The food was exceptional. The service was VERY slow. The ambience was horrible. Three tables next to us had loud and obnoxious people. One table of 5 were there for hours, getting more and more drunk and loud. Finally they were slobbering drunk, screaming and swearing. The management did nothing except continue to serve them alcohol. It was like being at a cheap disgusting bar, except for the hundreds of dollars we paid for our dinner. Never again!!!

Ate here months ago with two friends of ours from out of town but am only reviewing it now since I passed by this place today and was reminded of my poor experience here. I’m always nervous coming to steakhouses because I don’t eat red meat and therefore really have no business being in a steakhouse. This steakhouse is not vegetarian-friendly but does have some options if you’re like me and just don’t eat red meat [seafood, oysters, salads]. I think I ended up with grilled-herb chicken, which was mediocre at best. My fiancé ordered the lobster bisque(delicious), and filet mignon(decent but not great). The couple we were dining with ordered the roasted onion soup(good), a rack of lamb(good), and the surf and turf filet mignon. This is where things got sticky. All three of us heard our fourth dining companion say«surf and turf filet mignon»(filet mignon and scallops) and instead he was given filet mignon and lobster tails, which is a different dish altogether. Unfortunately the four of us were so busy chatting we didn’t notice that he had been given the wrong dish since the main part of both dishes was the filet mignon. Only halfway through the dish did he notice that there were no scallops in what he’d ordered. At this point we contacted the waiter and asked where the scallops were since he’d ordered the surf and turf dish and the waiter said«no, you ordered the filet mignon with lobster tails». Um… no he didn’t. There was some back and forth and overall the waiter seemed unwilling to accept he’d brought out the wrong dish. The waiter’s english was also less than perfect which may have contributed to the confusion. We didn’t have the menus with us so didn’t realize that there was such a significant price difference between these two entrees(38 vs 82 dollars!!!), so our friend dropped it and continued on with his dish. At the end when the check came around he was shocked to see his entrée was $ 50 more than what he’d expected. We brought this up to the waiter and he basically said«you ate the whole dish, so there’s no issue with the bill». Well… we pointed out you brought us the wrong thing and you refused to admit it… and didn’t even offer to bring out the correct dish. This reeks of poor service to me. Sorry, but someone shouldn’t have to pay an extra $ 50 dollars because you misheard and brought him the wrong thing. There was opportunity for the situation to be rectified midway through the meal and the waiter blew it. For a steakhouse with these prices, I’d really expect more honest, customer-focused service.

My family and I walked the high line southbound to the end on a warm winter night. Then went straight to the old homestead. Such an old school, classy place. My waiter poured my wine with love. The strip was the best I ever had. The entire evening was perfect

Some friends picked this place with no clue. They were looking for something good but not expensive. Too bad it’s very expensive! We tried the burgers, they were tasty, good. The service was ok, not bad, not amazing. So at the end, you feel that you paid too much despite the quality.

Awesome awesome awesome! I love eating here when I am in Manhattan. The ambiance is nicer than many of the other high end steakhouses and the staff is very attentive. Don’t forget a wonderful piece of beef as well. Do yourself a favor and have a great meal when you are here next.

Promoting itself as New York’s oldest steakhouse, the Old Homestead in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District is an institution. It still pack diners in after nearly 150 years. And the food is good — of course steaks in their many varieties are what is really being judged here. I recently enjoyed a delicious Filet Mignon slider at the Old Homestead. A Caesar salad and French fries accompanied. The waitress working the front tables near the bar was extremely friendly and efficient. If you want to try one of New York City’s famous steak houses, the Old Homestead is a good place to begin!

What can you say about a restaurant that’s been in existence since just after the Gettysburg address was delivered — Not a whole hell of a lot! Anything with that kind of longevity and history must have something going on that works, and indeed Old Homestead does! The old world /school ambience clicks in as soon as you walk through the front door. You can feel Boss Tweed’s or Al Smith’s presence cutting there 20 oz. steaks and drinking their 24 year old scotch. The closest thing we have to this in L.A. is Musso and Frank’s established some half a century after Old Homestead opened its doors. This place is so good in so many ways it’s difficult to pontificate for that long as it would this review too long, so let’s cut to the chase: A mean Cosmo and Bloody Mary A yummy Fried Shrimp and Fried Calamari appetizer Nice salads, we had two The New York Steaks are the real deal Great French fries Great creamed spinach Massive, I mean huge prawns in their cocktails Just really really good. We had a power lunch with sixteen people and all left very happy campers.

An excellent steakhouse. But you need to order steak. And just steak. Not because steak is the best food(though it is), but because the other menu items just aren’t that fantastic. The side order of mushrooms we got? Eh. The zucchini fritter that comes with the filet mignon? Eh. The bread basket? Eh. But the steak — the steak was great. In addition to the filet mignon, we ordered the dry-aged rib steak for two which was outstanding. I highly recommend. So, there you have it folks. When at a steakhouse, order steak. Who knew.

Not to sweet, not to much cream and cake was so moist. UnFbelievable delicious. Overall good food. When I’m in meat packing area only restaurant I like to go for steak.

This use to be my favorite steakhouse until they took my favorite steak off the menu. I would give it a 3 but since they have those banging apps and sides I’ll stick with a 4. The mashed potatoes and the Mac and cheese are a must. It’s not the best steak in ny but the place itself is good.

After reading all these great reviews I was sure that this would be a great place for a steak lover. Unfortunately I was sadly mistaken. When we first arrived at the restaurant we were greeted immediately, we had a variety of places to sit as there were only 2 other parties. When we were seated my date ordered his drink and I ordered Prosecco. I always ask 2 questions of my Prosecco that I believe are fairly simple if you have basic knowledge of what is available in your establishment. 1. Is the Prosecco dry? 2. Does it have a citrus taste? Neither question could be answered by our server and he had to go back and get someone else. At an establishment of this caliber and price, I just felt like this was information the staff should know, but I let it slide. Our second issue was after about 10 minutes we started noticing lots of fruit flies around our table, specifically our drinks. I brought this to the attention of the staff and was told «There nats, fruit flies what are we to do? Would you like to move to another table?» I declined because the restaurant itself was very small so I generally felt like no matter where we sat we would experience this problem. I also considered that they may be attracted to a smell, possibly the cocktail or prosecco. The next issue happen when it took 15 minutes to deliver the bread to our table, after 2 different servers attempted to take our order. Leaving the impression that the staff is not aware of who they were even supposed to be serving. As we ate bread and sat waiting for food my date ordered wine, upon arrival of this wine we noticed the glass had lipstick on it. We sent it back, just to have the second glass free of lipstick but covered in smudge and very much so looking like 3 other people used it first and was never washed. At this point my date was highly frustrated as he couldn’t fathom such subpar service and experience in such an acclaimed and expensive establishment. He sent the wine back for the last time and declined it altogether. By this time our food was ready and true to form of the experience and service we had been experiencing my date was missing one of his side orders. This was the last straw in sub par service. We had our food packed up and we left. This experience was terrible and and overpriced lesson for us.

We popped in here as a party of 7 on a Friday night and found this place comfortably full both at the bar up front and in the dining room on the main floor. The ambiance is more of an old-school place with red leather seats, brown walls and a mostly dim room. The waiters were those that a typical steakhouse would have dressed in all white and pretty vocal with opinions, ordering, etc. For starters, we went with the seafood tower that had an assortment of oysters, clams, tuna, and shrimp to name a few things which were all mostly fresh(a couple of clams and oysters had a bit of weird texture). We then went with a healthier dish of Canadian bacon that was excellent and always a staple. For entrees, we did the Porterhouse and Rib-eye that were both cooked medium. Overall, the flavors were good but I have had better steaks in the city. To accompany the meat, we tried the mac n cheese that was great, creamed spinach which is always good, fries that you can’t mess up that all worked well with the meat. For dessert, we tried some crème brûlée, old-school sundae, cheesecake and chocolate cake, all of which were good. Overall, we had a good experience with service and food. I would rate this right down the middle because I have had better meats but I have also have worse ones. For the price, this feel in line with a typical steakhouse and paid around $ 100/person. Buon appetito.

Food was delicious. The only thing that bothered me it’s the Russian waiter. As soon as he heard me speaking russian his face changed, no smile and very rude at the end. By the way he liked my Brazilian partner. Russian waiter ignored my questions about the food but waited for me to go to the restroom to tell my partner how he like Brazilian girls and how often he travel to Brazil. I prefer enjoy the food and not to get an attitude from people that not happy about their life. So I left restaurant with mixed feelings but I will not come back. Thanks

What a total disappointment! We’ve been to NYC and eaten at some of the best steakhouses in town. From Keens to Peter Luger we’ve loved them all. This trip we decided to try this place because we have been to the one in Vegas and enjoyed it. We had a reservation and were greeted with a smile. We requested to sit upstairs and were accommodated. Upon being seated we ordered some water and cocktails. Once served we didn’t see the waiter for over 30 minutes. We were with guests so it was really awkward to ask WTH was taking so long??? Finally after the 30 minutes we inquired and our waiter appeared. We ordered and again waited and waited. Our salads came and tasted pretty good. Had to ask for bread which annoyed me! Why must we ask? Eventually our meals arrived. We were far from impressed. I ordered the meatball as my entrée and it was served cool. Not HOT as one would expect. It must have sat out before it was served. Pretty crappy considering this isn’t some cheap restaurant. My husbands steak was not as he expected. He ordered it medium rare and it was prepared medium rare however the outside was super charred and had to much fat. Our guests ordered Branzino and The Gotham rib steak. He said it was extremely fatty and would never come back. Such a huge disappointment! It took to long and the flavors were off. Where this is what you sell one would expect perfection! Considering this is one of or THE oldest steakhouse in NYC we felt extremely let down!

It’s one of the steak houses to go to in NYC. Wonderful attentive service and the waiter made some great suggestions. We came in here without a reservation as the restaurant was full but they do have walk up service at the bar with 4 bar tables as well. Took our spot there and to me it was the same great service and wonderful full menu food. Go to items are the slab bacon appetizer. Wonderfully crispy and juicy. Plenty of meat and not too much fat. The shrimp cocktail was great as well and you order it by the piece. Each shrimp was huge with a great cocktail sauce. Had the ribeye and it was cooked to perfection and had a nice char with a nice flavor. The side baked potato with truffle was standard and just a few truffle flakes but as a carb it was your basic fare. Great bloody mary cocktails as well. Strong and a spicey kick. Skip the garlic bread app as it is standard. It’s a great steakhouse and they really take care of you.

I had been a vegan for 5 months prior to coming here, but the tantalizing menu from Old Homestead Steak House convinced me to go all out and order the famous filet mignon! As the name suggests, Old Homestead — located at the entrance to the Meatpacking District — is one of the oldest steakhouses in New York City. I tried the 10 oz filet mignon, which is served a top a hashed brown potato cake with bordelaise sauce. The filet mignon was a little overcooked and was a bit tougher than I would have liked, but the service was impeccable and the staff was very friendly. Probably not the best steakhouse I have ever been to, but it’s certainly up there in the ranking!

Video link:
