We originally wanted to go to Katz’s Deli but this place was super close to our hotel in Midtown so we gave it a shot. Did not disappoint one bit. The food and service was top notch all the way. Ordered the Reuben for a hangover cure and it was perfect medicine. Delicious corned beef and sauerkraut piled high smothered in swiss cheese over rye bread. The Russian dressing on the side topped it off perfectly. The wife got the corned beef hash and eggs which was probably the best I’ve ever had. The portion sizes are huge here but it’s also a tad pricey. About what you’d expect for a Jewish deli which are never cheap. Top off the fact that this place is very Unilocal friendly, clean, attentive, and serving amazing food it’s a winner all the way. We left super satisfied and Katz’s became a distant memory.

I’ve been to very few restaurants where service was poor enough to ruin my entire experience. Our server gave us the lunch specials menu when we were seated at 2:55pm. Then, all of a sudden, another waitress came over and snatched the menu out of our hands and aggressively stated, «That’s over! That’s over already! No more lunch specials!» Incredibly rude and distasteful. What a jarring start to our meal. Why were the lunch specials menu given to us if it was«over» in the first place? Lunch specials are until 3. We were seated by 2:55pm. Why did the waitress snatch it out of our hands without telling us first? Why did she have to ruin our entire meal? I had such high expectations for Sarge’s, only to leave severely disappointed. The meal started off sour, and we hadn’t even tried any of the pickles yet. We will not be returning to Sarge’s for pastrami sandwiches. Improve your service!

Loved this place… I think it rivals Katz’s but without the crazy lines and chaos. Food was amazing and the service was great. The décor is dated but in a really good old new York way. There are no longer many places like this in NYC. I Look forward to going back soon!

Sarge’s Deli makes a big corn beef sandwich. The meat alone stands at the very least 3 inches high with a flavorful corn beef taste. The inside looked good with light accessories as filling around the corned beef, add cheese. The fries were okay, nothing amazing. Got the order to go and had pickles and some plastic canisters of sides with my order. Nothing much except they make a very good sandwich.

We decided to have our dinner here after reading the good reviews. 1– The food was avarage, definitely not excellent. We had, –Deluxe chicken sandwich(4⁄10) –Cheeseburger on pan(5⁄10) –Strawberry cheesecake(6⁄10) 2– Service was good. The blonde lady who were serving was nice.(6.5÷10) 3– The staff at the cash desk was a bit tricky. I showed my «first check-in» offer on Unilocal to get the 10% off but the girl touched my phone screen so the offer screen went gone. She told me to check in again but the system did not let me to do it once again(of course). I told her that i just checked in then the other guy took my phone and«tried» to see and said«oh maybe you should leave a positive review»(!). I told him that i took a screenshot of the offer screen and i don’t need to leave a positive review just because he asked for it. Then they were ok to give me the 10% off. I guess now i know why there are so many very positive feedbacks here…

I come to NYC once every month or so to pretty much spend a weekend eating. Sarge’s has been on my list of places to try for months now, but I could never find the time to make a visit. When I took my mother to NYC this month as a Mother’s Day gift and she mentioned she wanted to eat at a Jewish Deli, I knew exactly where to take her. Having not slept well the night before, I was not feeling too well and was worried I was going to get sick during the trip. One bowl of matzo bowl soup and half a corned beef sandwich later and I felt warm and content. The food is delicious. The kind of delicious that makes you«mmmm» after every bite. My mother was giddy, the corned beef was so thinly sliced, tender and flavorful. The matzo ball soup was liquid comfort. And the cheesecake! The cheesecake! Our waitress caught my eyes close as I took a bite and smiled, saying, «It’s good, right?» Oh yes! It is GOOD. Maybe the best I’ve ever had. I walked out saying, «that might have been the best meal I’ve ever had in NYC.» We liked it so much, my mother asked if we could go back before we left, and so we did, having the same meal but trying the pastrami instead. Just as good, just as satisfying and we left just as happy! Can’t wait until my next visit!

I will be brief because a lack of integrity is a non-starter in my book, so the food is somewhat irrelevant. We arrived at Sarge’s a little after 6pm on Monday, May 30th, 2016 which happened to be Memorial Day. Many places around Manhattan were giving military ID holders freebies on Memorial Day out of gratitude for our service, a nice and much appreciated touch. So when I read the menu in Sarge’s window and it said: «Dinner Special(5−9PM Everyday): Choice of Soup or Salad And Beverage(Coffee, Tea, Or Fountain Drink) — All For The Price Of The Entrée Alone», we went in. After being seated, I asked our server(see photo) about the special because I was contemplating ordering the meatloaf entrée($ 18.95). She told me: «It’s Memorial Day, the offer isn’t good on holidays». Rather than go outside and recheck the menu, I believed her, assuming I had misread the offer, ordering the meatloaf anyway. After paying the bill, I went outside and snapped a picture of the menu in question(see menu photo), proving that I was not hallucinating because it states: «5−9PMEVERYDAY» and«every day» means Monday-Friday, Saturday and Sunday, ANDHOLIDAYS. The meatloaf was massive and«OK», my wife’s French Dip($ 18.95) was expensive, but«decent», and the cheesecake($ 6.95) large and«delicious», but our server’s deception left a bad taste in my mouth. I could really care less about getting a free $ 7 soup or salad and a $ 2 beverage included with my meal(even though my blog is called«TravelValue»), but it is the principle and an inherent lack of integrity on the part of our server that spoiled this meal. Beside the deception, her service was«abrupt»(it is a NYC kosher deli after all), but efficient and I gave her a 20% tip, something I regretted after reading the«Dinner Special» verbiage for the second time. I do not make a habit of rewarding liars. Deceptive waitress aside, they probably would have received 5 or 6 Bombs Out Of 10, but like our founding father George Washington, I cannot tell a lie … CombatCritic Gives Sarge’s Deli 1 Bomb Out Of 10 And A Spot On My WALLOFSHAME … More Bombs Are Better!

Put simply, one of the best pastrami sandwiches I’ve ever had in my life! It was just a pile of meat between two slices of rye, but wow. The pastrami was warm, melt in your mouth soft, and absolutely delicious. My friend ordered the Reuben, and that was a lot more decadent– served open faced and baked with a mountain of cheese. They also give delicious pickles and some amazing coleslaw to nibble on before your food arrives. Service was also friendly and efficient.

I make it to new york every so often work, and I always try to have some good pastrami while I’m there. I normally hit up katz’s but had been a bit bored with it lately so thought I’d try some other options. This was listed as one of the best deli’s so I thought I’d give it a shot. I had the«third avenue», a hot sandwich with pastrami and corned beef. Ehrmagerd! Delicious! The meat was awesome, the fries with it were really good too! The pastrami was right on par with some of the best pastrami I’d had in the area! I really wish I’d had room for dessert because a lot of it looked really good. Will have to go back on an empty stomach at some point :).

Sarge’s rocks! I came here two nights in a row because I had to get that reuben again. It isn’t cheap, but they aren’t stingy with it either. In fact a buddy and me split it both times. After the first visit I would have given them 5 stars for the reuben alone(that meat seemed like it was piled from here to heaven). On the 2nd night the reuben was still good, but not the gloriousness that it was on the first trip so had to dock a star for the inconsistency. We also had their kishka(also known as derma), their loaded fries(topped with bacon and cheese) and their Gefilte fish. Plus, the reuben is served with pickles and cole slaw. The kishka was really good. Their loaded fries were better in theory than in practice. Their regular plain fries are great though. I’ve had better Gefilte fish. It wasn’t bad, just not great. Their thousand island dressing, which I recommend using liberally for the reuben, is pretty terrific. Tina, our server, rocks too and the atmosphere is exactly what you’d picture a New York Deli to be like. Love this place and definitely will be back.

One of my favorite delis in the city. The matzoh ball soup is among my absolute favorites, and the other items I’ve had(particularly the sandwiches) have also been very good. Another nice thing: it’s generally cheaper than a lot of the other comparable delis, sometimes by a very wide margin. Overall, this is a really good option in Murray Hill, and I would honestly consider going here instead of the far more famous Second Avenue Deli down the street.

Just as good if not better them my last review. No room for my favorite cheesecake today. I’ll be back and make a meal out of that! Hanna was the best server. She nailed my order. Three fried eggs, crispy bacon, rye toast buttered and sweet potato fries. Service was fast, friendly and professional. No issue with paying by credit. I even got the 10% Unilocal discount. My lunch was $ 10 plus tip. I’ll return…

Great Jewish deli. I ordered 3rd Ave special. A large open face hot pastrami hot corned beef sandwich. With a side of fries and a slice of derma. 19.99. Great deal for the amount of food served. The meats were sliced paper thin and were tender as good meat should be. Most of the visible fat was trimmed and so it was all edible. The waitstaff was genuine and made you feel at home. It’s not Carnegie or Katz, but it was a great experience and I left full.

We don’t have many Jewish delis where I’m from, so I always make it a point to get some real deli food when I’m in NYC. Sarge’s is fantastic, and is probably the best deli I’ve ever been to. We arrived around 1pm on a weekday, and were promptly seated and immediately served a few pickles and coleslaw. Sarge’s menu is very large and a bit overwhelming, so I ended up ordering my deli favorites: a hot corned beef sandwich and a bowl of matzoh ball soup. The corned beef was very tender and sliced paper-thin, with all the visible fat trimmed off. The amount of corned beef was very generous, but not grotesquely large like at the Carnegie deli. Since it was sliced so thinly, it was extremely tender and practically melted in my mouth. The mustard complimented it perfectly. The bowl of matzoh ball soup was very generously sized, with plenty of salty chicken broth with a large fluffy matzoh ball. The broth did not have any vegetables or noodles floating in it — it was just liquid — and super tasty. I would definitely want to go back again the next time I’m in NYC. Yum!

It was our last day of our NYC visit and my wife and I still hadn’t gotten a truly good New York Bagel. Finally, that void was filled by the delicious ET bagel at Sarge’s Deli. The ambiance at Sarge’s is what you would typically find from a traditional famous NY deli with all the signed pictures of head-shots from celebrities who have frequented the location in the past. I ordered the scrambled egg breakfast with breakfast potatoes, turkey bacon, with the ET bagel and veggie cream cheese. The eggs were cooked a little over for my preference but the bagel was perfect. The potatoes were well seasoned and crispy; just how I liked em. The turkey bacon was offered at no additional up charge which was definitely appreciated. Slightly toasted, fresh and doughy this ET bagel finally satisfied the craving for a true NY bagel. The portions at Sarges are huge and pretty reasonably priced. My wife and I had a Groupon and with two full breakfasts we were still under our $ 30 allotment. We finished our breakfast with three chocolate rugelachs. If in the Murray HIll area, be sure to stop by Sarge’s deli. I was still on my Katz’s kick, but I heard they got some killer sandwiches as well.

YUM. I love me some deli food, and this place delivers. After scrutinizing the(very) long menu, I settled on a veggie omelette with a side of kippered salmon. I then learned that Sarge’s doesn’t do kippered salmon by the piece or pound, and if I wanted to satisfy by salmon craving then I’d need to order the whole platter. Dayum. I then changed my order to a NEO — nova, eggs and onions — omelette-style, well-done home fries and wheat toast. Hubby got scrambled eggs with an everything bagel and home fries. The food came out pretty quickly and looked UNREAL… photos below. The portion was huge, but that didn’t stop me from licking the plate clean. Hubby’s bagel was the best we had in NYC. So fresh, doughy and delicious. The only downside was that I stole a bite from him and was punished with a chewy piece of cardboard that I think was baked inside. We finished the meal with three chocolate rugelach and we’re insanely stuffed. Definitely our most satisfying breakfast in the city.

I really do like the food here but holy fuck was it expensive. A sandwich and a soup for 33 dollars? I understand New York is expensive and coming from LA I’m used to pricey Jewish food(Langer’s isn’t exactly price friendly) but Sarge’s makes Langer’s look cheap. Good food but for 33 bones plus tip I’ll just go to a sit down restaurant. Food is on point, price will make you sweat.

Old school all the way– no frills, no fuss. We had a Groupon deal here which made their rather exorbitant prices merely bearable. The matzo ball soup and hot pastrami really hit the spot. We got in, got out, had a nice lunch and then wrote this review. We’d go again if we were in the area and had some money to spend.

An immense menu, a la your basic Greek diner, with several hundred items no one will ever order. The prices, though, are much higher, and the food is just plain bad. Another Robert Sietsma recommendation that turns out to stink. Well, this purports to be a Jewish deli, so we ordered accordingly. The tongue was incredibly salty, and just foul — like mystery meat. The pastrami incredibly salty, barely edible. They claim that the meats are cured and smoked in house. I hope not. The room was empty, and very sad. The service was sullen and angry. Never again.

I live in neighborhood and come here time to time. Usually it’s good dinner/brunch spot but today I had awful experience. We were ordering dinner-2 of us– and in the middle of our order waitress said that«oh no you cannot order just one dinner menu and share!?!» I was choosing my 2 side dishes and my boyfriend was gonna order sandwich but with whatever psychic ability she has, she decided that we will just order one meal and share. Which I understand in certain kind of situation. But first of all at least she needed to wait until we finished our order and second, the restaurant was almost empty so it doesn’t really matter. Plus I saw the next table just ordered 1 sandwich between 2 ppl and share! I don’t know what is her issue but it was really not very nice of her. Quite rude actually.

Stopped through on a whim. My son & I decided to venture into the city for a couple of hours to kill some time before our evening plans in St. James. We had no destination or even type of food that we wanted. I put in breakfast in the search of Unilocal & Sarge’s popped up. My son saw the hash &BOOM it’s a done deal! That’s where we’re headed. We were greeted by a friendly smiling blonde lady who told us to sit anywhere. Son ordered the Corned Beef Hash with Home Fries &3 Eggs over Easy with a side of bacon & toast. I tasted it and it was delicious. I in turn was wooed by the Junior Rueben. I asked for Pastrami instead of Corned Beef. Great choice! The pastrami was moist & flavorful and cut not to thin just how I like it. Rye bread was thick & crisp on the outside & moist on the inside. My son who swore he hated rye bread didn’t even want to try it. I’m the MaMa! I made him! This sandwich made him into a believer! My only gripe was the coleslaw was lacking flavor, but everything else was on point to the utmost so with that, I said who cares about the coleslaw?! Wish I had room for dessert because Marianne said they were good. Maybe next time. But I’ll definitely be back for the pastrami!

This deli has been around since the 60’s so it’s pretty well established. It’s not a kosher deli for those of you crazy enough to put cheese on deli meats(feh!) and they are open on Saturdays. The menu is similar to other deli’s in NY(Second Ave, Katz and Carnegie if they ever open again) Out of all of the deli’s in NYC this one is a bit cheaper than others which is nice. The one thing to try if you go here is their potato salad. It’s almost like dessert!

Yummy! Being from L.A., I was impressed by this honest-to-goodness NY-style deli! The pastrami was delicious with a half-sour pickle. I’m sure the matzo ball soup is good, I’m just not a fan of this soup in general(too chicken-ey tasting). I loved the old-school vibe, and we had a little *sighting* here of Fyvush Finkel. I love Sarge’s deli. If you’re looking to avoid the ridiculously long lines of tourists seeking to have what she was having but still enjoy deliciously warm cuts of meat on rye, this is the place you want to be. The complimentary pickles and slaw are a fantastic way to start your stay. If it’s your first time you must get the pastrami on rye… unless it’s St. Patty’s Day, then corned beef with cabbage. My personal favorite is the soup & half sandwich special, I usually get the mattzo ball soup with cow’s tongue sandwich w/fried onions. The staff are warm and welcoming, always accommodating, and make you feel like your sitting in your mother’s kitchen. The décor is exactly what you’d expect to find in an old New York deli, the walls adorned with famous celebs who’ve dined here, and NYC memorabilia. Sarge’s Deli is a staple of New York.

Went there for dinner based on reviews of the place. Ordered a hot pastrami on rye and it was delish. Place is a simple, authentic New York deli. The portions were generous as was expected based on what previous folks had claimed. Service was quick and efficient. Then again it was a Monday night and was not overly crowded. Would definitely return. A little off the beaten path since it is down on third avenue if you are a tourist in town but certainly worth checking out.

We decided to visit Sarges based on the Unilocal score! Not sure how it gets 4 Stars unless it’s because they give big portions of mediocre(not good) food. And service was an order taker, I wasn’t sure she could talk until she dropped off the food, had to ask for everything. The blueberry pancakes were over cooked and the blueberries were dumped in the center so no blueberries for most of the pancake and then all blueberries in the center bites. Potatoes that came with an egg dish were cold the first go around and then the hot ones they brought were greasy mush(but hot). Cannot recommend and won’t be back!

Dayum! The corned beef here is unbelievably awesome. I’ll preface this with the fact that it took a year of someone convincing me for me to dine here. Finally, I caved. Now I’ll be doing the convincing if we don’t eat here often! I did try the iconic landmark recently so I have a good comparison. While the landmark, which will remain unnamed(but it rhymes with hats), has an awesome corned beef-this place by far exceeds it. The reuben is served open faced. It doesn’t have an overwhelming amount of cheese and the meat is sliced to just the perfect thickness. The corned beef is juicy, tender and not at all greasy. It’s about $ 20 and will last for two meals. We ordered onion rings as a side. They were homemade and ridiculously good. They were large, crunchy and flavorful. So you ask why I’m not dining here right now, well it’s the peanut butter cheesecake. Nothing about it tasted right. The flavors just didn’t mesh and it tasted stale. However, the plain cheesecake was one of the best I have ever tried. It was creamy but light. They serve a gigantic slice. I do wish the strawberries on top were sliced because I like one with each bite :-) Our waitress was slow to come over and to clear the table. However, when I was able to catch her eye she was polite and attentive. Eating dessert with onion rings on the table was less than appealing. However, I won’t knock you for that because it was a Sunday and the food was THAT good. See you soon, Sarge.

I’m already dreaming of the day I can return! What a wonderful place to eat and relax. The service was top notch! The people extraordinarily sweet and friendly. They explained everything to me! I felt so comfortable and at home. It felt like going to grandma’s house! I ate my dinner(leftovers from Thanksgiving) home. I went to Sarge’s for the Peanut Butter Cheesecake for desert. They were out of it. I asked what was their most popular. I was told the Strawberry. That’s what I had! I was not disappointed. Watch out Cheesecake Factory you have competition! Fresh Strawberries, soft, moist, fluffy, cream cheese. It was a huge slice. Well worth the $ 8.95 plus tax. I asked to use the bathroom before I left. Excellent huge facility in back that was nice and clean! The place has a nice steady stream of customers. The breakfasts looked really good. In the front as you enter is a deli. It’s full of delicious foods. Naturally they have a big selection of cakes and pastries. Check out all my pictures if you want to see the food selection for take out and deserts. They deliver all over Manhattan. Depending on where you live there may be an extra charge. They are open 24÷7÷365! In NYC you can order anything at all. No matter what time it is and find a place that will deliver. My sister and I were visiting and after a day of walking around and spending time in a few frightening taxi rides, we needed food. And we had NO energy to go out. Then we found Sarge’s Deli on Unilocal and it said, «delivers». Yippee. Now, Sarge’s has one of the largest menus I have ever experienced. It’s crazy… Like, silly crazy. But if you have a large number of people and differing tastes, then you need a menu like this to get everyone what they want. I had: Potato Latke, cheese and bacon fries, a grilled cheese sandwich and an éclair My sister: Pancakes and eggs and a soda. We were in heaven. It was delivered, front desk called me and I picked it up. In my slippers, then sat in my tiny hotel room, watched TV and eat my food like a tired college kid would. I want to go back and eat in, just to try the Reuben and well… every other thing on the menu. I might be there a long time!

I first visited Sarge’s Deli sometime in the late 90’s… and I’ve been making a point of eating there every time I go to New York, ever since! Let me tell you about the aromas… it SMELLS like a deli ought to(IMHO). No kidding — once you walk inside, your mouth starts to water. Walking past the counters on the way to the tables only adds to the experience. If you stop to gaze at everything, your brain can easily go into overwhelm mode. Be sure to get a booth, if available. The food here is LARGE, and that takes up room. Even the pickles and coleslaw served with every meal is pretty ample — especially if there are only two of you sharing them! I am a big fan of Sarge’s matzo ball soup! All kidding aside, I do not get matzo ball soup at any other restaurant. Ever. …but at Sarge’s? Always. Try it… you’ll like it! By the time I’m done with the soup and the aforementioned complimentary coleslaw and pickles, I start to doubt my sanity at having ordered yet more food. Especially when you get a load of the SIZE of their sandwiches. Even the ‘half’ sandwich is enormous. And the flavors? Dee-lish! Their corned-beef Reuben is my personal fave. And dessert? Oy! You can hurt yourself here. Seriously. You can get stretch marks.(Consider yourself warned.) So why not five stars? Perhaps because it is a bit of a hole-in-the-wall. …but my, oh my, WHAT a hole in the wall!

This comes with pickles, coleslaw, and a soup before as well. I get the noodle soup which is a good starter and the sweet pickles and slaw are great. Then, the meats. I get one pastrami and the other corn beef. Mustard is all I need. It’s definitely a great lunch deal for all of this food. A lot of people I come here with can’t even finish their meal. Forget Katz, forget carnegie deli… Yes Sarge’s is out of the way but you’ll get just as authentic of an experience without all the touristy hassle. All food comes with a side of coleslaw and pickles. Must orders: Beef French Dip: Rare, juicy beef with a dip that is basically butter, meat juices, and salt(lord almighty is it delicious) with a side of fries. Somehow the food doesn’t even feel that greasy even though I know I must have taken in more than my share of cholesterol… Pastrami Sandwich — what can I say. It’s a classic. Pastrami piled on high on rye bread. Matzo ball soup: again, just the basics but it is done super well. Hot broth with a not-overly-soggy matzo ball. Can you really ask for much more on a cold winter day?
