New Asia

We ordered a combination plate and large soup on seamless and an hour and 15 minutes later still had not received our food even though it was only supposed to take 35 – 40 minutes. When I called the restaurant to see where our food was they were useless and had no clue what our order was and once they finally figured it out they said it was coming and hung up. Well it’s still not here, I’m still hungry and I’m not definitely not ordering from them again.

My best advice is to stay away — I ordered from here before I checked the reviews. I should say that for the price I wasn’t expecting much but I did expect to be able to eat my meal. I had the ribs in black bean sauce which wasn’t anything close to what I’m used to. Usually it’s steamed rib tips and a black bean sauce. This was bbq rib tips with some black beans thrown in WTF?!!
The fried chicken wings are mostly salt, the wonton soup was hot water and the fried rice was hard. There was nothing redeemable about this meal except that I was only out $ 15. Excuse me… I need to find something to eat.

I’ve been looking for a new go to Chinese place. Sadly this is definitely not it. Food is inexpensive (portions are small) and came quickly, and that’s the best thing I have to say about this place. I wonder how this place could have any stars (maybe I ordered on an off-​night, it was a Tuesday and also a Holiday). The menu that came with the order was from Young Chow (there are coupons on the menu so if you are a glutton for punishment and want to try this place, get the menu and order direct for free items) so why two names for one place? Maybe they are trying to hide their bad health grade or poor reviews?.
Chicken Skewers were fried (usually they are baked/​roasted) and mostly black on the outside, all dark-​meat chicken and the fat was still on it. General Tso’s Chicken (which I picked as 14 people had liked it) was in some type of thick, sweet and sour sauce, and had a funny, chemically taste. Both chicken and mixed vegetables (a simple go to dish for my teens… they said it was the worst they ever had) and chicken in black bean looked good, but just tasted odd. Fried Dumplings also a little odd tasting. The fried rice was the only normal tasting item we got, but it was of the yellow-​rice variety which is always a red flag to me.
All in all this was probably the single worst Chinese meal I have ever ordered, in my life, and I grew up in the Upper West Side. I go to Mott St. and Chinatown… I like to think I know good Chinese food and this was far, far, far, so so far from it.

Meh. All Chinese food places are somewhat the same. On their menu you can find similar items and you expect to see the regular choices such as sesame chicken, kung pao chicken, general tso, etc. It’s an unsaid expectation that the go to dishes to choose from in every Chinese restaurant should therefore stand out from all the other competitors, but I would have to say at New Asia, it did not. Maybe it was just what I ordered or it was an off day. I don’t think this place is anything special.

Quick, friendly service with good basic food at a beyond reasonable price. Keep it simple and you will not be disappointed. We had a selection of noodles and dumplings for almost half of what it would cost elsewhere. Large portions. Quite satisfied. Will return.

New Asia is actually the same as Young Chow Garden, which has a 1.5 rating on Unilocal.Not sure why they keep changing their name, but they were having some health department issues not so long ago, so that might have something to do with it.
Since it’s the same restaurant, here’s my review for Young Chow, which obviously applies:
This is a terrible, terrible restaurant. It’s an inexpensive hole-​in-​the-​wall kind of place, but it doesn’t even live up to those low expectations.
It appears that most of the food they serve for delivery has been sitting in their buffet for quite a while. Tough chicken, dry rice and thick (and pretty disgusting) sauce. General Tso’s, which is normally pretty good regardless of the restaurant, is bad here. As others have said, the meat they use tends to be the «odd bits» that contain bones or ligaments or whatever.
Delivery guy is a total nightmare. I tip well, but he was very rude and just looked dirty. Anyone who lives around the restaurant has seen him speeding up and down the sidewalk on his electric bike, yelling at pedestrians — he’s no more pleasant in person.
There are dozens of cheap Chinese places in the neighborhood — this might be the worst.

Whenever I need a delivery New Asia is quick, friendly and the food is good. If I drop into the resturant to pick my food up the place is always clean, never crowded and looks brand new. I recommend New Asia to my neighbor’s all the time.

i dont eat chinese take out anymore, the quality of the food is just too. damn. consistently. shytty. but then evar once n a while i pass one that’s frying chicken that just smells omg gud, so i stop, get a menu, and try ordering something low fat/​steamed/​with brown rice, usually later on and for delivery. and it always, always, always winds up failing. i had one place going pretty gud for a while, trained just right, steamed chicken and mixed vegetabels, brown rice, spring rolls. the guy was super polite, knew my order down cold, had it to me hot and steaming in twenty minutes, no worries. so what happened?
one friday night i call up and someone else answers the phone. no biggie, a young girl answered once or twice before, i figure, so what, so i have to repeat my order, whatever. half hour later, i get my food. cold. rice is hard, like its been sitting since yesterday or scraped from the bottom of the pot. the vegetables were hard, thick, awkward, unseasoned pieces. hardly any chicken, and what was there was also bland, tasteless, cooked poorly and at too low of a temperature to lock juicy flavor on the inside. it sucked. then i look at the menu. wait a minute… this is not the place i usually order from…
turns out my place went out of business, and this nasty place from up the block took over from my delivery. never again. having nearly vomited the one time i tried KAM LAI. now i remembered why. and had yet another reason to avoid it like the plague. so i call back. and am like, yo, you could have told me you were serving food from one restaurant, claiming it was another. this food sucks, i want my money back. and they were like, uhhhhh… we dont do refunds? whatever. tell you one thing i will NEVER eat at that place again. and at every opportunity, KAM LAI will feel my wrath on Unilocal lol
but i digress. problem with new asia was they kinda deceived me. served my go to great when i picked it up as a customer. feigned poor english and sent it in super small, undersized packaging at a higher price when i ordered take out. basic. bait and switch. not cool. and not much of a reason to go back and try again…

We’ve been ordering from this place in all its incarnations for a number of years. It’s not like going to Chinatown but it’s good takeout food. The Sesame Chicken, Beef with Scallion, and Orange Chicken are pretty good. The Wonton Soup is OK and better than most takeout places. The dumplings are pretty good. They include cans of soda, depending on how much you spend. I wouldn’t order the pan fried noodles again. If you need Chinese takeout on the uws, this is your place.

Egg rolls are the perfect food. A little pork. A lot of vegetables. Deep fried.
All the best things in one little, inexpensive package.
New Asia is your standard Chinese food spot, serving the standard Chinese food fare. They have a buffet, but I never catch it. It’s too early in the day for night owls like me.
I only had one problem here with some project kids once. But as I keep finding out, Amsterdam Ave. is Mini-​Brownsville. I’m just glad I don’t have to order thru bullet proof Plexigalss anymore.
The staff is friendly and quick. I can’t comment on delivery, since I always pick-​up. I live around the corner. It would be supreme laziness to order delivery. Don’t think I haven’t thought about it though.

For cheap Chinese, this is my new favourite UWS haunt. The inside is clean and new, the service is fast and polite, and the food was really flavourful. I ordered the veggie lo mein and a shrimp egg roll, which were great. So often I get cheap lo mein and end up adding a ton of duck sauce to get the right flavour, but theirs is just the right balance of sweet, savory, and salty. And it was provided in a cardboard container in lieu of the dreaded Styrofoam.

This place is my new go to for Chinese on the UWS (and that’s saying a lot). I wasn’t sure about trying my luck at this place put it really paid off! I ordered the Singapore noodles, extra spicy, and they came out wonderful. Most places disappoint me with their noodles, but this place was on point. :)

I dont expect supreme food here for the low prices that they have. But I do wish they knew how to serve customers. They are inconsistent if the menu, if they knew their menu. Because no one there knows clear Engilsh, they screw up my orders!!!
