I could stare at this artwork for days. Really, really love it! I wish the young lady working had been friendly and had offered some information about the art and artist like the other galleries did. But she was busy reading something and we were the only people in this small gallery. I saw a piece at Café du monde and hunted down this gallery.

This is a nice little place packed with folk art. Upon walking in, at first I didn’t know what to think. The art here is definitely a little bit different to what I am used to seeing. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to talk to the gallery owner, so I’m not sure of the complete history of the pieces, however I really did enjoy them and think they were nice. The subject of the art is African Americans, mainly children and the art has a nice Southern feel to it. I would call the art here«simple, but quaint», if that makes any kind of sense. I do think that the pieces are interestingly done, and while it isn’t my taste, I can appreciate the work put into them by the artist.

Stumbled into this gallery on Royal Street and spent over an hour chatting with owner Carol who is simply the loveliest woman ever! It helped tremendously that she was sharing with the world the incredible gift that is Bill Hemmerling’s(and protégé Kallé) fantastic and heart wrenching work. I always struggle to find art of Black people, particularly of African-American women. Bill seems to connect to the soul of Black women, and tells powerful yet subtle stories of simple lives of these women(and men at times) on a variety of mediums. There’s even a painting on an old satellite dish that is so moving! I’m so happy spirit moved me in this place today. A must visit for sure. A new obsession has been born!

Very beautiful gallery located on one of my favorite streets in New Orleans. We love the Southern Theme and the African-American’s depicted in many of the pieces. The Curator Carol is very sweet & friendly and knows so much about all of the pieces. The colors are so vibrant and inviting & the prices are reasonable considering the artistry expressed.

I love the pieces in here, and the fact that the artist, Bill Hemmerling, wasn’t even a trained artist, makes his pieces that much more special. Talk to Carol Siekkinen in regards to Hemmerling’s background and about his pieces — you’d be amazed. He passed away a few years back, but his art is gorgeous. +Bill Hemmerling pieces: D

Lovely little gallery filled with Southern art. Happened across it while walking around the French Quarter looking for Preservation Hall. We sat down for a while and just enjoyed all of the nice paintings covering the walls. Most of them were a bit expensive for us(probably more because we’re cheapskates rather than because the art was overpriced or anything), so we ended up just picking up a couple of small prints.
