Everything was great. The first couple places we ate in NOLA were a little disappointing, then this place saved it. Good food, Nice atmosphere, good service and Delicious daiquiris.

A must visit if you’re in New Orleans. We came here dinner on NYE and were so delighted with our experience. They have so many options and my veg friends were also pleased with the options. We ordered the alligator sausage appetizer which came with a jam like sauce. Both were scrumptious! For the entrée I ordered the catfish and shrimp creole with garlic mashed potatoes. Ugh wishing we had eaten here for every meal.

Our server who I think was called Michael was very good but the food we felt was coming out of a production line kitchen. It wasn’t bad but it didn’t have soul and heart in its preparation. We sat outside under a heather and had an enjoyable time but it seemed to feel that the place just moved bums on seats and was a little bit too much on the tourist trail. Thus we left slightly disappointed… which seeing as we had been personally recommended the place was not good.

The gumbo was really spectacular here and so was the shrimp étouffée. Service was nice and attentive. The ambiance was laid back and casual. The restaurant is pretty cozy and a good spot for a date. The wine was ok but it’s worth coming here for the gumbo, which is really incredible. Had the gumbo sampler(three ways) and loved it.

I think I was expecting more from the Gumbo Shop. There was a long line, lots of people in the dining area, lots of Unilocal reviews. It was just okay for me though. Here’s why: I ordered the Seafood Okra Gumbo and my husband ordered the Creole Combination Platter with shrimp creole, jambalaya and red beans and rice. My gumbo wasn’t that great. I suppose I was expecting to be blown away since we were at the Gumbo Shop. However, I really felt that it was just okay. It tasted a little burnt I think. I could taste the okra(a lot!) but wasn’t really sensing any seafood flavor in it. I finished my cup portion and was glad I didn’t order the larger size. It wasn’t awful by any means, but it wasn’t enjoyable either. I think I should have ordered the chicken and sausage gumbo… My husband’s platter was a better choice. The red beans and rice were really good and flavorful. The jambalaya was also good but it was pretty standard, along with the shrimp creole. So, in the end, I’d say the red beans and rice were spot on! Service was quick for how many people they had dining that evening. Pricing is fair.

While this place already has a 1000+ reviews let me share my experience. We had a 45 minute wait before we got seated. the place was packed! but the hype lives us. Your food experience in NOLA is incomplete without checking this place out. The food is filled with flavor, the service is top notch for a busy restaurant. I ordered the 5 course meal so i could get a taste of everything. 1st course, bowl of seafood gumbo with okra. Warm, refreshing perfect for a chilly night. 2nd and 3rd course, etouffe and creamed spinach. The etouffe was amazing and the spinach rich in flavor. Ended with a bread pudding, what a perfect NOLA meal. One issue was the toilets, tiny only 2 for a restaurant housing atleast 50+ people No regrets, wait the wait and dine here!

Very disappointed in the food and service. The server was not informative regarding the off-the-menu options. We overheard other servers advising their tables regarding the daily specials, etc., but by this time we had already ordered. Based on reviews we read online decided that our choices would be fine. Initially the food came out incorrect and lukewarm. We had the seafood combo, shrimp étouffée nothing special, the bread pudding average and drinks ok. The location and ambience were nice, and the host and especially the busboy who by the way was more attentive and polite than the actual server, made up for some of the disappointment. Even though we tipped the server 20%, it was not based on the actually experience. Based on the overall experience I can only give this establishment a 2.5 out of 5.

While gumbo never looked appetizing to me, I knew my first time trying it had to be in NOLA. My boyfriend and I had just finished sharing a burger at Cochon and headed to the French Quarter to share the Creole Combination Platter. The intention was to order the platter and ask the waiter to substitute with crawfish étouffée. Unforunately the waiter misunderstood and served us two entrees instead of one. Can’t complain about more food though right? While I would recommend the platter, the crawfish étouffée stole my attention(aka stomach). The initial bite is banging with so much flavor that you’ll immediately want more. It was the perfect amount of seafood flavor without overloading on the sodium. Best to arrive here at an off time since it’s a smaller restaurant. Luckily we came here around 6:30PM on a Saturday night and only had to wait 15 minutes. Once we left the place, there was a line outside the entrance.

At gumbo shop we learned our dislike of either the restaurant itself or Creole food as a whole. Everything was lukewarm and had an extremely sludgey-consistencey, nothing seemed fresh. It was also a very impersonal place just waiting for you to hurry up so they could turn tables fast!

My mom and I went here on our trip to New Orleans this January, and we loved it. She had the jambalaya, and I had the shrimp creole, and both were delicious and authentic with generous portions. We sat out on their lovely heated patio, expecting to wait a while for our food as it was a pretty busy night… we waited maybe two minutes before our two steaming hot plates of food were set before us, a welcome surprise for two hungry travelers! Conveniently located, friendly servers, and great food!

We came here for lunch and we got there early, which was fortunate as when we left the line was out the door. My wife and I split the roast beef sandwich and a cup of the chicken andouille sausage gumbo. We had passed people on the way to our table eating that sandwich and there was really no need to look at the menu after that. The sandwich was delicious and the gravy was very rich. The gumbo on the other hand was just average, even though it is their signature dish. The server was nice, but hard to come by.

4.5 !! Definitely you must try it at least once! They don’t take reservation; only walk-ins. We waited in line for 30 – 35 mins but it is worth it. The place of very loud and crowded which make it toddler friendly :) service is friendly but very faaaast !! Food Crab cake — amazing! Very moist and rich. Love the flavors Gator sausage– is definitely delicious! I LOVED the side sauce. Highly recommended Seafood gumbo — ahhh this tastes like heaven. The combination of the spices, okra, shrimp, everything. It’s my fav dish in the restaurant! Crawfish étouffée — YUM !!! A very delicious spicy dish! Crawfish and shrimps taste very fresh.

We were walking around trying to decide on where to eat when we walked past gumbo shop. A friend had suggested it just that morning, so in we went. They have won«best gumbo» of New Orleans for past 26 years so two of our group ordered cups of that and someone else ordered a cup of turtle soup. We had seen how huge their po boys are when walking to table so six of us ordered three roast beef po boys to share. The daughter got a grilled cheese. The gumbo deserves its award. Filled with chicken and sausage and a thick base, it was very flavorful without being spicy. My fil said the turtle soup was also filled with meat and he would eat it every day. The po boys were piled with meat and a gravy and had a great taste. Good bread as well. The grilled cheese was fantastic. I took the crusts from my daughter and they were perfect golden brown, beautifully melted. I would seriously order that with a cup of the gumbo for myself next time

Wow, if all southern food tastes like the food at this place then oh MAN! So good! Not sure how authentic this place is since it is in the touristy French quarter, but wow it’s delicious. We found the restaurant through Unilocal, and it was also recommended to us from another friend. There’s no sign up sheet and you get seated as there is availability, meaning that if they have a table of 2 open and even though you’ve been waiting for 2 hours they will seat the first part of 2 that’s ready, even if they just got in line. We waited maybe 45 minutes to be seated for a party of 5. Our waiter made ordering super easy for us. He came in and basically said«y’all should try this this and that» and we said«ok!» Haha! We each got the combination plate with etouffe, creole, and jambalaya. Everything was sooooooo good!!! My friend also ordered a cup of gumbo and it was so yummy! Bread pudding was recommended but it was alright, entrees take the crown at this place. Get the combination plate to try a bit of everything!

I found this place thru Unilocal while visiting New Orleans. I wanted some authentic gumbo and I think I had it here hahah. I had gumbo and jambalaya. They had some sort of combo plate. I came here with my aunt and one of her coworkers as they were in town for a conference and I was in town for the free room and delicious southern food! We sat out on the patio they have. It’s honestly kind of a weird set up, but it was a nice night and we wanted to enjoy the outdoors. The employees were all very friendly and made sure to tell was were the best items on the menu. We left with our bellies happy. We’d be back again if we were in town.

This is the first time I have tasted gumbo so I cant say how it compares to other places. All I know is that I enjoyed my cup here. I ordered the shrimp and okra gumbo in a cup and this serving was just right for me. It was hearty and served with french bread on the side. The flavors and consistency of the stew just made me feel comforted. I also ended up ordering the combination plate which came with red beans, jambalaya, and shrimp etouffe. My favorite was the Jambalaya as it had the most flavor. The other sides were good too. The establishment itself can get quite crowded. We were seated in the courtyard and was just definitely a lovely time.

Gumbo, delicious every time. You’d really think in the French Quarter they’d get so much free traffic they’d phone it in, but they do not. Heads up, the jambalaya is dry — no sauce over it. If you wanted sauce you probably want to get the chicken jambalaya.

I must admit that I’m not an expert on gumbo by any means so I don’t have anything to compare this to, but I’m not sure after eating the gumbo I had at the Gumbo Shop, that I want to go any place else. Of course found this by looking at Unilocal and also a recommendation of a tour driver that we had. It’s on a side street right behind Jackson Square on the way to Royal street. It literally is a hole in the wall but we’ve found those to be some of the best. They don’t take reservations and there is a line, we somehow lucked out and walked right up and got seated. Immediately after that there was a line out the door. Service is quick and the line seemed to move pretty quickly. Our server, Brenda was a hoot and we left her an extra big tip. I had seafood gumbo and while I didn’t see lots of seafood, didn’t matter. Had a nice smoky taste and obviously whoever made the roux knew what they were doing. My husband had jambalaya which I tasted and it was good as well. had a nice little kick without burning your mouth. We did save room for dessert although I’m not sure how. One Unilocaler said the bread pudding was the best ever so I had that. It was good and you could taste the whiskey in the sauce but not the best ever, that was reserved for a serving I had in Kentucky. My husband had pecan pie and I normally don’t like that, but it was so good I almost cried. You also are served a nice crusty loaf of bread for dipping which is important so you don’t miss one drop of sauce. One Unilocaler said the bathrooms were dirty which I didn’t find. They are small, only two and since the building is old, so are they but they were clean and I didn’t have a problem using them.

Sooooo happy that in our walk down St. Peter St to Bourbon St from the Riverfront streetcar that we decided to pop in to this place! Authentic gumbo and jambalaya, gorgeous old architecture, charming open air patio in the center of the restaurant… just real cool, quintessential New Orleans dining experience. I loved that it wasn’t all the way into the French Quarter so it wasn’t too busy, but it was perfectly located on the way to Bourbon St as we walked alongside and just beyond Jackson Square. My coworker got the chicken and andouille gumbo and gobbled it all up. I got what I think was called the shrimp creole combination. It came with shrimp creole, jambalaya, and I substituted seafood étouffée for the red beans that were supposed to come with the meal for an extra charge. This was an AWESOME way to experience multiple authentic Creole dishes all at once. Just MAKESUREYOUSUBSTITUTETHESEAFOODÉTOUFFÉE!!! I’m basically shouting this out to you because it was probably my favorite thing on the plate, and it wasn’t even originally called for on the dish. If you get this dish, save a bit of the French bread they put on the table at the beginning of the meal and dip in your shrimp creole… that was super yummy. We had a TON of walking to do, so we couldn’t stomach dessert, but if I would have planned more strategically, I would have loved to have tried their bread pudding… it sounded awesome.
