If you’re a nonprofit(tiny, small, medium or large) you have to know about this gem. They have a number of valuable FREE workshops that help you with fundraising, networking and anything having to do with nonprofits. Their most valuable resource is the online foundation database, which is free if you visit them in their library, conveniently located on 5th ave and 16th/17th streets. You can printout your searches(I think it’s 0.10/page) or just copy and paste into your email like I did :) The library also has evening(Wednesday till 8pm?) and Saturday hours in addition to the typical 9 to 5pm. Go there!

While working on a grant proposal, I was told about the Foundation Center in the city. Now they have a few of these gems around the country, and they come in handy when researching possible sources of funding for a grant. The computers, while old, are so much better than going through tedious and boring books on companies that fund grants. Unless of course you like reading the yellow pages in your spare time. The lady at the front desk, who is there to help and answer any questions, was so nice and helpful. I wanted a certain computer station, she explained it was not working properly, and brought me over to one that was working. Explained how to use it and was walking around answering peoples questions. This computer is installed with software that has all the companies, big or small, that have given money to grants. You can search by geographical location or by the kind of funding you need. I am working on getting students in a poor school some curriculum materials that will assist the ESL students. I found a few sources and now can go forth and contact them directly. Definitely will be back here… it is located right on 5th avenue, with plenty of shopping and eating right outside.
