The Old Point Bar is the Algiers Point is a first cousin to Jean Lafitte’s Olde Absinthe House outside the French Quarter; what from the outside might appear as lack of cleanliness they over-compensate for with local flavor, lore, and magnetism.

Dark, check… roomy, check… reasonably priced booze, check… friendly bar staff that were easy on the eyes, check… live music, check… laid back vibe, check… Oh man, what a great place to just hang out, hear some good music and relax with friends… Right down from the Algiers Ferry Terminal this place is a must stop if you’re smart enough to jump on the Canal Street ferry and venture out of NOLA proper and across the Big Muddy to Algiers… You and the friends can make a small bar crawl right near the ferry terminal between this great bar, the Crown and Anchor and the Dry Dock… Has some outside tables if you want the fresh air, big open windows so that even outside you can enjoy the music… All in all this is a wonderful old school NOLA neighborhood bar that’s well worth the visit… Definitely need to add this bar for a day or night trip across the river and away from the crazy that can be NOLA…

The friendliest people ever. We visited NOLA this past week and rented bikes to see as much as possible. Don’t miss the ferry ride to Algiers. Seriously. The residential area is gorgeous with the historic and beautifully decorated homes. It’s quiet and quaint. We rode the bike trail around the levee, which was great. Best bike trail I’ve been on. On the way back through, we caught happy hour at Old Point. Go there. Cheap beers and nice people. It is definitely a locals bar, but they sure were just as nice to us. Great experience.

It is possibly the perfect neighborhood bar now with the smoking ban in Orleans parish. Live music, great jukebox, windows that open when weather is nice and great drink prices. Always filled with nice people from and around The Point.

Great New Orleans dinner. Stick to the hot plate line though. Although the sandwiches are good, they’re just WAY too slow, and nothing to write home about. They’ve got all kinds of people working the kitchen and hot plate line but one lady doing sandwiches, who writes nothing down, and is very overwhelmed. On my last visit the two people I was with finished eating and then sat with me for another 10min or so before I got my poboy(had to switch it to a go order, as we were on lunch break from work). In that time I watched her bring out two separate sandwiches, only to run back to correct them. Stick with the hot plates and you can’t go wrong.

Came here because there was a wreck on the bridge. Awaking building inside and out but the people I met really appitimize the vibe of New Orleans!

This place rocks! Love the free music and decent alcohol prices. Plus it’s right down the street! Can’t wait to come back!

This bar was a lot of fun, but it was so filled with smoke that we couldn’t stay. If you don’t mind the smoke, I definitely recommend it. Otherwise, you might only get a drink or two before choking to death.

I like this bar. Its one of my favorite places to go and get a drink outside and people/dog watch. I love that they have large open windows so when the weather is nice they have them open. The only complaint I have is that they should probably pass a mop occasionally.

This historic dive bar didn’t disappoint on my first visit to Algiers. After seeing it portrayed in several movies, I ventured over to hear my friend sing with NOLA musician, Johnny Angel. The bar is worth the visit, colorful folks, typical dive bar ambiance, and inexpensive drinks. Don’t go anticipating a meal, check out the Dry a Dock for nearby food, all Old Point serves is chips! But, if you’re seeking a phenomenal jukebox, urban grittiness, and dive bar real ness, it’s worth a visit or two. The smoke is not pleasant, my only negative, the reason for four stars!

Awesome Bar! Great on a hot day. Took rental bikes here and had a great time playing pool with wife and local guys. Don’t think there is any food here other than chips but the drinks were good and they accept plastic.

As dive bars go, this is as good as it gets! Old Point Bar is another reason to take the scenic $ 2 ferry ride to Historic Algiers Point. Great selection of cold beer, mixed drinks, live music, friendly locals, pool and Theo’s Pizza on Friday nights. What else do you need?

You gotta go to an old bar and have a local beer, right? Not exactly a thing on my bucket list but since we crossed over on the ferry we had to find something to do .and we were thirsty for a beer. Super casual atmosphere.

It has been 2 years since I reviewed this bar. I am so thankful that it is, unlike so many places, untouched by the bad hiring practices that have caused so many good places to go downhill. Warren and his awesome dog Bo are still around and the vibe is great. We can’t go there right now since we still don’t smoke nor can handle smokey places but for a one night celebration like 4th of July, we will make an acception. The people there are always the best locals ever. I am just saddened by the ferry’s new owners messing everything up due to corporate structure that does not understand NOLA at all. Hope to see you on the 4th. I won’t buy you a beer but I’ll let you buy me one for cluing you in on one the best places to have a good, but calm and gentile time, in NOLA.

This bar is a old and seasoned, but still very much alive. The folks know each other, the drinks are strong and cheap, and everyone’s having a good time. We walked into bar, as the musician was playing and singing«Ode to Billy Joe» on the keyboard. When she segued into Rocky Raccoon, the Lena Horne version, kinda knew I was home. It’s basically everything I thought the South would be. The Algiers Ferry may leave at 5:30, doesn’t mean you have to! Taxis take you back across the river all day and night.

I’ve decided to update this review because my view of the Old Point has changed considerably. I was wrong when I said that unless you live in the area there is no reason to go here. There are a lot of reasons to go here, not the least of which is seeing a variety of different bands and enjoying the New Orleans atmosphere at a neighborhood bar just outside of New Orleans proper. The staff is always friendly and the crowd is a bit older and respectful. My only complaint is the cigarette smoke. I don’t know if it’s a ventilation issue or what, but even if just one person is smoking in there, the entire place fills with smoke. I would love it if they went smoke free or installed some better smoke eaters.

This place was a great stop in Algiers Point. The place is hopping with locals and we were lucky to pop in on Friday night to enjoy a live band. While you wait on the band, the jukebox will keep you going. The bar has a selection of local beers and your favorites as well. This spot has pool and darts. The locals are very friendly and make you feel like you are welcome any time. Luckily, I was staying within walking distance, but this bar is a couple of blocks from the Algiers ferry, giving you a way to get to this little gem and truly enjoy the charm this place has to offer.

I almost don’t want to tell you how much I like this place! Those who have never ventured to Algiers Point are missing out on a cool neighborhood that warrants a walk around, and you’re missing out on one great bar! Old Point is a neighborhood joint, located next to the levee on Patterson. They have a pool table and darts. The beer is cheap, no French quarter prices here. The owner usually can be found on a bar stool with his dog laying by his feet. Yes folks, Old Point is canine friendly. Many movies have been shot here and some of the pictures hang on the walls. Actually, take a close look at the walls… so much randomness. Live music almost every night, and no cover. Just be sure to tip the band, they deserve it. I saw Bottoms Up Blues Gang here on a Friday night for the first time, and they put on a great show. Cool off inside or sit at the sidewalk tables. The bartenders and people who frequent this spot are super friendly. It is everything a NOLA bar should be!

The Old Point Bar is a great example of a neighborhood dive bar. Despite growing up in Algiers, I had never been to this bar. Thanks to the recent west bank bar crawl event(Thanks Marielle S. for the itinerary), I got to find out what I had been missing all these years. As I entered I was surprised at the size of the bar. It is fairly large with very high ceilings. There is a very long bar and several tables. There is also a stage and small area behind the stage with a pool table. One odd thing about the bar was that the men’s restroom door couldn’t be opened all the way. When opening the door it struck the stairway leading to the pool table. I guess this is their way of determining regulars. I obviously was not and when I exited there was a loud thump. Another interesting thing about the bathroom is that they put ice in the urinals. This is a huge plus. If you are a guy, you will enjoy watching the ice melt while you pee. The bartender was friendly, but service suffered so she could take care of regulars first. As obvious outsiders we had to flag her down to get a drink. I can’t hold that against her since if I were a regular, I would expect better service too. Beer was reasonably priced. There was a decent selection of beers, and drafts were around $ 3.50. I enjoyed my time at the Old Point and would gladly come back. If you’re in the point and want a casual, neighborhood dive, give Old Point a try.
