The only reason I’d come here is because it’s near my workplace and I love coming here for soup. They have a buffet of Chinese food ranging from authenthic to americanized Chinese food. They basically have what you’d find at a typical dine in buffet. Their food here is pretty greasy but tasty at the same time. It’s about 7 bucks a pound but after 1:35PM, it’s about 5 bucks a pound. I love their hot and sour soup and their chicken and corn soup here. The pint size is only $ 1.75. The prices here for food sure beats everything around being that it’s located in the financial district. They also have a regular dine in /takeout section upstairs where they have daily special specials where you can choose 2 dishes to go with your rice. Right next to it is Vivi’s if you want some Bubble tea.

Adding a star because the main ordering area appears to be newer/cleaner, credit cards are accepted and a variety of «authentic» cantonese style noodles soup are part of the menu…

Yip’s has returned and if you like cheap lukewarm Chinese style food Yip’s is just the place. Add in a rude cashier or two and you will be in heaven. Yip’s was closed for a while because it’s lease expired, to bad it didn’t stay closed. Will not be returning here, me sooo sorry…

I love Chinese food and when I saw this restaurant I knew I had to try it. The cashiers spoke Chinese and the food looked authentic. I ordered wonton ho fun. I have no complaints about the ho fun, but the wonton were nasty. They were undercooked and the wonton wrapping hasn’t even softened yet. For the price, I did get a big plate. But I couldn’t even finish it because just after two bites, my stomach felt sick from all the unnecessary grease. I cant handle grease.

For price conscious consumer this place serves its purpose. I went there at 11:30 am and found a lot of variety. There was a lot of vegetables and meet to choose. While the food wasn’t amazing it was good for a place where you want to save a little bit of money.

Yip’s is firmly in the middle of the road when it comes to Americanized Chinese. Everything I’ve gotten here is full of MSG and tastes average, with the exception of their veggie lo mein. It’s terrible. So bad. Comically, I keep getting it and having my soul crushed. It’s always soggy. There’s a buffet-by-the-pound downstairs, and then a counter upstairs with seating and you can order a la carte. They now take credit cards, and I think there’s a reasonable $ 8 minimum on that. Staff are friendly and somehow remember me when I lunch here. 2.5 stars.

Good tasting food and very quick service. Surprised a restaurant in this area would be so affordable. The upstairs section is superior to the downstairs buffet section because of fresher food.

You simply can’t beat the price for the area. Go after 145pm and the buffet is all of a sudden 499/lb. The food, as others have noted is ho-hum, but as the old saying goes, you get what you pay for. Considering it’s a low rent dingy spot, I find the food pretty satisfying. Also if you’re looking for a bigger meal you do better going upstairs and getting one of the Six dollar combos they have. I don’t know why people say it’s poorly lot upstairs. I have eaten up there several times and had plenty of light and room to eat. However it is noisy and the two line thing is really inexplicable. It is never clear which line you should be in and there doesn’t seem to be any logic to it.

I do not recommend eating inside(it’s dark and dirty and hot and humid and quiet), but if you know of a place to sit indoors or outdoors nearby, I suppose you could be relatively satisfied, but only if you’re OK with old-fashioned sugary-salty greasy-soggy Chinese-American, since it IS really cheap.

I visit the downstairs lunch buffet regularly. The vegetables(especially string beans) are delicious, with just the right amount of crunch. Some of the noodles are very good too, without being drowned in sauces. They have a huge selection, but I steer clear of the salty/sugary sauces, sushi and dumplings.(No one does everything well.) The price is right, with a discount(and no line) after 1:45pm and free soda for purchases over $ 6. The checkout process is very efficient; one woman weighs your food and bags it while another takes your money. It’s a great no-frills lunch spot.

Recently found out about their thursday’s special, where you can get a good portion of curry chicken with brocolli and rice for $ 5.50. Excellent choice and good quality of food for such an affordable price. This is definitely my Thursday lunch special going forward.

Come here if you want to eat a lot of meat for cheap. Even though the per pound rate is lower than most($ 6 vs $ 10), it comes out to about the same price for me for two reasons: rice and watermelon. If you eat rice, like most Chinese people do, then the rice will be very expensive. If you don’t eat rice, then your meal will be relatively cheap. There’s a large selection of meats and veggies. Remember that: too much food very quickly = food coma.

I can go for the spicy garlic shrimp or spare ribs at any time. The buffet downstairs is okay. Unlike Ho Yips a couple of blocks away after 2 p.m. there is usually no food at the buffet and they don’t seem even care that everything is gone. I do like that if you purchase from the buffet you get a free soda or water. I recommend that they remain consistent with the flavor because sometimes the food can be either really greasy or bland.

eat or skip? SKIP! ordered: *chow mein, kung pao chicken and pepper steak for 6.50. huge portion. flavor wise not tasty at all. I definitely had better tasting chinese fast food. wouldn’t really recommend it personally. that’s probably because i’m a foodie and my taste buds are different from other folks. but to be honest when i came in here i was probably the only asian person in the building besides the staff. tips: *indoor seating *there’s also upstair seating. *can get packed during lunch time. *there’s two lines. *doesn’t give a receipt so if you want one you have to ask. *accepts cash and credit *staff speaks fair english.

Good chroma fast take out Chinese. This is is really 2 restaurants. A downstairs which is a buffer where you by by weight and the upstairs which has a la carte dishes. The place is popular and can seem crowded but the line moves fast. The food is good if you are in the mood for takeout.

Yips is a quick, easy, cheap way to get food. Its like a speeded buffet. You pay by the amount of food you take. For four bucks you can walk out with quite a lot of food and different types. Everything is usually fatty, but they do sell some steamed veggies, and the veggies can be either separated or mixed. They accept cash and credit card. It’s mostly convenient when you are in a hurry and are on the go. I walk in and out with food quickly when I go to YIPS. I know a lot of people that go to this place and like it. It is Chinese food so if you don’t like Chinese food, do not go to YIPS. The place itself, has a strong Chinese food smell. I personally like YIPS because as I mentioned before, it is decent in price it’s quick and convenient. The staff never talk to you 1-on-1 but that is exactly what people want when they are in a hurry! Enjoy.

They also have squid salad down stairs. On a budget best bet. Just added bubble tea outside in front. Good for the buck!!!

This joint is my dirty little secret. I don’t want people knowing that I grab my greasy lunches from the buffet, nor do I want people to know that the price per lb is discounted after 1:45pm. That being said… a container of soup is only $ 1.75. What a steal, when you consider that my salads cost an average of $ 10 and my soups cost an average of $ 7 down in FIDI. As for the lunch buffet, the offerings are traditionally Chinese, ranging from lo mein noodles to shu mei to bok choy stirfry. If you get over a lb worth of food, you get a free soda(no cokes, just pepsi).

Plain and simple, greasy, but somewhat delicioussssss Chinese food! I’ve been here a few times now to get take out and simply put, this is some of the greassiest“bootleg” Chinese food I have ever eaten! It’s comparable to Ho Yips located in the financial district on Liberty Street, with a few differences. I consider Ho Yips the best«bootleg”/ «Americanized Chinese food restaurant I’ve ever been to. The first huge difference is the amount of starch, sauce and grease in Yips’ platters. I’ve ordered both the Chicken with Chinese Mushroom and Chicken with Black Bean Sauce from the front and both contained a large amount of sauce that I did not see from Ho Yips. Ho Yips daily specials were saucy, but it was mostly contained within the ingredients of the special. Yips’ daily specials had sauce seeping into the white rice and making it down to the bottom of the container. All of the rice that was in my platter was drowned in sauce. Honestly I prefer it like that, but I know some people don’t like their rice moistened. A few smaller differences were that their containers were not plastic, but tin foil instead. Small gripe in that I prefer the plastic tupperwares just so that nothing spills. Finally, Yips’ is actually still holding at $ 5 for a majority of their daily specials with white rice($ 5.25 with pork fried rice), while Ho Yips has raised their prices a bit every few months to now $ 5.60 for most of their daily specials. Like Ho Yips, Yips’ serves Chinatown style dishes, such as roast pork rices. The restaurant is not as attractive as Ho Yips either, although Ho Yips is not going to win any décor awards, but Yips is slightly«dingier». One more comment I will make is that if you would like to get food by weight, then you have to go downstairs instead as the upstairs and downstairs are separated. Since I don’t work too far from here, this will ultimately be my choice of Chinese food in the area and it’s not a bad substitute!

I’m a big fan of Ho Yips, but with a change in jobs, I’m closer to this Yip’s location. I came to the first floor with the prepared over rice dishes and got a kung pao chicken. It was good, but not notable. I was actually hoping for more peppers or celery, but you can’t complain when I got a lot of good white meat chicken. The rice to meat ratio is good and the meal is cheap and filling. I might have to try to basement buffet next time, but I’m not really rushing to go back. The value is great at least and the place is open in spite of the Sandy rebuilding. Seating is ample, but the place could use a facelift. Definitely a greasy spoon kind of place.
