So a friend of a friend invited me to this«underground supper club.» … Guess they’re not going to be so «undergound» once I Unilocal about them… Anyways, its these three guy-chefs that cook for you in their open kitchen/apartment. So you see them cooking and then they produce this 8+ course tasting menu… which for a «suggested donation» of 30 bucks is the best deal in Manhattan… Also, I ended up not knowing any one there. But you bond over good food… and wine… and its like eating at a very exclusive communal table. So the food… — First up was an amuse bouche: ‘Tom Yum Tuille’ — basically a cracker cup that tastes like a super intense version of the Thai soup and filled with bright Asian pickles. — Next were braised and seared octopus tentacles, tender and perfectly cooked. — Coconut Curry Tart, like a slice of creamy coconut curry quiche with carrot purée, mint chutney, pomegranate sauce toasted coconut and fried okra. The plate was artistically composed and looked amazing. — Next: ratatouille with goat cheese — A refreshing palate cleanser of lemongrass granite. — A ‘black pasta in black and white sauces’, handmade pasta in a paradoxically light and rich mushroom cream sauce and a black(fermented) garlic and black olive sauce, with almonds, sun-dried tomatoes and fried sage leaves. Serious deliciousness. –Then cod in a white wine and butter sauce on green beans. I wasn’t totally crazy about this one: You can call them haricot verts, but they still remind me of my grandmother… — The dessert was amazingly gorgeous, a blood orange curd cylinder coated in chocolate ‘soil’ with a candied blood orange slice, chocolate sponge cake and handmade coffee ice cream. For all that it actually wasn’t heavy at all, the courses are super small, and the whole thing is more about«experience» then getting super full. After dessert, there was an assortment of little tartlets and petit fours at the end and tea and coffee. So there you are, the not so underground super club has its first Unilocal review… check it out!
