This restaurant was so small since I went there on November of 2009 with my friend. She wanted to go there because of her favorite artist, Chris Brown, who went to Soul Fixins for lunch or dinner. The food that I like the best was their chicken and that delicious corn bread. I didn’t go to this place anymore, but I heard it renovated.

This place is the best soul food you can get south of 116th street. The macaroni and cheese is my favorite side — but you can’t go wrong with anything here!

I love this place. The food was very tasty and well seasoned. I’m a bit disappointed that they changed locations. They used to be located on 34th near 9th ave.

This place is so unreliable. You never know when they are open. They open and close at such odd hours. The people who work there seem so disorganized and frazzled. The first time I went to this«so called» restaurant a few months ago to order some food to take out, the gate was open and the person who I believe worked there was inside. It was around 2pm on a Saturday afternoon. He said that they weren’t open and to try back in a few hours. Who does that? So I decided to come back another day. I finally came back and the place was kind of empty and the workers looked like they were trying to hang some type of beam up on the ceiling. I ignored them and just went straight to the area where I can order some food. I ordered some chicken, mac and cheese, yams and potato salad. The only thing decent was the chicken. Everything else lacked flavor. Maybe this place is going out of business, which they really should. As I am a glutton for punishment, I tried calling them another day just to see if they were open and to just grab some chicken which as I mentioned was the only flavorful thing that I’ve tried. I get their voice mail even though it says they are open on Unilocal.I tried to call another day and it just rings and rings. Is this place out of business? Maybe it is. The last review seems like it was around December 2014. I’m going to give up trying to give this place another shot. Horrible way to do business IF they are still in business.

I know they’ve made plenty of changes recently, but why this has less than four stars blows my mind. This place has a cool, laid back interior, never too crowded, where you can lay back and order your food, or just avoid a takeout line at lunchtime. The jerk chicken is super succulent and their cornbread — if it doesn’t hit you the first time — it will have you hooked by the 2nd. Prices are really good for the area, and I kept mine as low as $ 8 by ordering«just two jerk chicken», for which they throw in a cornbread for free anyway. Yes, they accommodate orders like that. Oxtail was great, too, even if the rice n peas were on the salty side. People behind the counter are super friendly, and the variety is excellent.

Maybe it’s new and needs some time to improve, but the fried chicken was ok, I wouldn’t buy it again. The mac and cheese was again, ok. The service was disappointing. And the menu felt rigid where I didn’t feel I could ask for a second portion of the main food without also purchasing two more sides. Lots of improvement needed, but I’m sure they will get there. Also the décor felt like it was trying too hard. There were hanging chiffon sheets from the ceiling it was dark inside. I hope they improve.

About as real a country meal as you’re gonna get near midtown. Only a stones throw from MSG. This place rocked it on the meatloaf. Thick slab of slightly BBQ and savory basted beef. Wedged up smugly next to a pile of REAL. Buttery mashed and a side of greens. Greens were soaked in a peppery, vinegar sauce plain and simple the way I like it. And oh, the Mac and cheese? Just the right collision of macs, breadcrumb and cheese to stick the fork without stabbing it. Mmmm, mm. Not any other way to describe the whole package here except. Picture eating over a friends house and everybody’s talking and eating and enjoying. Totally laid back and delicious. Definitely a cool weather favorite fo sho

Starved on a late lunch break, I sought a little comfort without entirely making my stomach angry. I walked by Soul Fixins, passed it up, and then immediately regretted it. The shop is very takeout friendly — not a place you’d want to sit and soak in any ambiance. The food counter is well run. I got barbecue chicken(white meat) plus the candies yams and mac’n’cheese with a piece of cornbread. No regrets. At the time, that cornbread made my day; the next evening I went to a southern place in Venice, CA that knocked my socks off in the cornbread department though, so I gather that my hunger probably informed my original appraisal of the food. The yams were tasty. The chicken was hearty. Basically, everything was good and VERY generous portions — no extra space in my to-go container. That’s worth a return trip to me.

Food and friendliness of this spot are amazing. So much food — come hungry! Ask for a side of one of the other entrees! Will go back and def order in from this join for years to come! Why 4 out of 5? The plates and utensils just don’t cut it – literally — they are way to flimsy for such hearty food!

They were so friendly. The catfish was perfect. Not too greasy. They fry everything fresh and I had a half tea half lemonade: perfection. Ambience is warm and intimate with Coltrane playing softly in the background. Lemme add, a friendly chat with the owner might get you a free slice of cake… or two.

First let me say if anyone thinks the food there is «yummy» you must eat everything from a can. Bought the Groupon even thought the reviews weren’t that great. This place is Horrible. The entrees consist of one piece of meat. like literally I was given a drum and by bf was given a breast(which didn’t taste that bad). The sides were disgusting the mashed potatoes were powdered, the rice was raw yet the beans were burnt. The homemade ice tea was powdered n clearly no one knew how to at least mix it properly. NOTHINGINTHISPLACEIS «HOMEMADE» or «COMFORTFOOD». Please don’t waste your money here.

Tried this restaurant once because I had a groupon for it and the food tasted a little better than it looked. But over all I was not impressed when I compared the food to other soul food restaurants that Ive tried. Also, I didnt recall seeing a grade in the window regarding how sanitary the place is but just looking around made me cringe and I was hesitant to try the food. The restaurant itself is very tiny and not very comfortable for a sit down dinner. Not sure if I would return especially, after being charged $ 4.00 for tax in addition to the $ 17.00 purchase price of the groupon. Can u say robbery!

Dont do it, just dont do it. this place is bootleg(one of my fav words, been waiting for the right restaurant to use it)! i read all the Unilocal reviews before going and was very hesitant, but a dear friend bought a groupon for us to go(sweet thought — i am from the south). but dear lord, this place is awful. 1. it is disgustingly dirty. i am talking overflowing trashcans, sticky table, skid marks on the walls. and an out of order bathroom that apparently is in the back kitchen /warehouse looking room(is that even legal for a restaurant?). while we were trying to eat, touching as little as possible, they started hauling out huge bags of trash from the back room right by our table. totally inappropriate not to mention unsanitary. the 2 trashcans in front of house remained overflowing. 2. as many others mentioned, the food literally sits out allllllll day. so when we got there at 8:30 pm for dinner the food was half gone(no mac n cheese, no collards, etc) and everything else definitely looked to be in rough shape some crusted over. we almost left on the spot, but not ones to waste a groupon we trudged onwards 3. the food itself wasnt as horrible as i thought it might be, but it wasnt good. my bbq chicken was very dry. the mashed potatoes most likely come from a mix– they were incredibly starchy and had little flavor or texture. i did enjoy the green beans which had a little kick to them. we also were allowed a dessert choice and a drink. the sweet tea was the worst sweet tea i have ever had in my life. it had a weird pink tint to it and tasted nothing like tea should. i didnt even bother trying the box style carrot cake after all the other duds. 4. and service was awful, again as many people mentioned. we could barely understand the guy who kept muttering at us from behind the counter. but what bothered me the most was the fact he came around and kicked us out at 9 pm when the website says they are open until 10. my friend wasnt even done with her food. we protested and he rudely ignored us and just said we had to leave. terrible. save yourself the time and trouble. and i am not sure if groupon has a feedback mechanism but we should somehow let them know to quit running promotions for these guys bc even the discounted price ISNOTWORTHIT.

I told my friend to meet me there. I explained it’s «no frills» but they have chicken, and he likes chicken. My groupon was expired so I had the cash value. Not a problem for the gentlemen behind the counter. There were 7 people present when we arrived(I have seen it with only 1 patron before). They do a big delivery business. In fairness, I didn’t see any seafood on the hot buffet though it was on the menu. And they were out of some sides. But at these kind of places, you go with the flow. I mean, if you went to a fish shack and they didn’t have catfish that day(likely because it wasn’t in the fresh catch), would you insist they find an old or frozen one? I went big. A little too big. Two entrée with two sides. $ 14.95. You get one piece of chicken(both mine were drumsticks) as an entrée which isn’t that much. But they made up for it in sides. Smothered chicken — Very good. I love me some gravy and breading. Ask for more of the sauce. Easy to come off the bone. Jerk chicken — Nice spice. Again, moist chicken. Mac & Cheese — YUM. Looked like it might be a little dry but NOSIR. I would go back just for this. So good! Sweet potatoes — Also looked pretty generic but they had flavor. Very soft. Nice sweetness. Recommend. Soul Fixins is a solid joint. And for the person who mentioned you can find food like this nearby at bigger portions for less dinero, try naming one place. Because I don’t think you can.

People want their soul food and they want it now, so much that they’d rather stop into Soul Fixins’ in Chelsea than make the trek uptown for something better. Soul Fixins’ is a small simple place with a few tables and a steam counter. The process is simple. Go up, pick your food, pay, eat and enjoy! I went up to the line at the suggestion of my friend and I encountered a slap in the face. An angry girlfriend turned around and accidentally hit my face with her waving hand. She was upset because it wasn’t a sit down restaurant with table service. It is more of self serve and apparently, her boyfriend wasn’t serving fast enough. She complained to the staff that she didn’t like the set up and that their food was cold and she was tired waiting for her plate. Her boyfriend stood quietly, hanging his head in shame. I felt sorry for the guy. So much I let the slap slide. The workers listened to her but there was not much they could do. This customer just needed to vent and get out of there. Talk about disgruntled! Back to the important things, I found Soul Fixins’ to be a cozy dive to get some comfort food. If you like mashed potatoes and mac and cheese, this is your spot. I like sweet potatoes and they had those too. Aside from sweet potatoes, I filled my plate with the mac and cheese. I asked for string beans and they denied me. An entrée comes with two sides only. Vegetables are wasted space anyway! If you like fried chicken, this might not be the place for you as the last two pieces looked pretty sad. The chicken at Popeyes and the supermarket deli look better than these wings. I settled for a leg of smothered chicken. It was delicious, so tender, and slathered with gravy. If you got the mashed potatoes with this, it would have been awesome as their mashed potatoes are very creamy. The ox tail is also good but is mostly fat. I find these entrees at $ 12 to be really expensive, especially when you only get 1 chicken leg. I know I’m a fatass for wanting more but I could eat a lot better with that $ 12. I’d wait for a groupon coupon or some deal before I go back to Soul Fixins’.

$ 6.50 for a chicken lunch plate with two sides… with real cooked food. Solid & satisfying this popular Chelsea soul food spot with sit down tables and food that is filling and cheap. I eat here or take out about once a week. I like their fried chicken. You can pick your meat and two sides. The depression lunch special($ 6.50) offers rice and peas and mixed veggies, but you can mix and match for a little more. Dinner specials start at $ 10.95 for a meat and two, which is still damn reasonable for the ‘hood. We went with ribs, mashed and cabbage last night. The ribs tasted glazed with duck sauce real old school and the mashed was comphy good and cabbage fresh and hearty. They will fix you up good with homestyle food at Soul Fixins and they are nice here. Gotta try the meatloaf next time.

Terrible experience. We had a groupon and ended up not even getting to eat. We handed the guy behind the counter our phone with the groupon already pulled up and he started by hitting the mark as redeemed button before he wrote down the number. He then claimed that he had not done anything and that the groupon was already redeemed. Such a dishonest and rude man. He proceeded to tell us that he could not give us «free food» and we would have to leave. If you have a groupon and have to go, I would recommend printing it out just in case so they do not try to cheat you. We ended up leaving and getting a refund from groupon. The food looked like it had been sitting out for a while and they did not have nearly close to everything on the menu. The interior looked pretty run down. I would def avoid and go somewhere else.

Was so hungry after work, needed to full my body with soul. This was the only soul in the area. Place looks dirty and gritty, not sure if they’re going for the dirty south atmosphere or its just plain dirty and un-maintained. Food however was spot on, got bbq chicken, mac n cheese, and spicy collard greens. Spicy collard greens was a little on the salty side, but it stands out and gives you a kick from the usual boring veggies other places have. Chicken was mooooooist! Mmmm. Scoutmob coupon still going at 50% off.

Not half bad. First you have to go into the place with the right expectations — as more of a takeout joint rather than a fancy dinner. Thanks to the informative Unilocal reviews, I wasn’t expecting much in terms of décor/ambiance. It was a pretty OK looking place, small and cozy. The food is laid out as more cafeteria/buffet style, but I didn’t mind it. Service: The service(just one guy behind the counter at the time) was good. He was very friendly looking and joked around with us. Like I said, it’s more a takeout place than anything so they don’t really serve you at the table, you basically just point, choose and sit. Food: They don’t have all the food items on their menu always readily available. I was looking forward to getting mashed potatoes/gravy but they were nowhere to be found. The food itself is decent. It isn’t served completely hot, so be prepared for mediocrity in terms of heat. I would say their jerky chicken is much better than their fried chicken. Their fried chicken, at one part of it, had a distinct fish flavor to it which almost made me sick. Thankfully the rest of it was a-ok. The mac and cheese is my favorite part. Nicely flavored and cooked well. For rice, they permit you to add whatever chicken flavor sauce you want(i.e. bbq chicken sauce, jerky chicken sauce) so that was a nice surprise. It is probably because the rice might taste bland otherwise, but at least they put in some effort. My boyfriend also liked their chocolate cake. Price: We spent $ 23 including tip in total including the groupon, but I think the food overall was worth $ 15 for the two of us combined. Crowd: The crowd was inconsistent; when we first arrived at 7 pm, there were only a couple of people. Then, after a while, many many more people entered to get food. Location: Close to Chelsea Cinemas, which is very convenient. In terms of the neighborhood, it’s definitely a more shady part of Chelsea at night. We had police cars outside shining their lights at one point. Makes me happy to have a 6’3 guy around during such times(in addition to some of the self-defense skills I have up my sleeve ;) But nothing problematic besides that occurred. Personally won’t make another trip here, but it was nice trying it out.
