We pur on our GPS and found this place and it is great. Poboys sizzling hot with fries for 5.99. We paid 52.00 for similar meal in the quarter. Less than 20 bucks here. Worth finding. The owner cooks it for u when u order it. Great on a budget. Only open lunch hrs during the week or I would go back today.

First off the owner was super nice. I mean the kinda humble niceness that New Orleans has in spades and gets right. The food was exactly what I wanted for a local neighborhood place. Cheap check. Good check. I had the fried shrimp po-boy and it was spot on. The bread and the breaking on the shrimp were awesome cooked perfectly. Do yourself a favor and grab the lunch special 5.99 for a po-boy and fries.

I listen to ESPN radio on a daily basis and last year during the World Cup in Brazil Colin Cowherd said«we [USA] are pretty good. Trust your eyes.» Ever since then I’ve used that line«trust your eyes» for things I can see and I reworded it to «trust your tongue» when I eat. I was working in Chalmette today and had a craving for Buds Broiler. Dead set on Buds I gave a quick scan on Unilocal to find something new that I’ve never had since we have over 1,200 restaurants in Orleans Parish. I found Kayla’s. I saw a few reviews all 5 and 4 stars so I had to give it a try. Talk about a great decision. Mr. Calvin has talent. The man runs his restaurant, named after his daughter, by himself. He does a great job. A former Coca Cola employee he said he had a cooking hobby and wanted to pursue a restaurant. I’m here to tell you he has a cooking talent. I ordered a grilled chicken salad & a shrimp poboy(all Poboys are 6 inches, come with fries, and $ 5.99). He put both the shrimp poboy & salad in front of me and I examined them. I could hear the shrimp sizzle so I knew they were fresh fried & I could see the grill marks on the chicken so I knew that was grilled as well. I knew this was going to be good. I didn’t mention the smell… Ha, that was a treat. The food itself was very good. Hahaha. I’m definitely going back. Perfect size portions for lunch. Not too much to where you have to undo your pants but not too little where you are looking for a snack come 3:00pm. If you are a tourist reading this… Mr. Calvin is the kind of guy that makes New Orleans. A man with a passion pursuing his culinary dreams. GEAUXSEEHIM. If you are local… Mr. Calvin is the guy making a cooking change in our city. He has a 10 – 15 menu items he does VERY well and that is critical. I’m sure once Kayla’s is growing he will try making new things and put them on the menu.

Great home cooking, friendly staff. Everything came out fresh and hot, very tasty. Fried catfish had excellent breading with just the right amount of spice. Get the new potatoes too! The Kayla’s Punch was homemade fruit punch. My boys loved it!

Our first visit to New Orleans was absolutely wonderful, and Kayla’s is part of the reason. We tried several Po-boys from several different locations during our time in NOLA, and all were decent. Kayla’s, however, set the bar to a new level. We ordered the fried fish and fried shrimp Po-boys. Each came with fries, was generously portioned, and arrived piping hot and fresh. The ingredients were crisp and tasty, with just enough mayo to accent it all. The Po-boys were simple, fresh, and excellently executed. The owner himself was kind and attentive. This will be our go-to for Po-boy sandwiches whenever we visit this amazing city.

Such a welcome addition to the neighborhood. Kayla’s food is super and there is nothing over 6 bucks on the menu! I went in for a shrimp poboy and met the owner Calvin Prescott. He is super friendly and dead set on serving the neighborhood great food at affordable prices. His friendly smile and attention to his customers is just a great as the dishes he serves up. The bread on the poboy wasn’t the usual overly chewy crap I seem to get at so many poboy joints but was flaky on the outside and soft on the inside. Perfect for soaking up all the hot sauce. The batter on the shrimp was nicely spiced and golden fried perfection. It also came with a side of thick cut fries! A super delicious fried shrimp poboy and fries for under 6 bucks! cant beat it! The owner also cooks up lunch specials, Jambalaya, Étouffée and tons of other delicious food. The only change I would make to Kayla’s is to have a larger sign on the building. Its tough to see and I think this place would be packed with better signage.

Despite my initial first impression, I really liked this place! A gentleman met us at the door, took our order cooked the food, brought it out, worked the register & escorted us out. The food: very small menu &EVERYTHING is $ 5.99, everything. Shrimp salad, po boys, fried shrimp plate, everything, $ 5.99. I got the fried shrimp plate; 10 shrimp, lightly breaded & fried perfectly, a green salad & sliced new potatoes than were pan-fried, like home fries.($ 5.99). The shrimp & potatoes were seasoned very well. Hubby got the grilled fish & gave it a 2thumbs up. Also, no dishes. Our food came in styrofoam boxes with plastic forks. So, if you can get past that & the bare bones dining room, the food is outstanding! I want to try the shrimp salad next time.

Went to Kaylas this morning and was very impressed! I live down the street and have been excited to check it out since they opened. The menu is super cheap($ 6 and I was full) but the food sets it apart from all the other places on St. Claude doing poboys and local cuisine. I love that it is totally non pretentious, classic new orleans style spot with great food and service. There’s a cool bar area in the front for when they get a liquor license and larger tables upstairs. We have needed more places like this in the neighborhood. I recommend the shrimp or fish poboys(both fried to perfection) which come with tasty seasoned french fries. My friend got the shrimp salad and was very pleased as well. I can’t wait to go back for the ribs and other specials. Definitely going back soon! Thanks Calvin!

I had the honor of eating at Kayla’s Restaurant, only open about 3 weeks now, last Saturday. The owner, Calvin Prescott had a super friendly smile and warmly welcomed us into his restaurant so that we could enjoy the deliciously breaded shrimp po boys, one of several po boys on the menu. The bread was excellent, not too chewy and grilled to perfection. There were plenty of shrimp to be had in each of our po boys and each one came with what looked like handcut fries. What a steal for $ 5.99! As a resident of Bywater who is sick of overpriced bourgeoisie restaurants popping up left and right, I am thrilled to see Kayla’s open in the neighborhood: an affordable, filling and excellently cooked meal all for less than six bucks! Thanks Mr. Calvin, we’ll be back! Here’s a link to a recent article in the Gambit on the restaurant:
