Weligus + Sons is very serious shop. They take everything they do personally and always make a perfect key. This is not your run of the mill locksmith slash bodega. I’m guessing this is a very old family business.

I just had the worst experience at this store. Considering the economy we are in, that all the mom and pop store are struggling… this store doesn’t care about their customers. Their Customer service is not existent.

I went in to replace a mortise lock. First he accuses of buying cheap shit. I’ve never met the guy nor bought a lock but one look at the lock I brought in he is ranting at me. The lock came with the apartment, so I certainly wasn’t the one who bought it. Then he refuses to show me more expensive items because he didn’t think I could afford it. He continue to insult me and treat me like an idiot. I finally had to assure him I’m not there to cheat him before he stopped insulting me. At first I thought it was one employee until a Chinese woman came in to get a couple of keys cut. The a completely different employee growled at her. Then I realized that it’s just standard operating procedure to be mean to customers.

I hate when I remind myself to do something and then completely forget. Well, that’s what happened here. I needed to make a key for my delivery service and of course, I forgot when I was near my usual keymaker. So I duck into a different spot that happened to be on my way home. And, wouldn’t you know it, their key machine was broken! It’s no wonder too, since it was a cramped, itty-bitty corner in an even tinier hardware shop in Chinatown. I left that shop frustrated and muttering under my breath like a crazy person when I noticed this shop out of the corner of my eye. It was as if the shop had appeared out of nowhere. Seriously, I had never even noticed it before and I’ve walked down this block a million times. I walked inside and what a difference from the previous shop I was in! The other shop was minuscule and my standing at the keymaking counter/register blocked up the entire aisle/entrance/exit. At Weilgus & Sons, there was plenty of room. I could’ve stood at their counter with my arms outstretched, spinning round and round and wouldn’t have touched anything. It’s a brightly lit space and the guys behind the counter were very friendly. I asked to have one key made and they were done in less time than it had taken me to remove the key from my keyring. To top it all off, it was dirt cheap! I mean, even cheaper than my usual place! In all seriousness, I had thought that it would be expensive because of how nice their shop was. My guess on the low pricing would be because these guys specialize in locks, locksmithing supplies and all sorts of hardware for doors. So making keys must be a given for them, hence the great price on the keymaking. If you should ever need a cylinder changed, I’d come here to take a look around. On top of that, the guys behind the counter were so nice that I forgot how frustrated with myself I was. That and the unexpected low pricing had me leaving the shop in a great mood. And, although I don’t need keys made often, these guys are always going to be my first stop!
