You have to be realistic when ordering or coming to this place: it’s midtown. All it’s meant for is hungry office crowd. Interior is regular nothing crazy. Portions are large and fresh. Nothing fancy or intricate. But that’s what I expect from a place like this. Impossible to have lunch at 1 or 2pm. Gets super busy and you would have to wait for your order for about 30min. Come in before 1 or after 3 and your order will be on your table in 10 min max. Service is great. Fast and that’s what I need during my lunch breaks. Four stars. Solid.

Had takeout from this place. Rolls were standard, nothing to talk about – making this a disappointing meal given the prices of this place. I filled myself up on the meh-tasting rolls. Then… I ate my salmon sashimi and spat it out. It was bitter and chewy. It made me remember why I was always afraid to eat sashimi and never liked the taste. Not fresh fish here… bad quality. Unless you’re having cooked sushi things here, avoid this place.

So I walk by this place all the time, but usually I have somewhere to go so I haven’t had time to go inside. One time I was passing by this place with my husband, and I asked him, «Why would anyone name their place Monster Sushi?» Better than calling it Toros at least. He told me it actually sounded very good right now, and I had a sashimi craving so I pulled him right in and decided to sit down at the sushi bar. The fish that day looked amazing and fresh. The entire staff was very attentive and everyone was able to answer our questions, as well as give us a recommendation. Okay, about the food. We ordered the sashimi deluxe: 18 pieces for $ 27 for dinner, comes with miso soup or salad and a bowl of rice. It was delicious! I substituted the tuna for salmon, as always because I don’t like tuna(the kind with red/dark meat). They were very sizable, well-cut pieces, and beautifully displayed pieces of salmon, yellowtail, halibut, mackerel, and albacore. I was delighted to see albacore on my sashimi deluxe plate. It was buttery and melted entirely. With a bit of wasabi, it was absolute ambrosia. They brought us some hot tea when we sat down without us even asking for it. How sweet! The tea was fragrant, and brewed well, definitely not from tea bags. I ordered a teriyaki chicken & tofu dinner bento with miso soup to go. The chicken was of quality cut and had a perfect ratio of white and dark meat. They used medium firm tofu with tempura, so it was spongey and absorbed the sauce. It was awesome. The dinner came with small sides of cooked bean sprouts, carrot, and broccoli, which added the perfect touch to the meal. Their teriyaki sauce(came on the side) wasn’t too pungent or salty, which is great to put over the rice. The chicken and tofu were already flavorful, so I didn’t even need sauce for it!

Great little sushi place. I came here Saturday nite for dinner, and it was pretty quite because it’s off away from the busy area during the weekends. However, the food was still really good. The fish was fresh with decent portion sizes. They even gave us fried green tea ice cream at the end!

Sometimes I want to do the fun, pseudo-sushi stuff, and Monster Sushi delivered in this respect. It’s the other extreme of Sushi Yasuda — a very pedestrian place with messy sushi and inauthentic fare. Run by Chinese people with pretty decent service, Monster Sushi is a great place for out of towners and NYers with little to no knowledge about sushi. The food goes down easily, drenched in sauces and other pretty distractions. I can definitely see why this place is attractive. Now I have to book a reservation at Yasuda so that I can forget all about this place.

Just wasn’t a fan of the sushi and as a result I didn’t even eat everything I had ordered(my apologies to the fish who gave their life for my meal). I ordered a roll with brown rice and the pieces kept falling apart when I was trying to pick them up, and the four pieces of individual sushi weren’t very good. For example, the tamago(egg) was very rubbery so I took one bite and left the rest on the plate. I ate with two friends and they thought their food was pretty good, but I’ve had much better sushi elsewhere for the same price. Can’t win them all.

I can speak knowledgeably regarding the sashimi, it’s all I’ll eat here. I sit at the sushi bar. It’s a good, solid plate of pretty fresh thick cut fish. Given my druthers, I like it thin cut, but still, it’s tasty… Not the best I’ve had, by far, but please… For $ 25, it’s a solid value, you’ll walk away stuffed. Not fancy, but perfect when ya have the yen for a cheap, solid sushi lunch in midtown
