If you think that the rice in a halal cart’s plate is just filler, then go ahead and downgrade my review to 3 stars. The Famous Halal Guys at 53rd and 6th make a more well-balanced meal with that magical white sauce, and Kwik Meal’s real-deal lamb meat is a killer feature. But XPL is my favorite street meat in the city for the reason that MidtownLunch praised the original cart: heavily seasoned, aromatic basmati rice, always at precisely the right temperature for scarfing down a mightily unhealthy meal for all of $ 5. It’s truly rare for me to praise any rice that isn’t polished white in the Japanese/Korean tradition, but this stuff is perfect for street meat. It’s hard to work out whether any particular location is affiliated with the original XPL, but the consensus view is that nothing taste-wise is different between the various locations. I definitely agree, as I have the chicken-and-lamb combo from several of the Midtown locations regularly and can’t detect any difference. The guy who mans this one is particularly nice, however, Probability of return within 1 year: 100%
