant looked small and unassuming from the outside, but once we entered in, a slightly dim, ambient yet intimate atmosphere welcomed us. A few tables were occupied, and we were promptly seated, given menus and asked for our preferred drinks. Service continued to be attentive throughout our meal. Ivy, you’re great! As for the food: The three of us ordered from the lunch special menu, which allowed us options of a soup, appetizer and entrée(including sushi rolls), starting at $ 8.95. This sounded like a shoo-in as a good value for us, which was confirmed when we received our orders– Wonton soup– The wonton soup had just enough flavor without it being salty although it was disappointing with two wontons. The bean sprouts in the soup added some texture. The seaweed salad/mixed greens salad– This was standard fare. Still yummy, but they tasted like something I had before. Black bean chicken– My mom ordered this along with the request of brown rice on the side. At first glance, the dish looked very salty since the black bean sauce coated the whole portion of chicken slices and vegetables; upon tasting it, I found it to be a balanced mixture of salty and sweet, without one overpowering the other. Peanut chicken– I had this with a side of white rice. It came stirred with peppers, onions and spring beans and enough chicken that I had to pack what I had left to go. Peanut sauce wasn’t too peanut buttery and had a hint of the Thai peanut sauce I find in markets. Yummy. Three rolls(Alaskan, shrimp tempura and salmon): My husband dug into this dish eagerly. He commented how he liked it, how it was made really well and that the sushi makers seemed to pack the rolls fully without skimping on ingredients. The rolls looked so good that I had to «steal» three pieces. If the quality and offerings here continue to be like my experience today, I’ll definitely be back.

My wife and I were on our way in to the city for a nice dinner in the LES but quickly canceled that when we saw the insane traffic coming in from the north. We took a little detour and decided to go to Bayside for some sushi. Looked through Unilocal and Sushi bell popped up. It’s significantly further down the road than the«downtown bayside» area, but well worth the trip. We showed up and drove around the block to be greeted by a huge parking lot… huge bonus. Walked in and saw that there were alot of folks there. another good sign. The special sushi rolls are well priced! 3 for $ 30 and they’re huge! We also had an order of their glazed ribs… they were so soft! Some of the best that i’ve ever had. Next time I come here, I will ask them to give me the whole rack :). We ended our meal with their green tea tempura ice cream. ORGASMIC. One of the best that I’ve ever had. YOUNEEDTOCOMEHEREASAP! Dinner for two with a 25% tip was $ 60.

Smokin Hot Ginger Good for a small group of four or less. The size of their regular lunch rolls are twice the size of other comparable sushi joints. I tried a variety of menu items here. Their roll with seared tuna with a cracked pepper mayo was a little too heavy on the sauce. The sweetness of the yuzu on the sexy lazy roll can almost make it a dessert. It looked sexy but didn’t really look lazy. I think the lazy refers to the food coma you will certainly endure afterwards. I wouldn’t get this one again. The green smurf roll was delicious and if smurfs were green they’d approve as well. I enjoyed the nuttiness added by the use of crushed wasabi peas. The fresh green-ness of the dish was also visually appealing. Their grand manier prawns were delicious. I like that they lightly drizzle the sauce on top of the delicately fried prawns and provide you with the sauce on the side. I applaud their attention to detail for this dish. Their Xinjiang pork buns had a sensually smoky flavor which made the dish addictive. Baos or buns or whatever you wanna call them are provided on the side. There is also a sweet and sour sauce on the side which in my opinion is not necessary because of the robust flavor of the dish. The Xinjiang province of China has historically been a hub for cultural diffusion hearkening back to the tumultuous times of the Silk Road. I feel that Marco Polo would have loved the explosion of umami fused into this dish. The indonesian style chicken for lunch tastes like a refined General Tso’s chicken strips. The chicken is fried in long strips which adds a fun textural dimension to this familiar taste. Their pad Thai didn’t really taste authentic and wouldn’t order it again. I was hopelessly searching for the sweetness usually associated with the flavor profile. Overall, I’m definitely a fan and a new loyal customer. The service is good here, and they always ask if you have any food allergies. Don’t forget to get your loyalty card signed and stamped.

Terrific specialty rolls– best place around town and I’ve tried a lot of them. We got the green smurf roll which was unlike anything I’ve ever had before. Also got the dumplings which were so good. Atmosphere is great and service was very good too. I’ll definitely be back and I plan on trying all of their specialty rolls– 30 $ for 3– cant beat that!
