CLOSED!!! NOOOOOOOOOOO!!! :-(How can this possibly be!!! Well. this place was 5 star NOLA sushi once upon a time.Now.Yokohama is retired to the ghostly graveyard of dead New Orleans businesses. Sadly, it makes the hotel on Baronne Street to which it was attached even less appealing now… Time to hunt new haunts. but I had more than a few good meals here at this location. New location anywhere else? Did they move?

I went here once on a Friday evening(6ish) with a group of 7 from work. This may factor into the pros and cons. Reasons to go: 1) Decent food; had better sushi at other places but it wasn’t bad 2) The prices were average. They weren’t pricey but close enough 3) The sake selection was pretty good as well as their bottled imports 4) Kept my water filled up the whole time Reasons to avoid: 1) Weird atmosphere; may have to do with the location(in between a hotel and an office building) 2) Weird regulars. The staff treated a few people sitting alone like they knew them but they sat alone… and watched. Normally loners don’t creep me out but I got a vibe from these dudes. 3) Took awhile to handle the tip and she seemed frustrated we didn’t drink more

service wasn’t as good as Geisha Sushi Bistro down the street, but I like the sushi here better and price a bit cheaper but still pricey for me, I love sushi, so I experiences better. Came at lunch time and order togo, place doesn’t seem pack at all but the server kinda lagging, and only one chef to serve all customer, so it was quite a wait for my togo…

I really like the staff and food here… i live in the area and get take out and dine in often. the staff is so friendly, the sushi chefs are so nice and take pride in their craft. i have never had a bad meal… nothing high end, but fresh and good! the décor is a little dated and not a place i would go for a fine dinning night… but lunch and the sushi bar by myself or with a few friends is just fine. go try them out… i really do enjoy the food and service

I came here for lunch and had their grilled salmon bento box. The price was right for what I got. Soup, salad, California sushi rolls, and grilled salmon. The salad and the soup were forgettable, but the rolls and the sushi were a good deal for under $ 10. Service was prompt. Decent place to sushi if you’re staying in the hotel or work in the area. I don’t think it’d be a place to go out of your way for though.

The food was very decent and not overly priced. The service was good, but food prep was a little slow, especially because it was nearly empty. The decore was average but sort of junky with boxes here and there, and a corner more or less stuff they couldn’t where to stack.

I ordered the sushi box lunch from Yokohama. For $ 12 I received soup, salad, a dumpling appetizer, one California roll, 4 sashimi pieces, and melon for dessert. It was pretty good. I’ll order from there again.

Yokohama is pretty good. And has good bang for the buck. The ambiance is a bit strange. It’s sort of in a hotel lobby, but its entrance feels more like that of an abandoned building. I’ve had a bento box, the sushi lunch, and several rolls. I can say that all was pretty good but portion size is a bit small(especially for the lunches). That said, the price is right. I have had very good service. While the servers’ English is difficult to understand, they are very attentive. Service is quick for lunch. I wouldn’t do a 30 minute lunch there, but 45 minutes is plenty of time. There are a couple of other sushi places I prefer in the CBD, but I’ll continue to go to Yokohama occasionally.

Review based on take-out only. This was a weird little spot, but I liked it. Called in the order from our hotel(Holiday Inn Superdome, right up the street), and left immediately to walk down to pick it up. Pulled out the iPhone to route it, and upon reaching destination was confused. I turned around, and there it was behind me — a weird downtown business district entrance. There was a guy crouching down smoking a cigarette outside the building. Asked if I was there for the restaurant — I said yes and he pointed to the door. Went inside and one table had some diners — didn’t see anybody working, so I waited. The dude from outside came in, said the order would be right up. He disappeared into the back for about a minute and a half and came out with my order. Like this guy was the host, the waiter and the cook! I guess with just one table, they didn’t need a full staff. Skeptical, I wal;ked the food back to my hotel — passed through some movie-set action of some 50-Cent /Bruce Willis movie they were filming — and chowed at the room. The sushi was all real tasty, and the prices were good. Ambience of the restaurant, despite the weird encounter, was pretty nice. Just a weird setting for it. Food probably 4 star, rest of the experience a 3.

If I can give this place a «zero» star, I would. This place has TERRIBLE service. So here it goes… I ordered an appetizer and sushi for my entrée. The waitress brought entrée first saying that the appetizer is coming out. I was like ok. I was almost done with my entrée and it has been more than 5 minutes. So I went up to her saying that I would like to cancel because I’m done with my entrée, and she kept insisting that it’s coming. I firmly told her«No, I don’t want it since I’m done with my entrée.» Then in about several minutes, she brought the appetizer out. I was like wth. She kept arguing with me about it took some time because the fish had to be thawed, etc, etc. I told her that she should have told me earlier when I ordered food. After about 5 minutes of argument, she finally took it away with her nasty facial expression. I really didn’t wanna make a fuss about it, but she went beyond pushing my button. To my dismay, this lady added«gratuity» to my check. I was totally speechless. I told her that I will pay but I cannot pay for gratuity. She asked me what was wrong with her service. Once again, I was amazed at her thick skin. She lied to me saying how all the restaurants in NOLA are supposed to charge gratuity. I know she was bsing b/c I’ve been to restaurants that did not charge gratuity. They threatened me that they would call the police, etc. I was like whatever and paid in cash without leaving her tips. So my breakdown of this restaurant: Authenticity of food: 0⁄5(owned by Chinese peeps) Food: 2⁄5(it’s edible, but it’s nothing close to Japanese cuisine.) Service: 0⁄5 The bottom line is that they know NOLA peeps are not used to having sushi, so they just make sushi in their own way; not to mention they strive to rip visitors off. I will report this place to BBB

I am an unabashed sushi addict and can find some fault with of one sort or another in just about every sushi-ya in town, but Yokohama stands above the rest across the board. Yokohama not only boasts some of the freshest fish I have had in all my years in New Orleans, but the portions are generous and the prices are more than fair. While not strictly the cheapest sushi place in town, the cuts for the nigiri and the rolls along with the quality actually make Yokohama a bargain compared to all the other places in town. The restaurant is located in an area of the CBD that is not the busiest, but the location should not deter any sushi fan from coming in and trying Yokohama. The quality of the fish is exceptional. I suspect the owners must be in very good graces with their seafood distributor, because the quality of the in-season items is always top notch. Anyone who is a fan of Horinoya for the quality of their offerings will not be disappointed by Yokohama. Even though Yokohama offers a wide range of creative rolls that appeal to the American palate, the quality of the nigiri and sashimi is definitely noteworthy and would satisfy the discriminating palate of people who prefer the more traditional, conservative Japanese style sushi-ya. The fresh tuna is consistently top notch and toro is sometimes available. The toro I had at a recent visit was very nicely marbled and tender. The price was fairly reasonable for those who have ever ordered it at other places. Fans of uni will not be disappointed when it comes in, as they are careful not to overstock it as not to have uni that is less than fresh. I find the consistency and the flavor decline fairly quickly, so I would rather have it sporadically as long as it is very fresh. On the nigiri menu, a couple of creative items do stand out that warrant mentioning. First is the«stop light», an rather inventive presentation on a variety of roe and quail egg that looks very much like a stop light on your plate. The roe is served as it usually is sushi-style, but one side is the usual red-dyed roe and the other is the green wasabi tobiko, and a quail egg yolk in the middle provides the yellow light. Clever. The second is the«tear drop,» which offers a generous slice of tuna and a generous slice of fresh salmon, each wrapped with a small amount of rice in a square of nori, seasoned generously with wasabi. The wasabi, however, is not the green paste, but marinated Japanese wasabi root that is applied rather liberally and has a kick that will clear one’s sinuses rather quickly. This is no gimmick, though, as the generous cut of quality fish is not overwhelmed by the wasabi. As for the rolls, as has been noted multiple times, the amiable chefs at Yokohama do not skimp on the fish. Be wary on your first trip if you are accustomed to ordering multiple rolls. The traditional rolls — California, crunchy, dynamite — are all well-represented, and some of the house specialties stand out as well. The house roll — the Yokohama — is a wonderful roll incorporating red snapper that is flash fried. I generally do not like cooked rolls, but both the cooked rolls at Yokohama are inventive and stand out. My favorite is the«heart attack roll» which combines spicy tuna, crab, rice cream cheese and fresh jalapeño inside nori that is very lightly battered and briefly fried. It’s like a jalapeño popper and a dynamite roll fell madly in love and had a beautiful child. Anyway, all this has made me a regular at Yokohama, and everyone I have taken to the restaurant has become a fan. Hopefully, Yokohama will be a fixture in the restaurant scene in New Orleans for decades to come.

One reviewer was very accurate about the thick cuts of fish that you get on rolls. I sat at the bar and saw several rolls assembled and every roll had thick portions of fish. I had the Baronne roll, which has a variety of raw fish on the inside with crab and masago and a spicy wasabi sauce on top — amazing!

I love sushi. Unfortunately, that puts me in a precarious position because it makes me a relatively tough«critic» in the raw-fish food department. I was lucky enough to be living right across the street from Yokohama for a short while. When I was having trouble finding a place to deliver for football, I called them. When I wanted to grab a bite to eat after work, I stopped there. I’m very familiar with New Orleans so it was definitely a good sign for the joint that I ate there more than once. Now on to the important stuff: The sushi rolls here are GOOD. Not great, not bad by any means, but… above average… which makes them good. One delicious specialty roll they have is the Pepper Girl Roll, which I strongly recommend if you’re into spicy stuff. I had their seaweed salad and their dumpling soup, along with the majority of their specialty rolls. I can’t say this place is a MUST for sushi, but its better than the majority of other sushi joints in the city; including the mainstream hippity Rock N’ Sake. My only gripe with this place, and the reason it didn’t get 4 stars: I placed an order and hadn’t stocked up on diet coke, so I ordered four«bottles». The delivery guy brought four 10 Ounce mini glass bottles of DC which looked like they were from the 70’s… and the soda tasted horrible. Get with the times, go green and get some regular 20 oz. bottles of soda and you’ll be a 3.5−4 star Unilocal choice.
