Masa y agave is an off shoot of my favorite rosa Mexicano. The food they offer is more or less the same stuff they offer in their other locations, same goes for the drinks except the bartenders I think are a bit less skilled. The location is definitely more cozy but it’s not as fun and spirited. Also someone karate chopped the sink in the women’s bathroom there. Basically walked into a bathroom with a cracked marble slab and the sink hanging out of the wall.

I visited Masa y Agave around 5pm for happy hour drinks and a light dinner. Overall, my experience was very poor. The service provided by the bar staff was extremely disappointing. Upon arriving, we ordered chips and guacamole, and a pitcher of margaritas. Approximately 10 minutes later, a bowl of chips arrived at our table – no salsa, no guac, just chips. Five more minutes pass, and then we were provided with two bottles of salsa, but nothing to pour the salsa into. At this time, we asked when we should expect our guacamole, and were assured that it was on its way. Note that we had still not received our pitcher of margaritas, and so far, 15 minutes have elapsed since initially ordering. Another ten minutes roll by, and finally we went back to the bar to check in on our margaritas and guacamole. It was clear that neither had been prepared, as the bartender went to work pouring our pitcher of margaritas. Another five minutes later, and the pitcher was delivered to the table, along with three glasses. Still no guacamole. We asked again, and the staff member acted as if we had never ordered it in the first place. Ten minutes later, we finally had guacamole, but had run out of chips. We then had to actively chase down more chips, to go with the guac that had taken, in total, 40 minutes after our initial order. To top all of this off, when we went to settle our tab at the end of the night, we had been charged for TWO orders of guac(despite our struggle to receive just ONE), and three additional drinks that nobody at our table had consumed. As someone who has frequented Rosa Mexicano locations around NYC, and was very excited when Rosa and Masa y Agave moved in on Murray Street, I can tell you that, after my experience, I will struggle to convince myself to return. P. S. It’s also worth nothing that our table was told that we would have to order everything that we wanted at the bar. Which was fine, except when additional tables started sitting down around us, they were offered table service by the bartenders.

Masa y Agave is owned by Rosa Mexicano and appears to be their attempt at creating a bar/lounge with a speakeasy vibe. Masa y Agave is downstairs below Rosa Mexicano and while it’s worth trying, one warning: pricey. Four small cocktails and two small plates cost approximately $ 100. Cocktails were around $ 15 each and they are small — four or five sips each. Cocktails and food were good, although the cocktails weren’t creative enough for the high prices being charged. The service was great, attentive, and the staff knows the menus(drinks & food) well. Had a good overall experience and would recommend trying Masa y Agave although I wouldn’t personally return. There are many other dark lounges and true speakeasies that offer a much more creative cocktail menu and experience for the same price. Borderline 2⁄3 stars. Overall good but not great. Great service. Too expensive. Cozy vibe. Could be a good date spot. Recommend trying. Don’t recommend returning. *Photos are from Google images.
