Pretty much on par with Big Wong’s on Mott Street, New Hon Wong offers very similar selections of congee, wonton noodles, and some dimsum made to order. The place definitely needs a facelift but you can’t really complain when most of the menu is under $ 10 and you can be out in 10 – 15 minutes. The staff has been changing quite frequently and rumor has it they are on their home stretch of operations so get in if you’re looking for some very fast and very very casual Cantonese food.

Location is the best for those who live by the subway for a quick extra dish to bring home. Food is also good, especially the meats hanging in the front. I recommend Roast Pig, very crunchy on the outside and tasty on the inside, low fat is how I like my meat. Staff. This is the big no-no. I don’t know how other people do their math but if everytime I pay and it goes to the nearest dollar, then something is wrong. Let me pause this, and explain how they calculate the price of the meat(for pork at least), they weight it. So if they round, I am absolutely certain they round up, but I don’t like that. I want to be able to see the pricing and to see if they are honest. I can only warn others to be ware of the staff and their dishonesty. TL;DR: Good food, good location. Bad work ethics, perhaps dishonesty. Beware when buying. Ask for price first. There is no way it is always rounded to the nearest dollar.

For their location, I kind of expected better. I gotten the crispy skin pork for take out and it was good. It’s hard to go wrong with that. I’ve also gotten their duck noodle soup. It was really mediocre. The key to a good noodle soup is in the broth and this broth was lacking. It was very tasteless which it’s hard to image because duck soup is so good. Their roasted duck is pretty good but I’ve had better. Whenever I see this place now, I avoid it. There are so many good places to eat in the city especially when it comes to Chinese food, I really don’t feel the need to go back to this one.

This place looks just like a typical roast shop in Hong Kong but back in the 80s. The place looks like it needs a serious update! Even the cash register was super old but still functioning.(Wow, NYC China Town is like stepping out of a time machine!) Anyway, just like Justin W.‘s review, I am basing this review on a take out order of congee(rice porridge Asians give to kids, have for breakfast, eat when they’re feeling poorly, make with leftover meat) with pork and century egg and a fried dough stick for only $ 5.25. This made a filling breakfast for two. The congee was creamy and it was loaded with meat and egg. The fried stick was huge and we initially thought they gave us two. Mmm! I could eat that again!

Food is half decent but they really skimp on the meat and give you more rice than anything. I used to eat there because the lunch specials were decently priced, however they seem to raise prices without changing the menus or telling the customers. It’s a shitty thing to do. And instead of telling me before I order, they tell me after I waited 10 mins for the food. When I told them that’s not what I paid last week, the lady yelled at me. This is not the first time they have been shitty. My mom ordered a whole chicken from them and they charged her $ 10 more«because things are more expensive now.» Another time I ordered beef mei fun noodle soup and they gave me egg noodle instead. When I told them, they didn’t give a fuck. And yet another time they gave me something completely different from what I ordered… With no apologies. I had hoped they would learn from their mistakes but they didn’t. Now they have lost a loyal customer.

Fantastically cheap for really pretty good Chinese food. My roommate(from HK) ordered the pork noodle soup($ 5.50), which he said was good, and I got the beef & wonton noodle soup($ 6.50), which had a ton of ngau lam and maybe 6+ big, house-made wonton. Our vegetarian friend had several options, too. (Cash only — it’s Chinatown.)

I wanted to see whether it was possible to, within one hour, get from Hell’s Kitchen to Chinatown and back on the Q Train. It was possible! Unfortunately, I found a strand of hair near the entrance of the container of roast duck flat noodles when I returned to Hell’s Kitchen to eat my take out item. I ordered the roast duck with flat noodles. The roast duck was less flavorful than most, and the broth for the flat noodles was also bland. For some reason, the duck served here was much more fatty-tasting than many other places. For a better experience, go to Big Wong King or Big Wing Wong(a/k/a Wong Kee Restaurant Inc.). I should totally have taken the time to walk over there for food, instead. Ugh.

I’ve had better, and you likely have too if you’ve been to more than one Chinese place. Delivery took quite long even though I’m close to the restaurant, and the food was mediocre. The crispy chicken isn’t crispy at all, and it’s far too bland. The roast pork was better and actually does have crispy skin. Unlike other places, they don’t dose their roast pork in sauce; instead they give you hoisin sauce on the side.

This is my second visit to this great little restaurant. The food is excellent and the get large portions. I love the big variety they offer and the authenticity of the food. I’ve always heard that when Chinese people eat at a Chinese restaurant it’s authentic, so I’m a believer. One day I will try the intestines with mixed vegetables. Every dish they bring out looks delicious.

I am purely rating this on the congee and the Chinese fried bread. I had the pork with century egg and was delicious! Creamy texture and about a quart for around $ 5! I had to buy the fish slice congee to take away & had the next day. Wasn’t disappointed! Very happy! My friend had the roast duck & was very tasty! A hit for us!

After a rough night in NYC, I was looking for some comfort food to wake me up! I came in here and got an order of their roast pork and bbq pork. It came with a serving of rice. It was solid stuff and at a very reasonable price. The place is not upscale but very authentic.

Don’t eat here. The meat is bad, borderline spoiled. Their solution is just to offer chilli oil to mask the smell.

I come by sometimes to pick up breakfast since it is right next to the subway station. Congee is very good and affordable. Squid and sliced fish balls with peanuts, pork and scallions is so good! So savory. With the fried dough(Chinese donut), the congee tasted even better. Both items compliment each other very well. The cashier is very nice. About a 5min wait for them to prepare the congee.

HELLZTOTHEYEAH I ordered take out and when I brought it back home(maybe 30 min), I opened that plastic container and the steam was letting out. I was like DAMN!!! Majority of the stuff is pretty fresh. I actually brought like a group of 16 friends one day to do a quick dinner, it was not only affordable but hearty. Everyone was full. Bathrooms are ok, not 5-stars but manageable. Service was ok but for the price of dinner, I’m not going to expect a butler, ok. So if they happen to be short with you, don’t feel offended. I guess it’s also the nature of these types of restaurants, since they’re located in a busy location and wants to turn over tables faster. Even if you are like the only person in the entire restaurant, haha. It’s just routine I suppose. The last time I felt rushed out of the restaurant was Grimaldi’s because there is like a line outside a mile long HAHA. Lunchtime gets so pack, need to share a table. So it is best to do an early dinner or early lunch. Or better yet, take out. I recommend duck for duck ppl. Roast pork is ok. but for ppl who like BBQ, the pork skin is crazy crispy, so order the BBQPORK. The noodles are also yummy because they make it on the spot so there is no lag time or wait time. Otherwise, I’ve had the chicken, which is made fresh everyday. They include bones so if you dont know how to eat a chicken, you should just order like the simple beef and broccolli, haha. As for the fresh chicken you see hanging there, I actually had to order a huge meal for a party and I got it really early because they had it made in the morning and I wanted to catch the first batch. It was super fresh like straight from the farms. AMAZING!

2 star for this place. I was hungry while I was going to grocery in China town and wanted to try a new place to eat. I ordered roast duck and porridge which is I assumed will be small size $ 1 but came to my table as a big bowl. I felt like who can eat all of that bowl? My duck was so oily and rarely find meet, a lot of skin and thick fat compared with other place in China town roasted duck here is not that good to touch my point. Porridge was just porridge not that amazing. Staff was average but when they drop the check which wrote down in Chinese and put total price over what I ordered. So I ask the server what happened and said that I know what I ordered is was not that price, I asked him that already put tip right and he said yes. I felt that a little tricky with out notice me. I always tip 18−20%Anyway. I don’t mind to eat cheap or expensive. The main thing just hate when ppl tricky !

It gets four stars for the food, minus one for an awkward incident of a waitress confronting customers for allegedly not tipping. The vegetable with oyster sauce is a good, simple counterpoint to heavy meat you’re likely to be consuming, although it was too salty, which is something you won’t usually hear me say. The three precious ingredients on rice was an inexpensive knockout — with roast pork, chicken, a fried egg and a tiny of cabbage providing explosive flavor to the large pile of rice. The menu is quite lengthy so this is the kind of place where further research is beneficial.

It’s my go to place for the Chinese Roasted meats that you see in the window. barbecued roast pork, roasted pig, soy sauce chicken oh my. I have yet to try their duck. I love duck. Make sure you specify which cut of meat you want i.e.some people love the fatty roast pork meat but I like the lean. Just say no fat when you order roast pork, the cashier should understand. Same for me for the roast pig meat. I want the lean meat. The soy sauce chicken I like the breast meat because it’s easier to eat with less bones. I don’t usually like breast meat but their’s is okay so as long the bones is less. The wontons are good. There is pork and shrimp in it. I can’t eat shellfish but their wontons beat the pants off every American Chinese takeout place. I can’t believe those American Chinese places call their concoction, wontons. That is not a wonton! I order all the time the soup noodles with roasted meats. It’s cheap in here. And it’s right next to the train on Canal. Location is really important to me. This is not something to go out of the way for. But if you live nearby and you are looking for this type of food, it’s decent. I am not crazy about all the dishes I got from the downstairs kitchen. I much prefer the stuff from the front kitchen by the window.

If you are Cantonese in NYC then you already know the number of restaurants serving decent Cantonese dishes is shrinking fast. New Hon Wong is one of these restaurants trying to stay afloat. You can still come for a good bowl of congee and Cantonese rice dishes. I find the best deals here is the wonton soups and BBQ meats. Especially good is the soy sauce chicken, the roasted pork and roasted pig(if you go at the end of the day there is very little left). Their rice dishes are just OK; starts from $ 4.75 — $ 6.50. Three Precious Ingredients on Rice $ 5.75(soy sauce chicken, roasted pork and fried egg over rice); Rated 4⁄5. Tomato with beef over rice $ 4.75– OK. Tomato not cooked enough, sauce is thin or need seasoning; beef skimpy. Rated 2⁄5. Roasted pork/pig– $ 8/lb– very good. Rated 4⁄5. Tip: This restaurant is located on a very crowd block & dirty part of Chinatown; also watch your bags on the street.

I’m in congee heaven. When trying to decide where to get my congee fix in Chinatown, I stumbled on a post from Serious Eats( ). It broke down a handful of restaurants serving congee based on texture and flavor. My research definitely paid off. Five stars for the congee! Perfect consistency and flavor and the price is right at $ 4 a bowl. Complimentary hot tea served in tall glasses-so weird. My sister and I were so impressed by the congee that we stopped by a couple days later to pick up a to go order to bring back to our hotel!
