Death to the empire waist maternity garment… I stopped here a couple days ago because I wanted to pick up something fun and casual to wear through the rest of my pregnancy. I can’t remember the lady’s name who helped me but she was amazing in helping me find things that suited my style. At nearly 8 months pregnant, the empire waist seems to be the go-to pattern for many designers, but here I found a great dress that I would absolutely wear if I weren’t pregnant. For some, the cost of the dress(just over $ 100) may be an issue, but for the quality and style of the garment was well worth the price.

First: I AMNOTPREGNANT. Full stop. Reviewing this store does not make me more pregnant than my current«not incubating a tiny succubus in my torso» status. Unilocal’s Golden Ticket scavenger hunt in December had me popping into all kinds of local businesses to scour the wares, hunt for a ticket, and find awesome new outlets for my local shopping needs. Were I pregnant, I’d be pampering myself with the fabulous togs at Baby Bump. In fact, their selection of maternity gear is the highlight of the store. Of course the price tags reflect the quality of both the sartorial statements and the materials, but that’s the way clothes go. Fashionable gestational parents who swing femme can find all sorts of fabulous things here. The staff was helpful, kind, and the opposite of pushy. In fact, all my questions were answered without anyone pushing me into any purchase or a single drop of guilt. But the rest of the store… well, it’s pricy. Think clothing for toddlers that clocks in at $ 58 per tiny shirt. The adult garments are the same prices! I was tempted by some of their baby and toddler clothes because I love putting siblings in matching outfits, but I could not justify spending $ 200 for two shirts and two pairs of tiny pants that will last roughly a month on those rapidly growing nephews I have. Obviously, the intended clientele for the«small human» section of the store is not me. I’m not sure who would spend that kind of money on casual clothing for a tiny human, either. But should you need to fan yourself a little bit then pay way too much money for a tiny shirt, yes, sure, go here. (If Baby Bump was JUST the maternity gear, it would be a 4 star store. But lordy, those children’s clothes? No no no.) Accessibility notes: stop up into shop. Door opens in. Stairs up into back of shop. Dressing room is up several steps. No Braille prices or signage. Items are hung high and low.

Really cool place for soon to be momistas to go to get their fashion fix. The clothes are modern but the prices are not outrageous. They give a 10% discount for locals. I love the location, not the parking. There is also currently a checkin offer on Unilocal. They are closed on Sundays but I just have to catch them on Saturdays or during week. I actually caught a great sale, which, hence spiked my review rating. Candles smell gooood and the baby clothes are tempting! The associates were really nice. Some even looked like a MTV reality show person! Hint!

I live in manhattan and I like to think that we have the best maternity stores… We have a few(Veronique and destination maternity) but BABYBUMP in New Orleans is my favorite of all. I found my dress for my shower there and several other cute comfy outfits. They have great tops and some that are also convenient for nursing. I must have gotten 4 dresses and 4 tops here. If you don’t find at least a few things here, I’m not sure where else you are planning to shop if you are preggers?! Oh, and If you are shopping for baby clothes, try pippen lane– also on magazine street!

A wise woman once told me that many, many things will change once you are pregnant, but your sense of style shouldn’t be one of them. After all, you are still yourself, and for many women, the emotional upheaval due to hormones and sudden increase in weight can make you feel weird and frumpy. Baby Bump carries clothing I actually WANT to wear that makes me feel radiant, lovely, and fashionable. Many of these items are admittedly pricier than your standard maternity clothes, BUT are cleverly made in a way where you can wear them long after you are no longer pregnant. For example, two dresses I have bought there(one by Jules & Jim, the other by VaVa/Joy Han) are made from stretchy material that expands to fit my growing belly but contracts once I’m back to my normal weight without relying on cuts that make a thin woman«look» pregnant. The customer service there is sublime. They post photos of new items on their Facebook page and allow you to call them and purchase items for pickup later or even mail order. The staff is great about picking out items to recommend that match your personal tastes and will look great on you. They have offered to stay open later for me if I want to run by and pick up something after work. They actually get excited about helping you find that perfect outfit and are extremely helpful without ever seeming fake or pushy. I’m glad they sell clothing for children because I will miss shopping there after my son is born!
