Moo Shu Grill

Had the 5 spice pork with fried egg rice. The pork was very tasty, though a few pieces has too much fat. The rice though left a little to be desired. It was kinda mushy with not much flavor but the pork made up for it.

I had the rice bowl with chicken.
The chicken was moist, but they clearly went overboard on the soy sauce marinade. It was very salty, which made it difficult to enjoy. The veggies on the side were just meh — they were really flavorless and odd to me. Sprouts, celery, carrot… all cold too. It made the whole dish oddly lukewarm when mixed together. Just not my cup of tea. I didn’t enjoy the white rice base to the dish either.
I like to try new things, but all the food here was so out of my element. Pretty much the whole experience was a miss for me.
The employees working the truck were very kind and seemed on top of their game. The food just wasn’t for me.

First off, ridiculous name. An Asian food truck that abbreviates their name as «MSG»? Somebody’s got a sense of humor. One day where I didn’t have a sense of what to get for lunch I saw these guys and gave it a shot. I only wanted something small, and the gentleman running the truck was nice enough to sell me just 1 moo shu. I opted for the Taiwanese Basil Chicken as per his suggestion. The food was packaged quickly and I was on my way.
This was the perfect portion of food that I needed. The chicken was alright but I expected it to be more flavorful. I really just got a bit of salt from the soy sauce from it. The basil was barely discernible. Veggies were good as was the meat quality. Given how nice these guys were and how good the value is I’d still try them again if they make it back up to the Random House building. Problem is I haven’t seen them for a month or so. Oh well.

They were out of tofu & other items, so I decided to order 2 moo shoos instead of 3. They didn’t tell me it would be $ 8 and only $ 1 for a third. The food was good but overpriced. Due to running out of items & cost issue, I don’t plan to return.

MSG really hit the spot. I asked for a recommendation for a rice bowl since I was stuck between the chicken or pork. The pork was recommended and it was good. It had a good balance of sauce, rice, meat as well as veggies. My kind of food. I ate the entire thing.
My colleague tried the moo shu. She’s watching her salt intake and the first thing she said was, «wow this is so salty.» I was kind of like duh this is Chinese food. What do you expect. Three moo shu seemed to be too much. I think two per order would be sufficient.

Walked out of the office for a quick bite and was immediately drawn to the MSG food truck (I’m a sucker for silly puns)
Ordered 3 moo shus for $ 9. Got 5 spice pork, tofu and pork belly.
5 spice pork is probably my favorite (SO flavorful) but because I thought I’d save the best for last, I was actually too full to get to it before it get wet and soggy. Still wonderful flavor though!
Tofu was as expected. I ordered it really to offset the fatty pork belly, but the overall flavor was a little more on the bland side
Pork belly was really good, nice combo of fat and meat.
Saw someone order 2 for $ 6 (obviously, they are regulars) and really think that might be the way to go. 2 is just right and 3 is a little much.
Also, each roll will start dripping. Ask for extra napkins or head back to the office!

Fillings:
+ Chicken was delicious
— Tofu was *horrible.* Felt like two big slabs that were un-​seasoned, and so lightly cooked it felt like it was straight out of a container.
+ Sauce/​dressing: very tasty, and unique take on moo shoo seasoning.
Presentation:
+ Amount of food is a great value
— Wish the three of these wraps hadn’t fallen apart so easily. i would’ve preferred smaller ones that stayed together, or maybe a toothpick to support
— Dressing/​sauce was delish, but also leaked everywhere as they fell apart, making everything soggy and pretty hard to consume without getting all over. :(
+ Cart/​staff: appeared neat and very fast.

It was down in south street seaport and I had seen it a few times and decided to give it a world.
You can order 2 ways. MooShu (which is like a wrap) or in a rice bowl.
I got the MooShu, you get 3 wraps and you can choose from 5 proteins (pork, beef, chicken, tofu, and pork belly). I got the basil chicken, 5 spice pork and the xoxo beef.
The pork belly was sold out so I’m guessing it a favorite. The chicken was really good. I also enjoyed the xoxo beef it was my favorite of the two. I didn’t get into my pork I was so full. The wraps are pretty generous for $ 9 for all 3 wraps!
I will defiantly be going back!

Today I tried the Moo Shu Grill Truck located in the Financial District for the first time. After reading several reviews I decided to order the Taiwanese Basil Chicken with the jasmine rice and it was just ok. My chicken was completely covered in the sauce which was just too overwhelming. Not sure if I would order again.

We found one of the food trucks in the #seechange seaport in fidi.
3 wraps for $ 9 and they were great. Plenty of meat and well seasoned. Plus I enjoyed the packets of siracha to complement the flavors. Thanks guys for the quick bite.

The Moo Shu Grill Truck is currently located in the Financial District. I was walking by and I decided to give it a shot. I ordered the 5 spice pork and the steak in a wrap. In regards to the meat the steak was great but I personally was not a fan of the 5 spiced pork. They loaded it up with tons of carrots which tasted good but it was way too much. Although this is a food truck you will need to find somewhere to sit because this will get messy! Overall I recommend, it was something different and pretty good!

Tried the MSG today for the first time after seeing it parked in the neighborhood. I got my food within a few minutes after the lunch rush around 2:30. Really enjoyed the XOXO beef with sticky rice. The beef was mostly tender with a few chewy fatty pieces but overall very good. The pickled vegetable were a perfect side dish. I would totally eat the carrots on their own. The guy working the truck was friendly and welcoming. Will be recommending the truck to coworkers and friends.

This place is awesome. Best food truck on the 45^th n 6^th corridor. I got the Pork Belly, Beef XO, Duck, and 5 spice Pork. They were all very good and priced well at 3 for $ 9. Check this place out!

I tried MSG for the first time a few weeks ago. I’m a vegetarian, and they were super helpful in pointing out what was and wasn’t vegetarian. I ordered the tofu moo shu wraps, but they were unfortunately out of tofu, so I asked for it with just veggies instead. The cashier was extremely nice and apologetic about it.
The moo shu itself was delicious. I look forward to trying it with the tofu, but the vegetables alone were fresh and crispy, and I could’ve eaten the sauce alone and been happy. I will certainly be returning soon.

I’m a bit surprised to see the overwhelmingly positive reviews for Moo Shu Grill (or, MSG for short, which is ironic for a food truck specializing in a Chinese dish), as my experience was just ok.
As the food truck scene has exploded in recent years, you can’t just get away with a decent plate of chicken and rice or an above-​average selection of condiments at a hot dog stand, and naturally, expectations for food truck offerings have been raised significantly. I had forgotten lunch at home and went out in search of a food truck near the office with no particular craving or cuisine in mind, when I stumbled upon Moo Shu Grill. Having worked at a Chinese restaurant for four years to earn some extra cash in high school, I developed a fondness for the Americanized Chinese version of moo shu, so seeing a truck dedicated solely to the dish had me immediately sold. I ordered the trio of moo shus (moo shi? what is the plural of moo shu anyway?) and headed back to the office.
The first disappointment struck when I noticed my order had either been misheard or filled incorrectly. Rather than getting one of the five-​spice pork, XOXO beef, and Thai basil chicken, I ended up with two beef and one pork; not the end of the world, but variety is the spice of life and I like to try as many things as I can.
The second disappointment was the way in which each moo shu fell apart a bit; while they definitely get points for portion size (by the end of my third, I was stuffed), it also leads to a challenge in finishing one before it falls apart on you. Obviously a dish that is meant to be eaten with your hands will have some messiness to it, but there’s a difference between a small piece of meat falling out and the entire thing falling apart on you. Perhaps they could take a play from other places that specialize in wrap-​style cuisines, like burritos or Kati Roll, and prepare the moo shu in a paper wrapper or something similar.
The final, and most important, disappointment was the flavor of each moo shu themselves. I will start out with the positive; I really like the flavors added by the Cambodian/​Vietnamese-​influenced elements, such as the cilantro, shredded carrots and cucumbers, and ginger scallion aioli. That being said, those ingredients cannot offset the fact that the meat in each moo shu was a bit under-​seasoned and bland. Additionally, the ingredients and flavors were not well-​balanced throughout each bite — there were some bites where it was all meat and no fixings and other bites were the opposite occurred.
As much as I want to love Moo Shu Grill, it’s hard to imagine going back. Given the extremely competitive nature of the food truck scene where one particular dish is often the exclusive focus of each truck, there is little room for error when it comes to winning over customers. Unfortunately for Moo Shu Grill, it didn’t differentiate itself enough for me and there are still so many trucks in the NYC area to try!

I tried MSG for the first time on January 16^th when it was stationed on 45^th & 6^th avenue. Needless to say that I went back on the 17^th when it was stationed on 50^th street and 6^th avenue in say…25 — 30 degree weather. Need I say more?
All of the Moo Shu’s I tried were excellent. Much better than my previous Moo Shu experiences in the regular Americanized Chinese restaurants. Those were good, these are excellent. It’s like a cross between Chinese and Cambodian in the flavor. Especially with the pickled veggies.
I asked for a recommendation and they suggested the basil chicken, the five spiced pork and the Peking duck. Loved it, loved it, loved it. I raved about it so much and gobbled it up so fast, two co-​workers went with me the next day and wanted the exact same thing I’d had the day before. You would think I’d try something different, but nope, I wanted the same thing again. It was still amazing.
I’m considering trying the rice bowl, but I’m not too big on rice and I’m more of the if it’s not broke, why fix it type of girl. Hmmm… maybe if they offer a salad bowl then I’ll venture from the three delicious moo shu’s I enjoyed. Until then… the 3 Moo Shu Combo it is!

Wow, MSG. I’m so pleasantly surprised by you.
Stopped by for the first time a few days ago. Despite being a new customer and not having ever shown them love up until that point, they honored a deal they had going — two entrees for the price of one on days ending with 8 (Jan 8, 18, 28^th). They were saying thank you to New Yorkers for all the support they’d gotten in past months — so sweet! I got the moo shu wraps for one entrée with one pork, one beef, and one chicken, and the rice bowl with chicken for my second entrée.
The moo shus were divine. Lots of vegetables — hugely important — which were pickled so TONS of flavor. The meat was tender and the sauces had a slight kick, which shot up the deliciousness. Two days later, I’m eating the rice bowl for lunch, and I’m so pleasantly surprised. Two days in a fridge and it’s still delicious? I can only imagine it must have been fresh. I was so surprised, in fact, that I was prompted to write this. Credit must be given when food is so good that it still tastes awesome two days later.
Along with all this fantastic food, I got a friendly, warm, welcoming greeting. I’m devoted now — will be stopping by anytime I see them outside my office. You should too. These people are doing good things.

So simple yet so mind-​blowing. I tried the Taiwanese basil chicken wrap, my coworker had a different type, and we couldn’t stop saying how amazing it was. I’m always looking for something that is filling but tastes fresh, healthy, and delicious. This is it.

With 2 options as a vegetarian (none of which were too cheap), went with the tofu mooshu on a chilly afternoon in SoHo for $ 4 after PayPal kicked in $ 5. Thoroughly enjoyed this respectable portion of fresh food, so can see how people justify the cost.

I give props to the Taiwanese basil chicken moo shu: delicious chunks of chicken accented by the sweetness of hoisin sauce, the cool spiciness of ginger scallion mayo, and the crunch of cucumber, carrots and cilantro. All of this fierceness, wrapped in a moo shu pancake, yielded about three to four satisfying bites. There was a bit of a line and moo shus were made to order but service was fast and friendly.
I’ll be on the lookout for their return to the Financial District (yes, I’m still spelling it out).
