La Sonrisa Empanadas At Broadway Bites

Fairly quick. Fairly cheap. Fairly tasty. The chicken empanadas made for a perfect quick meal whilst shopping Bryant Park at Christmas time. I was surprised at how tasty they were and the added bonus was that no fork was required. While there I picked up a yummy little grapefruit soda to wash it all down.

I ordered the queso empanada with spicy sauce and I am so glad I decided to get the spicy sauce. There was barely queso in the middle and it was bland. I love queso and queso anything is a must order but this was expensive and lack in so many ways. There is nothing good to say about this.

I stopped by at the Broadway Bites shack just in time to fulfill a long overdue empanada craving. I put in an order for Coconut Curry Chicken and Beef empanada, and then waited ~15 minutes. I didn’t mind the wait since I wasn’t in a rush, but I could see my fellow patrons getting very frustrated since they didn’t anticipate having to hang around for so long. The staff also didn’t seem particularly rushed in trying to accommodate the growing line. Perhaps I caught them on a bad day.
Coconut Curry Chicken: Excellente! Loved this filling, the shredded chicken was beautifully marinated and mixed with the flavor of coconut and curry which was definitely noticeable.
Beef: Meh… I don’t know what it was about this one but I wouldn’t order it again. It was almost tasteless and the crust overpowered the filling?
If had I ordered just the CCC and there wasn’t such a long wait, this would have easily been 5 stars however, all things considered I had to bump it down to 3.

Probably the best empanadas I’ve tried (classic beef and the mushroom). Spicy mayo was delicious!

Kinda pricey chicken coconut empanadas. 3.75 each. The sauces make it worth it.
Perhaps consider dropping the price?

Absolutely my favorite empanadas! Walk 40 blocks to Bryant Park just to get two beef ones! So yummy!

Love love love La Sonrisa. Ummm, yes they need a storefront asap because I am like a stalker popping up at all their pop up locations lol. I’m addicted and they know my name, which says a lot! Ha!

Absolutely loved these empanadas at the urbanspace in the garment district (only around until this Friday). The roasted chicken was awesome especially with their hot sauce but their coconut curry chicken was the ultimate; I could eat this every day. Delicious!!!

That was upsetting to say the least, but they are TOP NOTCH. One coconut curry chicken, and I was hooked. It was make to order, and took about 6 min. It was delicious and surprisingly filling for one empanada.
For $ 3.75, it seemed reasonable, and it was at Broadway Bites, so if you grab a friend and split the cost of everything… it was well worth it.

Everyone needs to say YES to this place. They need a storefront. Seriously.
They make it fresh and hot to order — be prepared to wait a couple of minutes, but it’s worth it! I promise!
We ordered the coconut curry chicken (most popular according to personnel). Savory, hot, and complements well with the spicy mayo and hot sauce given. Can’t really dunk it as it’s huge and won’t fit in the container, so pour it on!
We also ordered the beef empanadas — also rich and savory in flavor. My mouth is watering just thinking of it while writing this review. Maybe it’s a good thing they don’t have a store — I would get fat wanting to eat these everyday!
$ 3.75 each (although there were two as presentation sample) — worth the price in my opinion.
Hot, fresh, and yummy! Can’t get any better than that!

Another favorite at the summer pop-​up Broadway Bites. La Sonrisa Empanadas are my new faves. The coconut curry empanada is a full on flavor explosion. The distinct creaminess of the curry and the very fresh coconut taste shine through in this perfectly cooked chicken empanda. I could eat this every day. This one is always crowded but that’s because its so damn tasty. Try before they close on August 1^st.
