Kumon Math and Reading Center of Upper East Side II

so after I had bad previous experience with them, I gave them an another opportunity (several of my friends in Japan had great time in Kumon), but this was worse. I made an appointment through internet, and they sent me a confirmation email for the date and time. I went the place. no one was there. no kids. no Kumon people. I called them and left voice message. after close 30mins, they called me. the UES is off today!!!
I am done with you Kumon.

This review is specifically for Shirley Dong who takes care of the UES center on Sun/​Mon and Thursdays. We had a very bad experience with the center and Shirley. My son kept getting certificates for the Honor roll for Math and Reading levels that he did not even complete. His records and study plan were incomplete and there was no individualized attention. It is effectively a place you are playing $$$ for just the materials. When we confronted Shirley and asked her why he has been getting certificates that are incorrect she told us that the certificates are actually pre-​ordered! She thought our son will be at that level 3 months back!
I had enrolled my son because I had heard good things about Kumon from friends and family, but this center proved to be extremely poorly run and detrimental to my son’s learning experience.

This review is based only on our initial reception, not on the entire experience at this Kumon branch. I took my son to take an initial placement test in Math. He did not do well (hence why we were seeking Kumon help). The man who administered the test chuckled as he marked the wrong answers. I guess he found it funny that my son had trouble on the test. My son was embarrassed and demoralized. Needless to say we will not be taking him here. Took him to the Central Harlem Kumon instead and the orientation and placement process compared to that at Eastside was like night and day. At Eastside the orientation and placement is done in the midst of madness as other students come in and out to do their work. The orientation is brief and distracted and the person giving the orientation made very little attempt to connect with my son.
