Some restaurants stand the test of time and stay true to their mission, despite passing fads. My first meal at Les Sans Culottes was perhaps thirty years ago, also with the signature sausage, pâté, crudité. I assumed we’d eat here last week, but when I saw the familiar blue sign peeping out above construction(or is it destruction?) I realized the end of an era. If the owners of Les Sans Culottes happen to glance at Unilocal, thank you for many years of wonderful cuisine and affordable prices.(My husband still talks about your fabulous mussels, which set the bar for him.) Les Sans Culottes, you will be missed!

Love, love, love! The food is amazing! I try to make it a point to come here at least once a month. The sausage/fruit/vegetable appetizer is unique and delicious. The entrees are fantastic and the flan is a must have. Enjoy!

I can’t believe this place closed!!! This place was sucha fun place to eat. I was fascinated with how the French culture ate — very slow and pleasurable. They gave us all you can eat appetizers which was a bunch of sausage and salami hanging off a cage carrier and then a basket full of fresh veggies!!! I am so sad I really enjoyed eating here when I was living in NYC. Their skirt steak with fritas was also very good and tasty. I was so full by the time I got the main entrée but who cares… indulge, pass time, pass gas, drink wine. C’est la vie.

Good price. Good food. Good service. Very filling. We got the fillet mignon and the steak with pepper corn suave. The never ending sausage and fruit/vegetable basket were fresh and delicious.

I, too, am sad to see this fine place gone, with a friendly woman and her family running it. I guess times change, rents increase, and the restaurant ceased to be profitable. I still recall eating here after the Hurricane Sandy’s Blackout of 2012. I had a warm meal, and could wash my hands. It was so comforting after my downtown apartment had no lights, heat or water. Fare well, my friends.

OMG! IT’S CLOSED! This is where I proposed! This is where we … oh, so many things. One of a kind. No point in staying in New York now.

Exceptional!!! Ridiculous meat tray & fruit/veggie basket as an appetizer for the $ 26 pre fixe menus. In addition to the app you get bread basket with pâté and dipping sauce, butter, & pickles. Delicious food and great petite deserts. Service was nice too. A very intimate place & great for an affordable date. Very much pleased over all!

Can’t rave about this place enough– and yes I’m only giving it 4 stars instead of 5 to keep it a secret(shhh I’m greedy). Best French restaurant in town. The food is decadent but not overwhelming. They have dishes like duck and rabbit(always great choices for French fare). The appetizers are really killer though. Want to keep this review nice and sweet so I don’t give up too much. But definitely check it out if you’re in the area. Absolutely worth your time and money.

Good food. Refined. Unique starters and tasty n fresh! Nice staff. Perfect for a date or a solo dinner to unwind. I would go back just for the tiered sausage, fruit and vege tray — complimentary too! Wowzers! Rare find and surprisingly moderately priced. Try the pre=fixe dinner!!! dE-lish!!!

This has to be one of Manhattan’s best kept secrets. It’s around $ 25 for a pre-fixed meal. Once you sit down, the vegetable and sausage appetizer comes out. This is a basket with fresh whole vegetables in a basket, and it comes with a couple other spreads. Also hanging from the basket are some cured sausages. Your table can work on it until you’re almost full, and then you realize that you have an entrée and dessert after this! I have been here twice, and couldn’t bring myself to order anything except the seafood pasta. It is a generous portion of pasta with an even more generous portion of seafood. It came with mussels, clams, shrimp, and scallops. You’re pretty much done halfway through the plate, but you push yourself through because it is so good. My brother ordered the Chicken Cordon Bleu, and it looked pretty good. He said the meat was very juicy. I’m sure that the other plates are good as well, but it is hard to find a good seafood pasta at this price point. To finish it off, they bring you out a small cup of chocolate mousse(or choice of one other dessert), and it is a good cap to your meal. For around $ 25, this place is a great value. Although the décor is a bit odd, the food and service makes you forget about such minor details. I’ll definitely be trying to go back every time I’m up in NYC.

Looking for a French restaurant that gives you the most bang out of your buck? Look no further! This place is the one for you! $ 26 for a pre fixe dinner. Who sees that kind of price anymore? Even Restaurant Week is $ 38 for a pre fixe dinner. Right after you are seated, the waiter brings a tower of sausages and a basket of whole vegetables to cure any immediate hunger that you have. The bread is a bit subpar, but still edible. But wait, there’s still two more courses to go. Many places offer a few choices when it comes to a pre fixe menu. Not Les Sans Culottes! There are about 15 choices that range from Coq au Vin to Bœuf Bourguignon. My friend got the Moules Marinières(steamed mussels with parsley and shallots in a white wine sauce): Since the size of the appetizer was enormous, the size of the bowl containing these delicious mussels was quite big as well. Also, the mussels came with rice and fries(love the amount of food you get for such a low price). I loved everything about this dish and would definitely get again. and I got the Bœuf Bourguignon(beef stew served with red wine sauce): as a fan of the movie, Julie & Julia, I just had to get this dish. When I got my plate, I was disappointed with how it looked. It looked nothing like the pictures I’ve seen. The taste was a bit bland. I wouldn’t get it again. As for the desserts, you are given two options: Mousse au chocolat(chocolate mousse) and Créme caramel(flan with caramel sauce). We got both and they were pretty good. Just the right amount of sweetness. Even though the Bœuf Bourguignon was subpar, the mussels were amazing and I loved the appetizers. Since the pre-fixe menu comes with 15 choices for the entrée, I will definitely be back to try the other dishes. P. S. Bottles of wine cost around $ 25-$ 30(very cheap compared to Manhattan’s standards)

This place is sort of bizarre. I don’t know what to make of it. French comfort food in an ultra-kitschy, almost laughably over the top setting. Viva le revolution! The best and most memorable thing about this restaurant is the unique appetizer. The huge rack of sausages, giant basket of fruit and vegetables, plate of bread and pâté and dressing. We enjoyed it all thoroughly. That basket had the best cataloupe I’ve ever tasted. What happens to all this stuff before it comes out to our table and after we’re finished? Don’t want to think about it. You need to curb your cleanliness standards a bit to really savor this. Entrees were pretty good but by no means great. I’ve had the beef bourguignon which was absolutely mediocre. However, the roasted chicken was quite good and I sampled my dining partners’ dishes of trout and linguini, and they were both very solid. There’s just something about this place that feels a little old and musty. It’s not exactly dirty, but it’s the type of restaurant where you’ll likely see dust on the glasses and dirty spots on the silverware. The staff tries, but they don’t do a very good job. Still, not a bad place to go once in a while.

They aren’t kidding about the whole tower of sausage/basket of veggies. The main courses aren’t anything really to write home about but come for the eye-popping starter. Is it sanitary? No, probably not. If you get skeeved by street meat, then this place isn’t for you. The courses get more mediocre as you go. The dessert is totally bleh, so don’t feel like you have to save room and just really go at it with the sausages, pâté, whole veggies, etc.

Interesting sausage plate with the assorted fruits and veggies, good tasting food with a good price point, but nothing memorable. Overall, if you want a good dining experience, this place is worth trying given its«cash only» menu or the full menu option with additional choices. We had the Bœuf Bourguignon(beef stew served with red wine sauce) and the Côtes de Porc(pork chop garnished with capers, tomatoes & gherkins). The Beef Stew was the better of the two dishes. We had the table bottle of cab, which was great for $ 20. Dessert was okay. The Mousse au chocolat(chocolate mousse) was good, but the Créme caramel(flan with caramel sauce) was flat. All in all, this is a good restaurant for a local, but I would pass on it if I was a tourist. There are much better options in NYC, and given the limited amount of time that most people have, you should seek out a memorable experience.

A nice quaint place that’s romantic and cozy, the service was exceptional and the waiter was very personable. Overall, it was a wonderful dining experience. Some disclosures: * When seated, a basket of fruits/vegetables and cured sausages will appear on your table — This is the starters/appetizers. It can be overwhelming at first because there’s so much right in front of you, along with the bread and pâté/dressing. * The portions are grander than expected; do not anticipate leaving with any sense or feeling that resembles hunger(we did some major damage to the sausages and fruit, prior to the entrees too). * Highly recommend the Créme Brûleé for dessert, the best I’ve ever had and the crust topping is done right in front of you. The food was enchanting. Do it. Get yourself there with a core group of friends.

I’ve been here a couple of times already and it never fails to deliver. People expects too much from a restaurant like Les Sans, I mean you are getting what you paid for — a 3-course meal that’s either $ 25, $ 32 or $ 35. If you want real French food that will blow you out of your seat then go to La Grenouille, Daniel, Jean-Georges, etc. for that matter. The night was young and the boyfriend and I were able to make reservations for Valentine’s Day. As usual, the basket of fruits and vegetables were given with a rack of sausages, along that were the bread and pâté. We also had 2 orders of Escargots for appetizers and it was just delicious. Very plump and juicy. For entrée, I had the Filet Mignon in Brown Mushroom Sauce. I asked for medium-rare and it sure came out as medium-rare. The portions are ginormous but with a little wine and some chit-chat the plate of food slowly diminished. For all the times I’ve been here, service, food and atmosphere were pretty consistent. I guess some people either have too high of an expectation or they’re just unlucky.

Sausage HEAVEN! I dont think anyone can finish all the sausages they give you. But for some reason they all tasted very similar. well except for the salami. but there was skinny and fat sausages. and to add to that a big basket full of fruit and vegetables. these were the best carrots ive ever eaten. so crunchy and full of flavor. french carrots rock! and they had celery and tomatoes and cauliflower and lemons and onions and radish and everything else. so that was the appetizer. for entrée i had the steak with peppercorn sauce. it was good. also some chicken which was pretty good as well. the appetizer totally filled us up. for dessert it came wit flan or chocolate mousse. both okay. so décor, this was a very small place. little seats downstairs and a few up stairs along with the bathroom. service was okay. had to grab them to order and to get the bill. overall a not bad experience. lots of food. id come back just for the appetizer itself.

This is definitely one of my favorite French restaurants! So for those who have never been here, you should seriously consider, especially since their appetizer presentation is absolutely bizarre, but nonetheless, it is really good and so worth trying. I highly suggest their prefix menu($ 25/$ 32/$ 35) which will include an unlimited self-serving appetizers(literally and laughing at it!) If you’re looking to have unlimited house wine, then minus well make it $ 54 and that will also include tips and tax. Their food is really amazing, generous and delicious! Also if you like to eat well and dine cheap, then you might want to consider getting their coupon at and to make the meal taste even sweeter!!! Note: If you’re planning to purchase anything from , always do a google search for the code promotion and who knows, you might be lucky enough and get it for $ 3.50/$ 2.00 instead of full price. Bön appétit :))))
