Monty Python’s Spamalot

True to the Monty Python spirit. Spamalot… was funny and irreverent.

Really funny show, well performed, but. pretty much exactly like the movie. I thought it would be its own version or have its own twists but you are basically seeing a live performance of the movie.
You’d enjoy it if you were 1) an obsessive Monty Python fan or 2) if you haven’t seen Monty Python and like British humor.

Revenge of the Holy Grail.
I saw this show some time back and didn’t realize I could Unilocal it… We had some decent seats here and the show was fine — if unremarkable. Honestly, if you’ve seen Monty Python’s Holy Grail, then you’ve seen Spamalot.
When it was all said and done, it was funny — so long as you were a fan of the original movie. Would I go again? Doubtful — once was enough.

I saw this years ago without Clay Aiken and loved it! It had my husband and I in stitches through and through.

My first Broadway show ever — not dissapointed at all.
I know most people would’ve gone to see a classic but this was really funny. Not a boring moment. Clay Aiken was, to my surprise, really good in it.

The show was great. It was consistently entertaining and not a complete copy of the movie so fans of Monty Python and the Holy Grail will enjoy it.
The music was catchy and will be stuck in my head for a couple of days. As my friend stated before I went it was ¾ Monty Python with ¼ Mel Brooks. You can’t go wrong with that. Try to avoid Left Mezzanine seating though. You miss a lot of the side of the stage and there were a couple of scenes that felt incomplete because you didn’t have a clear view of the entire stage. Mezzanine however was decent seating in general.

Good fun entertainment. I caught this years ago so it was sans Clay Aiken. However, this was definitely a laugh-​a-​lot show for me. Had a good time.

Surprisingly Clay Aiken is one of the highlights of the currently configured cast of Spamalot, as he shows a pretty good comic sense as Sir Robin and as a castle guard. Unfortunately, most of the first act of this Monty Python rehash is pretty flat. I was particularly annoyed (as was King Arthur I’m sure) by the scene with the taunting French soldier. The tastelessness seemed to be ratcheted up a notch from the original sketch along with the physical comedy, but the insults were delivered by rote and without sincerity.
The «look at us we’re on Broadway» jokes that make fun of the formula of Broadway musicals have become so formulaic themselves as of late that they are as tiresome and subtle as a wink from Sarah Palin. Unfortunately such dumb jokes are featured here in spades. Is Sarah any relation to Michael?
Though the second act was no more subtle than the first, it certainly was funnier. I might have laughed once in the first act, but laughed heartily quite a few times in the second. Finally the script and its direction took the opportunity to use the pizzazz of Broadway to elevate the material a bit. The actors also seemed to respond with a bit more zest. Unfortunately, I bet if I went to youtube and took another look at Cleese and company I would laugh harder and longer at the very same jokes.

I’m not a big Monty Python fan, but Spamalot was still pretty entertaining. My mom is a big Month Python fan, and she had a great time, so it probably depends on your level of fan-​ness :)

Ok, I’m not one for dry British humor, but I actually thought Spamalot was really entertaining.
Plus, I had never seen or heard of the TV version beforehand.
What can I say… Yes, it’s British humor, which means dry and sometimes not obvious. Yes, it would probably be MUCH more entertaining if you were actually familiar with the television show.
But nevertheless, it has some hilarious parts and King Arthur is so believable, you can’t deny him. The Lady of the Lakes is off the chain funny too.
I agree that I wouldn’t spend a ton of money, but just buy the cheap seats the day of at half price. Trust me, it’s worth it.

Clay Aiken was horrible but I have to give it up to the rest of the cast.
The play starts out a bit slow but the laughter picks up in Act II.
It may be hard to understand the jokes if you are a bit slow…
Then you are better off watching Avenue Q.
The lead female actress can sing! I wouldn’t be surprise if she lands a record deal.

I must have gone into the theater expecting too much because I absolutely LOVE the movie Monty Python’s Quest for the Holy Grail (I used to have trading cards for the movie and everything — very embarrassing to admit, but there it is.)
But the Broadway Show was a long, sour experience for me. It was like watching a live, low-​budget version of the movie. A few new scenes were added to the Broadway show, but they were all disappointing.
The only thing I can say about this show is that it’s great for unintelligent men and frat boys who have little appreciation for real theater. Sorry.
If you’re smart, you’ll stay at home to watch the movie and save your money for a real Broadway show — like Young Frankenstein, Wicked, Chicago, etc.
