When I lived Uptown I enjoyed going to the Maple Street Book shop starting with the used books side then venturing to the new books side. So imagine my surprise when I loved to Mid-City to discover this quaint Maple Street Book shop! It’s on such a great street near Fair Grinds, Swirl, Canseco’s, Café Degas, Nona Mia etc. I’ve come here and sold books for store credit which helps feed my addiction of books. I’ve decided that my bookshelf is packed so I must get rid of a book before buying a new one(regardless of the books on my shelf that I haven’t read yet!). The staff are helpful and will special order a book for you. They also have great recommendations and don’t mind if you plop yourself and start perusing the books. I can’t think of a better way to spend a lazy afternoon! Happy Reading!

A thoughtfully stocked hole-in-the-wall book shop with an incredibly helpful and friendly staff. If you are on the tourist trail, the shop and it’s neighboring coffee shop, wine bar and restaurants are a perfect place to take a break and do some browsing for that book souvenir, or just something better than the airport racks to read on the way home. Great selection of local titles.

This is the newest and tiniest(well, vying with the Healing Center, I supposed) location of Maple Street Books. It’s tucked in between Canseco’s market and Swirl wines, for all your snacking and reading needs! No, don’t bring food in. That might hurt the books. There is a front and back room, with the shelves and subjects separated and labeled by difficult-to-understand symbols; although I think they went back and wrote words under it. A crow? Is that philosophy or nature? SOCONFUSE. From comics to religious to New Orleans regional books, they have it all, organized from the high ceilings down to kneeling-level shelves. The staff is really nice and happy to help you look for a specific item, give advice or reading suggestions, and, in case of last resort, special order. Unlike Uptown, used and new books are all mixed in together. A red dot on the spine(I believe) indicates a used book. I got a fat copy of Anna Karenina for $ 5 the other day! They’re open 7 days a week, as are all Maple Streets, so if you’re planning to hang out at City Park or Fair Grinds for a lazy Sunday, why not stop in, buy reading material, and support one of our local institutions?

Lovely little independent bookshop in Midcity. The shop itself is small but crammed with an extremely well-curated selection of books. You’ll find New York Times bestsellers nestled in between publications from indie presses and interesting used books. The store is organized more or less by subject, and everything from children’s books to cookbooks are represented here. There’s even a sizable selection of locally-published titles. The staff is helpful but not pushy, and will gladly order anything you’re looking for that they don’t have in stock. There are also awesome greeting cards and postcards that are handmade by one of the employees! And if you sign up for their mailing list you’ll be the first to find out about the events they have — book release parties, author readings, and even the occasional lo-fi acoustic show. In short, this place rules. I can never walk in there without finding at least five or six things that I desperately need. Which is awful for my wallet, stressful for my already-full bookshelf, and great for the shop. Luckily they also accept used books for either cash or store credit. ps. educators get a 10% discount every day!
