This is a brand new owner here in Oakdale. Brings a very powerful menu to the customers and you will not be disappointed. Do not be fooled by the glitz of other places. The food speaks for itself. In addition, the service is very good!

Inviting environment with delicious and craftily made fresh sushi and sashimi and fusion style appetizers. Service is awesome and the owner is charming. My girlfriend and I had a splendid dinner tonite!

Came here on a weekend and we were the only ones there. Service was okay but I didn’t get a friendly vibe. The rice for the sushi wasn’t sticky and kept falling off our rolls and swimming in the soy sauce. Fish tasted okay. The house salad was huge. Good ginger dressing. I wouldn’t go out of my way to return here, although I noticed they had private-ish areas where you actually sit on the floor around a table and eat! I haven’t seen that before but know that’s a thing.

By far, our favorite place to go. The private booths are a fun and unique experience. The food is delicious, and they offer unique sushi rolls. We’ve loved everything we’ve ordered!

We were Tai Show regulars until feeling bored with their lack of specials and never changing menu. We took to Onsen down the road, and LOVE it. However, when Ichiban opened, we gave it a try. It was ok. Just ok. Recently, we decided to give it yet another try. It will be our last. The fish was fresh, for sure. However, the rice was unbelievably sticky. We eat a lot of sushi, both here on LI and in Manhattan. Never had rice like this. Being fair, maybe it was an off day for rice. That alone wouldn’t necessarily stop me from trying it yet again. What DID stop me from ever going back was when the owner took out a ladder, and spent our entire meal DRILLING into the soffit above the sushi case. Our ENTIRE meal! And our table was right there by the sushi bar. The waitress looked mortified. We said ‘seriously?’ And she just smiled and walked away. No apology. No whisper to the owner to stop. We could have/should have been annoyed. Instead, we laughed and just agreed to never return. Oh, and to expand on my point: it wasn’t JUST the noise and rudeness we took issue with. Again, the drilling was taking place DIRECTLY over the sushi bar! The sushi IS behind glass, but the prep area ISNOT! He put no drop cloth down, nor did we see any clean up after. Ichiban…do your repairs and such BEFORE or AFTER your paying customers are there! One more thing: the music was a radio station with lousy pop music… commercials, static, and all. Really made the experience even worse! It always amazes me when restaurants don’t recognize how important music is! I AM happy to see that others have given Ichiban good reviews. I certainly want any business in my neighborhood to remain open. I’m happy if they succeed… I just will not be returning.

I eat a lot of sushi and have been to many Japanese restaurants; some are very good, but most are just mediocre or below standard and just a handful that are exceptional. Ichiban is one of the exceptional! It is by far the best Japanese restaurant I have been to in Long Island. I would have never expected to find such a high quality Japanese Sushi Restaurant in Long Island. The restaurant has a nice décor, sushi bar, private rooms, spacious and comfortable chairs. The service was great, waitresses are friendly and tentative. That’s all important but the most impressive is their food. The chef in Ichiban transforms every piece of fish, seafood or meat into a piece of art while delivering tastes and textures that stimulate all your senses and satisfy your sophisticated palate. The fish, seafood and ingredients are all extremely fresh and each dish is delivered at the perfect temperature. You can tell the chef puts his heart in every dish and takes proud in his work. The appetizer specials are great and worth trying them all if you have a big appetite. A few of my favorites are the fried oyster, yellowtail jalapeño, blue crab fajita, rock shrimp tempura and the must try Toro Tar Tar and Filet Mignon Tataki which has the perfect crust outside and the meat that just melts in your mouth. It was so good, we ordered a second. For the rolls, I would highly recommend the summer roll which uses a rice wrap, instead of the traditional seaweed roll, with lobster, shrimp and avocado inside instead of rice. The roll is very light and refreshing yet full of the sweetness from the lobster and shrimp. The American dream roll and the Peter roll are also phenomenal. The American roll is crunchy in the inside but smooth and sweet on the outside from the lobster cover topping. The Peter roll is the perfect roll for seafood and meat lover. It’s wrapped with filet mignon, what more do I need to say? Finally the sushi and sashimi, just order any fish you like. They are all are extremely fresh. We had the sashimi for 2 and the quality of the fish are top notch and tasted like they just came out of the ocean. Ichiban truly exceeded all my expectations. My believe of Long Island will never have any exceptional Japanese sushi restaurant no longer holds true. Ichiban has finally broken through that barrier and can measure up to any top Japanese restaurants in the food mecca of NYC. I will certainly be back very soon to try out the rest of the items on the menu.

My husband and I have been eating at this restaurant(formerly Tai Show East) about once a week for over 12 years. When the previous owner sold and closed down abruptly for«renovations» for an entire summer we were pretty upset and started trying new places. ALLDISAPPOINTINGFAILS! Then we found out it was sold and was going to be Ichiban sushi. We were devastated. We thought our favorite rolls and fresh sushi were gone forever. When they finally reopened, we were extremely happy to see our favorites were still on the menu(team havoc roll, Alan roll, sweet heart roll)!!! Although The Cooper Roll which was only recently added to the menu took us about ten years of ordering as a a special roll(yes we created it) was not added to the new menu, we forgive them and are still creating it each time we order. If you like the fresh taste of each individual ingredient in each piece versus a roll covered in sweet sauces and spicy mayo with zero distinction between rolls then this is your place. We are happy to receive coupons and advertisements in the mail as well. Hopefully the new owners can keep our favorite sushi spot open for atleast another 12 years!

The fish is fresh and delicious. Not a ton of rolls, but definitely quite a few decent ones. And, the prices are not bad at all either.

The former Tai Show East is now Ichiban. The interior looks exactly the same from the booths in the front to the hibachi in the back with the fish tanks in the middle. Quality of the food is about the same too. Gyoza were not too crispy and not too soggy. Tekka don was fresh, but I was expecting a nice bowl of sushi rice with raw tuna on top but was basically was served tuna sashimi with a tiny amount of rice on the side. The rolls, though fresh are a bit on the smaller side as well. Luckily, prices are low so if you leave still hungry, you won’t feel that ripped off. Service was friendly.

Best sushi from Oakdale to Patchogue. Came on Tuesday, fish was fresh and did not smell. Really enjoyed the Sushi Love Boat for 2.

It is amazing such a big improvment that the new owner has made. The fish is EXTREMELY fresh now. We are eating raw fish and the minimum requirement should be that the fish is fresh. However as you know, it is actually not very easy to find a Japanese restaruant to serve fresh fish. The new owner stands out in freshness. Not only fresh, but the quality is as superb. I am shocked that Toro here is not inferior to those in Ushiwakamaru or Yasuda. The sushi comes out at the room temperature and the tuna melts more readily on the tongue with buttery flavor. The temperature of the rice is perfect for me and the amount of rice with each piece is also right. The toro texture is compliemented by that acidity from rice’s vinegar. I have had dinners here a couple of times since the new chef took over one or two month ago. I feel the new chef is meticulous and takes care of his fish very carefully, which guarantees freshness and quality of fish. This place is a real gem in my town.

Use to come here for the hibachi which they do at your table. I’m so glad that we got a chance to sit behind the shoji screen, great atmosphere! Amazingly nice staff. The very best part of my trip is the food! HOLYCOW! I branched out and decided that I was going to try something I never had, I chose bed negimaki! Filet mignon wrapped around scallions in a teriyaki sauce! The most amazing thing I have ever eaten in my life! It also included a nice salad with ginger dressing best I ever had! I also had miso soup. My husband had chicken and shrimp teriyaki! I have NEVER seen him so in love with food. I’m usually the foodie. I would go back everyday of the week! The price was low and the good was beyond expectations! It really makes you think about picking something other then what you always chose when you go to the same place for years. Go ahead wonder the menu it can be a great idea!

This guy took over the old Tai Show East building/business. For the most part the inside hasn’t changed a bit, fish tank is still there, sushi bar is same, private booths still there. The only thing the new owners did was remove the Hibachi section/tables. Overall the Sushi was fresh and lives up to the quality of what it was previously. Unlike the old owners who dumped most of their money/resources into their most successful(Massapequa) location, the new owner genuinely cares about the place, and it definitely shows. Also as a nice bonus he is offering a 10% discount off the check for a limited time to let everyone know he is open.

Am I the first? AM I THEFIRST! Oh, no, second one to give review. Maybe I am too excited. After dining here twice since it opened a weeks ago. I couldn’t wait to share my experience with Ichiban sushi. I am a firm believer that cuisine has to be authentic, the rest I simply call it ‘food’. And I used to think there is a geographic line for Japanese cuisine in the region of tristate, the line sort of circle from Fort Lee, NJ, and and stop just a little over East River. Last Sunday after I tried the à la carte sashimi and sushi, the geographic line of authentic Japanese cuisine is now extended to far beyond East river to Oakdale. I am going to save words to describe the food, because I am heading out to Ichiban again.
