Peppino is a jewel in the confusing cotton-​poly swathe of overpriced little «salons» in the East Village. He charges half what anyone else charges (which more than excuses the stripped down décor), and he actually knows hair… he’s been doing it since he was 8 years old in Italy.
When you go to these other places, you have to think what it actually means to have your hair done by these 20 and 30-​somethings who help sex up the sexy salons. They’re basically babies. They’re insecure and want to make the customer happy. They don’t have all that much experience. They have new expensive businesses with extra overhead (looking cool isn’t cheap), and they need to pay for it. If you go to them and say, «I was thinking I’d look better as a blonde,» they might know better – and they might not, but what are they going to do? Make you mad by telling you that you’d look like a street walker and you’d be better off saving your $ 300 for your next abortion? Of course they’re not. Not that Peppino would say something like that. He’s a nice guy.
The thing is, Peppino is GENUINELY cool. He’s one of the rare authentic East Village Italian barbers left. I asked him, «If you’ve been cutting for over 40 years, how do you stay so fresh?» And he said, «I never cut the same way twice. Sure, each person I can do the same, and people ask for the same kind of haircut as someone else, but everybody has different hair, they all have their own challenges. I like that.»
Peppino is the only hairdresser I’ve ever seen who didn’t try to lie to me and pretend I’d look good with bangs. I know I’d look terrible with bangs. I always hope I can have bangs. And every stylist always tells me, «Heck, why not?» and I always back out on the cut because I KNOW. He looked at me and said, «I no recommend it.»
I got the best haircut of my life from Peppino… one that looked amazing for three months as it grew. For whatever it’s worth from this 20-​something: I highly recommend him.

Peppino knows hair. After a lifetime of various haircuts, including ones that made me cry, I walked into Peppino’s shop one day and nervously sat in a chair. I told him what I wanted (trim, freshen up the layers) and he actually listened to me instead of imposing his idea of what looks good. When he was done, I was so happy. Peppino gave me the perfect haircut. My hair was so healthy because of his work. After that, I only went to Peppino. And you know what? I moved away from NYC, and whenever I visit, I go visit Peppino. Seriously. He is a genius with the shears and he is the ONLY person that I trust to cut my hair. Period. Finito. End of story.

the place doesn’t look all that great, but gonzalo cuts a mean cut of hair for a really decent price. the shop itself is kinda old lady-​ish, but gonzalo is young and up on styles etc. i recommend the place (him) for sure…
