I’ve been taking Masala Bhangra classes for years, starting when I was a member of Crunch and learning from Sarina and Earla, and then from Mickela at New York Health & Racquet. I have taken this class nearly everywhere it’s offered in NYC — 92Y, Alvin Ailey, and now New York Sports Clubs. Disclaimer: it’s not easy. I think I lasted a half hour in my first class. But it’s low pressure, and a lot of people don’t know the moves so you don’t feel silly. Enough people know the moves so you have someone to follow. The music is great, the energy is high, and the workout is intense and fun. How can your spirits not be lifted when your instructor is telling you to «celebrate»?! My advice is to try it twice. You — and your body — will remember a lot from the first time and it gets easier as you go once you learn the basic moves. After that, it’s all about how you put them together! Balle balle!

I took Sarina Jain’s Masala Bhangra workout for the first time at a lower east side Crunch gym in NYC. My friend had been before and convinced me to go, claiming she was«addicted» to this workout. «It burns overs 500 calories a session,» she tells me. When we get to the class, I was surprised by how many people knew about Masala Bhangra and seemed so excited for the workout to start. Although the class was packed, I had plenty of personal space to move around. I usually struggle with getting motivated to go to the gym, but really enjoy classes that get me moving. Sarina Jain’s Masala Bhangra class was SO much fun — I don’t think I’ve ever had that much fun sweating before. I highly recommend you try this class! For those of you that don’t live in NYC, Sarina has Masala Bhangra instructors all across the east coast and even in California and Illinois.
