One of my favorite things about NYC, especially during the summer & holiday times, are the markets. Jewelry, home accessories, knit goods, hot apple cider, hand made chocolates, candles, etc. The Urban Space in the Meatbacking district is no exception, and dare I say it might just be the best market in the city, for the following reasons: + awesome location [west village /next door to the standard hotel /underneath the highline.] + about 20 food stands [soft serve fruit /wafels & dinges /arancini bros just to name a few] + a dozen or so picnic tables to sit and enjoy any– of the food stuffs listed above + over 30 [clothing /jewelry /misc] shops. + giant chalk board wall for getting your creative on. + partially covered yard [so you can hang even in the rain] Definitely worth the visit next time you find yourself wandering the West Side.

I’ve been to a number of the urban space markets and this is definitely my favorite. It’s right under the highline which is great to walk along after you’ve stuffed your face from all of the yummy treats they have here. They also have a lot of shops that have creative/artistic gifts. I love getting my girlfriends jewelry from these shops! Maybe I just got lucky the couple of times I’ve been to this market but it wasn’t very crowded the markets at union and columbus. You can also draw/write on their chalkboard wall which I thought was pretty neat. Check it out!

I saw this gem while walking to the Standard Hotel, and had to stop by after walking by aisles and aisles of shops and engulfed by the aromas of food. I loved that it’s tucked under the Highline and offers so many unique vendors and culinary delights; which I unfortunately did not get to try. But since I was visiting from CA, I did pick up a couple gifts for myself. A little bit on the pricier side, but you are supporting local artists! Stop by the chalkboard wall and leave a message! And see a couple of my snapshots here:

Really nice little indie stands selling goodies, clothing, jewelry, you name it. In the back there’s lots of nice food stands as well! I am obviously partial to my vegan Soft Serve Fruit. I think there’s also vegan ice cream(coconut crème) at Steve’s Ice Cream but I was in my lighter cold treat mood. Right under the High Line, so it’s a good place to stop before heading up. Some vendors take credit and others don’t, so keep that in mind.

Open air market under the Highline, hosting over 60 Indie artisans and Foodie Shops. 7 days a week from 11am — 8pm during the weekday, 9pm/10pm on the weekends from Labor Day to October 28th with a brief hiatus and reopening early November until December 24th, 2012. Excellent place to find a creative gift or original piece or three of jewelry to adorn yourself. Took effort to tear myself away from all the shiny, pretties at Kira Kira and grab a double cone of coconut non dairy at Steve’s Ice Cream. With dessert done first, next were main course selections from Arancini Brothers, La Sonrisa and Red Hook Lobster Pound. These are some Serious Eats here. Took our goodies up to the park to people watch and see the Sunrise.
