I am Japanese, the food was pretty bad, I got bones in my oniguiri(made from salmon), I ordered an okonomi Yaki(that is original from Hiroshima, my hometown) and was the weirdest thing that I ever have, not even close to the original.

One of my favorite places for cheap but great Japanese food. I love their tempura udon! Their curry is good too. There is a deli part to this place where one can buy Japanese food and other products too. So it’s a win win place.

I make a 1.5 mile roundtrip hike in the frigid cold just to have lunch here at least twice a week. Need I say more? Hot udon, tempura, chicken/pork katsu don, rice triangles, a bakery, a supermarket, all in one place. And they have a cosy seating area upstairs with a microwave for heating up their cold dishes! I would share a picture, but I was too busy stuffing face. Oh well, maybe tomorrow.

This small grocery is on the same street as the popular Café Zaiya. There is a little of everything — a make-to-order ramen bar, a prêt-à-manger shelf, a lot of Japanese cans, boxes, fresh meat and vegetables. One minus: THEYDON’T HAVEANYDAIRYPRODUCTS. No chicken eggs. No cow milk. No butter. One plus: Vegetables are soooo clean and fresh. They are cut and trimmed nicely. The veggie I bought stayed fresh in my fridge for up to a month.

I finally found my yakisoba pan! I usually only come here for Sunrise Mart, and not the food, but today, my friend wanted a sandwich; there were no seats left at Café Zaiya, so I suggested walking a few doors down over here. While we were looking for sandwiches, I found yakisoba pan! I wonder why Panya doesn’t have it, but the one in Sunrise Mart does… We were here around 4:30, and it was nearly empty upstairs, which was great! However, the yakisoba pan didn’t quite meet my expectations. Sunrise Mart, as in the mart itself, is actually really tiny. They’re usually restocking, so it feels like you’re always in someone’s way. And you probably are, because there are way too many people shopping, and very small aisles. Although some items feel expensive, there are things here that you CAN’T find elsewhere(Gari Gari kun!). I come every once in a while to see if they have new candy in stock. But before you visit Sunrise Mart, I would definitely check out Chinese supermarkets first. Things are usually much cheaper there, especially the really common snacks. Oh, if anyone is trying to decide between DARS chocolate and the meiji chocolate bars, go for DARS! It’s more expensive, but in my opinion, meiji doesn’t really have much taste.

I eat a ton of Japanese, it is my main cuisine that’s economical and healthy for the most part. I find myself in all 3 Sunrise Mart locations at least 3 to 4 times per week. I’m mainly veggie eating and will have the occasional fish so this place suits my dietary restriction just fine. I usually make a beeline for the grocery store in the back, but for some reason this past week, I needed some comfort food to lift my soul to a different stratosphere. The front part of this location is a bakery and also has a kitchen for quick made dishes. They have so much on offer here that my mind was swimming with all the choices! I then spotted that they had ramen and decided on a mainly miso ramen soup bowl($ 8), and although not all vegetarian, but the kind woman taking orders informed the soup was cooked in fish broth, which suited me just fine. They also have a million choices of udon, okonomiyaki, onigiri, ramen, etc. Miso ramen soup was very decent and hit the spot nicely. But as with all ramen soups, definitely salty, but not saltier than usual. Just make sure to drink tons of water afterwards. They have seating here either in the front looking out to the street or upstairs. I like that they have a diverse staff here and not just Japanese for hire here, so that was nice. I will definitely back soon, I don’t always eat their fresh prepared food, but may need to start doing that more! Thanks Sunrise Mart for always feeding me and being a reliable eating place for me all around the city.

Rude employees!!! Doors wide open but 2 employees scream at me for walking in while they’re still closed. I’m Not a psychic. Just be polite and say nicely that you aren’t open, Eventhough your store is lit up and there are like 10 people inside… and the doors are open and its 7:55 am in midtown Manhattan and you serve breakfast… There are so many awesome places in this area, I will not waste time In a place with rude nasty employees… Plus the last time I was at this place for lunch, I found two bones in my salmon … Not recommended

Cheap Japanese restaurant. Cheaper than Café Zaiya by a buck or two. For example, the bowls, onigiris and bento boxes are all a little less. But it also comes at a cost(pun-intended). The quality is definitely not as good as Café Zaiya. My friend says the meat they have in the bowls aren’t real meat.(i can’t vouch since I haven’t tried). The best thing about it is probably the market they have in the back. Great place to find asian snacks.

Nice grocery chain in NYC. Great for picking up quick snacks that I miss from Japan. Has an assortment of cold teas and canned coffee as well as Onigiri. They also serve prepared meals and bentos, but I have not tried any yet.

We arrived shortly after 11am. The hot food station opens at 11am. The bento boxes and drinks are to your left as you walk in — a number of the bentos were Korean dishes(e.g., bulgogi, bibimbob), but the vast majority, of course, is Japanese. I grabbed the fried chicken bento today. I’m really not into fried food but it looked like the best one on the stand today. It was very good for $ 8, but it wouldn’t be my first choice for lunch. The bento itself was very good and filling — the curry rice had bits of turkey in it(I thought it was spam at first but Tina C. informed me that it is, in fact, turkey bits). The croquette was awesome — I added some Sriracha when I got to the office, which took it up a notch of awesomeness. The fried chicken itself wasn’t that impressive. was a bit stale but decent. The presentation of these bentos are above average. I hate that the credit card limit is $ 10 minimum — forces me to grab drinks I don’t even need/want! There’s about 4 – 5 chefs taking hot food orders, and you can make your way up the narrow stairs to the dining area directly above the back mini-mart. The bento boxes lined up in front of the hot food station looked pretty good — none of them were cold, which meant that it hasn’t been out for that long(awesome!) The bakery pastries looked good — would’ve been sold if I saw anything shaped like Hello Kitty — would I risk my gluten allergy for it? Perhaps. The walkway is VERY narrow, so be careful — you always have to be aware of your surroundings, as should you need to bend, you’re going to hold up traffic, guaranteed. The mini mart is interesting but I live near a Mitsuwa, so I’ll never be buying anything from this little store, but it sure is good to know that if I need some soy sauce, I know where to go nearby my office.

Great lunch spot for some pork katsu or some udon. Love that they over brown rice at no extra charge. They have plenty of other options including a supermarket at the back of the store. Food here was pretty solid and great value at $ 7 for a brown rice pork katsu. I will be back. They have a $ 10 minimum for credit card.

Tucked away in midtown, this Japanese market is a gem. The front serves as a food court type with a bakery and a rice and noodle stand. In the back you can find all sorts of Japanese food and household items. Upstairs there’s seating along with a microwave if you need to heat up food but I don’t recommend the microwave. it’s very old and disgusting looking. I been here a couple times and had ordered chicken katsu don .it’s absolutely amazing in terms of taste profile. I’m no 5 star food critic but I just eat whatever tastes good to taste bud. Their market stuff is considered relatively cheap in midtown. Staff are very friendly and would go out of their way to help you.

I question some of the ways Sunrise is dealing with increased popularity. When I worked around the corner three years ago(I remember when Sunrise opened; it was a glorious time), Sunrise would make most of its lunch meals to order from the grill. My favorite was the spiced pork, but also I sometimes with a good old fashioned oyako don(chicken with egg served over rice). You ordered at the counter, went over and paid and waited for the order to appear. It came warm and packaged, a perfect portion for lunch. Out of the four Japanese restaurants on the block(now down to three) this was my favorite. I have a new client in the area so stopped in here after a meeting that ended at around 12:30 p.m. I went with the chicken katsu, which was presented pre-cooked in front of the grill. I took it to counter, paid and went upstairs. In my relative older age, I now I have time to no longer be regulated to takeout. The quality of the ingredients were still good, but things suffered by being prepared in advance. The crunch of the chicken was missing, there was a sogginess setting in that I didn’t even use to have after I walked back to the office. Look I understand cooking hundreds of meals to order is complicated, and even causes some delays as people wait to pick up their lunch. But please, please, Sunrise stop sacrificing quality in the name of efficiency!

Since there are two parts to this establishment, I will rate this separately. I love that there’s a Japanese grocery store in the heart of Manhattan, but there isn’t much of a selection. They do however have enough to keep you fascinated and coming back! In terms of the food… I had an assorted bento box($ 10.95) with two pieces of cooked salmon, one slice of pork belly, one tofu, some eggplants, and 4 bite size chunks of ribs. It was way too salty! My whole meal was basically brown. The best part of this experience was their sparking peach soda($ 1.99) It’s a must get!

Haven’t been here for 2.3 years and I am so sick of eating deli food across from my building. Its a sunny day so I decided to walk over to Sunrise for lunch. I really wanted a pork katsu over rice but majority Salmon bento boxes were stacked up high. I relooked at the bento boxes and ended up with Chicken Barbeque. I asked the cashier how much should I heat it up and she replied a min 30 mins. It will be helpful if they can less what’s in the bento box. I came back into the office and heated up my bento box. The chicken doesn’t have any trace of bbq sauce but it looks more like sesame chicken. It was quite fulfilling as I am still eating this big portion size bento.

サンライズマートが好きです。〜5/5いいね! 5⁄5 Customer Service 5⁄5 Food 5⁄5 Environment Today, on this nice spring-like day, I found Sunrise Mart. I walked in and asked for dango. A customer was very nice and she helped me find it! There is a variety of dangos, daifuku, Japanese snacks, baked goods, and food/drinks in general. The workers are friendly and helpful! It was a nice and comfortable environment to be in.~ I brought several dango flavors and daifuku. They are very fresh and refrigerated! I’m not sure if this is the smallest location, because they seemed to have less stuff then the others(from what I saw in the pictures). Still! 5⁄5 recommend! I plan to come back and purchase more!

Such a cute little place! I love Japanese food. And I love that I can stop by here for some ingredients or for take away! There’s a little dining area upstairs if you prefer. The aromas are amazing. Made me hungry and I couldn’t decide what I wanted. I wanted it all! Try their rice bun burgers. It’s similar to the famous mos burger. It’s hot so be careful not to burn your tongue! Another favorite? Onigiri! One of my favorite childhood snacks! I could probably eat this all day. Haha!

This is my next favorite Japanese grocery store when dainobu is too far. They sell meats, snacks, cosmetic products. What I like about sunrise is that they have a good variety selection of hot foods pre-made and also for order. You can get Japanese pancake, takiyaki, ramen, udon, gyu don, tempura, etc. the front area also sells bakery items and sushi. If you’re looking for just sashimi, I recommend going to the back towards the grocery store and you’ll find the salmon sashimi fillets, tuna, salmon roe and sea urchin. Seating upstairs.
