This was the first natural salon I visited since deciding to go natural. I was very disappointed with my experience in this salon. Not only was I overcharges($ 90 for 3 braids) but the stylist was not in fact a natural hair stylist but a young girl who only had experience braiding hair in a hair shop. After my wash, where the ‘stylist’ used what smelled and felt like cheap shampoo, she proceeded to comb through my hair with a rat tail comb while wet… overall I would never recommend this salon to anyone… ever… Unilocal forced me to give it 1 star although I believe that is too much

False advertising location in the city when it’s really in New Jersey is very tacky. Initially around 2014 I scheduled an appointment on a Wednesday when I assumed it was in Harlem. When I got there the shop was closed. I called and was told it was in New Jersey. This second time around two days ago, I scheduled an appointment to see if her shop can be open in the city on Wednesday and was told she need to contact someone and for me to call her back. I said ok, she said thank-you and whatever. I hung up and thought that was unprofessional. This website info was very misleading and yet had this catty attitude because she wants clients that lives in New Jersey when she advertised it in Harlem. A complete joke may I add because she’s definitely a missed opportunity.

I got my starter locs done here as double-strand twist. The wash was okay– nothing herbal or invigorating so my hair didn’t feel«fresh to death» just okay. I got about 120 double-strand twists but it took a whopping 4 hours because another appointment came in and $ 150. My hair is pretty short and I’m nervous to see how much it will cost me when it gets longer. I may have to alternate between doing it myself. I chose this place because they have experience with interlocking and palm-rolling. Everyone there seems quite on point and they make you feel extremely comfortable.

Jane B started my dreadlocks today and she did an amazing job! The salon is small, welcoming, and impeccably clean. There was another really cool stylist there who specializes in braids, cornrows, and twists, so if you’re a sister with natural hair, this spot has got you covered. Jane B gave me a free consultation regarding the different methods that we could go about starting my dreadlocks based on my hair’s texture. She knew her stuff! I wore dreadlocks for almost a decade many years ago, so I opted for the traditional method; coils that will eventually lead to palm rolling as my locks mature. My afro was pretty«tall» when I walked into the salon, so I walked out with the cutest, tightest, little coils that fall just beneath my ears. I will be definitely be a regular at Nu-Locs!

Kama did my locs today and did an excellent job, truly, I can’t remember the last time my hair looked this good. She was right on time, I was her only client, and she took meticulous care of my locs. I’ve already made my appointment for my graduation next month.

I went to this salon to talk to a stylist before I began locing my hair. The stylist I spoke was not as welcoming as I would have liked. When I told her I had wanted locs for about a year, but had been discouraged by others till now, she was so surprised at how long I waited that she laughed at me, I thought that was inappropriate. I asked about sizing, and she told me that the salon only offered one size, «medium», and you could not start them any bigger or smaller because that was the«right size» for locs. She also said they only started them with comb coils, because that is the only«right way» to start locs. I don’t really have a problem with a stylist educating me, after all I came there for knowledge, but she had a very matter-of-fact tone, like a «this is the way we do it here, so if you don’t like it, whatever, that’s on you» type of attitude. I left feeling like I would have a hard time speaking to her about how I wanted my hair to look once I finally started my locs, so I decided against booking an appointment.

Loved the experience of getting my natural hair conditioned and pampered. Nicole creates her own shampoos and conditioners and they both do wonders to moisturize and strengthen natural hair. On my visit, I received a cut and a twisted up-do(which she had to talk me into because I have a distaste for up-do’s). She is very knowledgeable on how to grow natural hair and gave me several hair care tips and supplements I can take to speed along the process of growing healthy and luxurious hair without relaxers. Just an idea of the services she offers — Sisterlocks, two strand twist, twisted up-do’s, dreads and more. The conditioner was a little pricey(maybe $ 30) but so worth it. My hair has never felt or looked so soft in my life! I also took my daughter there a few days later for a wash, condition, and cut. Let’s just say her curly locks were beautifully coifed to perfection. I will definitely go back! Nu-locs is more of a hair spa than a hair salon. You feel pampered from the moment you walk in the door to the moment you leave.
