Also wir waren schon mal entzückt!

One of New York’s legendary steakhouses, Keen’s has been on my bucket list for a while. Reservations are tough, book a couple of weeks out. The legendary mutton chop lives up to the hype, served rare, and the T-bone, also rare, was perfect. A well chilled, shrimp cocktail with five jumbo pieces was a good starter and tasty sides included Yukon Gold mashed potatoes and creamed spinach. Topped off with a massive hot fudge sundae, a few beers and wine and we were all set. Not quite the ritual steakhouse event that Luger’s or some other NYC giants provide, but a nice, clubby atmosphere and great food. Not surprisingly, it doesn’t come cheap at just under $ 300 for two, but if you go in looking for one of the city’s more memorable dining experiences, you get what you pay for.

This place is aces 10 :) I brought my sweetheart here for his birthday and they were more then accommodating with everything. We ordered the lobster bisque, and of course steak. They brought a candle out on the dessert and it was just perfect. Very lovely place with amazing food.

This place is a New York icon. No need to reiterate all the fabulous things about the food, drinks and service. The dining experience is memorable. It’s the best steakhouse in Manhattan(with matching prices). I absolutely love all the vintage pipes lining the ceiling.

Another Soccer Dad’s night out — time to splurge. When my buddy suggested Keen’s I finally will get a chance to order the«Legendary Mutton Chop». The smallish bar was packed as it’s a Friday night but the bartenders were attentive and managed to get a couple of drinks before the main event. I started off with a Bloody Mary that did not taste like any other — it was sweet. The bread rolls were warm and fresh, pickles were deliciously tangy and crunchy. So we had the bacon appetizer which came with a bit of grape tomatoes and greens — perfect. The server suggested I order the Mutton Chop medium, which I thought was odd, but it came out beautifully. The meat was not as tender as I had expected, but exploded with flavor. It looks like there were 5 pounds of meat in that dish. The flap was surprisingly probably the best part — it was deliciously fatty. I know I would not be able to eat all of it so I carefully sliced half and will find out the next day if it keeps well. If it does, it will be worth it — if not, then the would be the last time I will order. Service was excellent although they forgot our Oysters Rockefeller appetizer. Overall a great experience.

I love me a good steak. A friend had highly recommended Keens Steakhouse saying it has the best steak ever. The husband and I thus made reservations for Valentine’s day and we were super excited. We arrived 30 minutes early for our 6pm reservation and were seated nonetheless. You will have the option to check-in your coat which may actually be a wise idea considering you’ll be pretty much packed like a sardine if you are here with just one other person and happened to be seated along the wall. Yes, it is one of those restaurants with tables so close to another that your table will have to be pulled out in order for you to get to the seat on the inside. There is about 6 – 8 inches between the neighboring tables so be prepared to listen awkwardly to other couples’ conversations. We were given a complimentary warm bread basket and veggie platter with dip to start. We ordered the thick-cut smoked bacon and the Maryland crab cakes for appetizers. I had the prime T-bone steak for my main course and the husband had the prime rib of beef. We also ordered the sautéed field mushrooms as a side to share. — Thick-Cut Smoked Bacon: Comes with 3 pieces. Had a nice smokey flavor. It was good, but definitely not the best I’ve had. — Maryland Crab Cakes: Comes with 2 pieces. Standard, nothing exciting. I think I might’ve enjoyed the little salad it came with more than the crab cakes itself. — Prime T-Bone Steak: This piece of meat is definitely gorgeous to look at. I thought it could’ve used more seasoning though. — Prime Rib of Beef, King’s Cut: This generous portion of meat is very tender. You can definitely tell it is of great quality. It is served with a side of horseradish sauce which is very unique, but I don’t know how I feel about it with meat. — Sautéed field mushrooms: Simply tossed with butter and garlic. I had high hopes for this one because I’ve had some crazy awesome sautéed mushrooms at another steakhouse so naturally I was disappointed. There were just little things that irked me about this restaurant. The fact that the couple who sat next to us ordered their foods no more than 5 minutes before us, yet they were done with their appetizers and steaks, and were on their desserts before we even had our steaks served. It was such a long wait that I almost feel like our waiter had forgotten to put our orders in. Even our waiter sensed it I’m sure because after what felt like half an hour he stopped by our table to let us know that«the food will be out any minute.» I also didn’t appreciate that when we asked for our leftovers to be wrapped up, our mushrooms never made it into the bag which we found out the next day. This is not the first steakhouse that does not automatically wrap up the sides — but still absolutely ridiculous. Overall, I found this restaurant to be highly underwhelming. I just was not impressed. I will certainly not be back.

If you love steaks, you can’t leave out Keens steakhouse as one of your choices. I’ve been to many steakhouses in the past and I prefer Keens T-bone over any other steakhouse’s steaks. First of all it’s always cooked just about right. I usually get medium rare and it’s always cooked just about right except during the times I came here for lunch. I’m guessing that there’s someone else in the kitchen who is not as well trained during the less busy hours. Other than that, I have nothing bad to say about this steakhouse. ALSO, try the lamb chops. Lamp chops usually have this distinctive smell that makes me want to stay away from it, but Keens got a special sauce that sort of covers up or neutralizes it. It’s worth trying Keens lamb chops. BTW, I prefer Keens over Luger’s(the one from Great Neck)

Maybe my favorite steakhouse in NYC, especially if you limit your evaluation to just the steakhouse essentials — meat, potatoes, salads, etc.(I think somewhere like Quality Meats gives it a solid run for its money, but Keens is far more traditional, to the point where it’s almost a different class entirely.) We’ve had the porterhouse(outstanding, but somewhere behind Luger’s in my opinion), the filet(definitely among the best I’ve had), and the prime rib(which is almost certainly the best I’ve ever had). For apps, the shrimp cocktail is great, as is the tomato/onion/mozzarella salad. For sides, the broccoli/cauliflower dish is great, as are the mushrooms, and especially the mashed potatoes. At some point in my life I will also try the oysters, out of sheer curiosity if nothing else, but I haven’t quite gotten there yet. It’s also worth noting that the inside is very, very cool if you’re into the old school New York vibe.

My wife took me here for my birthday and I had no idea what to expect. The first thing that hits you is the décor. The establishment used to be a pipe joint where famous presidents and powerful people kept their pipes, which line the walls. A really cool concept. The steak… was…bomb. Like, I would argue in line or better than Peter Lugers, which is saying a lot. I loved every aspect of the dinner. The service was stupendous and the overall flow was just sublime. I highly recommend this place to anyone visiting NYC.

One of the better steakhouses in Manhattan, meat is aged and marbled. The bar area is almost always crowded but it’s a fun place to grab a drink before you get seated for dinner. Mutton is a must try as is the steak. The appetizers were OK(nothing special). Keens has been around for a long time and is worth a try if you are looking for a good steak.

Once every full moon I turn into a ravenous carnivore without regard for otherwise wholesome values such as sustainability and moderation. When this happens I descend upon Keens with a predatorial glean in my eyes. I emerge from the place that has stood for over a hundred years, sated for the moment on the best lamb chop to be found in the known universe. And so the city’s population goes safe for another passing of moons. Pray Keens never close.

It’s the first time I’ve been to an upscale steakhouse so I didn’t know what to expect. But first things first, if it wasn’t for the reviews or recommendation from a friend, I wouldn’t have walked in. The outside looks so boring and even un-noticeable! The service and the design(decoration) of the restaurant is great! But, the tables are so cramped up together, you can literally smell the breath of your neighbors. Not sure if others are comfortable with the seats. Menu is limited and pricey. We ordered the bacon, mixed vegetable and steak for 2. The bacon is recommended, it’s very favorable and very different than any bacon you’ve ever had! The mixed vegetable, on the other hand, is quite terrible, so DONOT order that! Steak is the MAIN dish since it’s a steakhouse, so I’m going to give you an honest opinion about this… it’s probably just a 6⁄10 in my book. $ 99 for 2 and I’d much rather go buy some nice steak and cook it myself at home. It lacks the punch, lacks the smell, texture, and taste very average. I enjoyed the experience, but definitely wouldn’t go and spend the time/money to be back again.

I went here with a coworker when we had just arrived in NYC. We didn’t have reservations, and the wait was about an hour(we arrived at 7:15PM). We waited in their bar, which has great beers on tap. I tried their in-house IPA(Keen’s Ale), which was pretty good. My colleague and I both had the 12 ounce filet mignon, which was delicious. They were cooked perfectly. I also had the lobster bisque, which was fairly average. My colleague had their bacon appetizer, which was amazing. I tried a piece and was blown away. We paid about $ 135 each, but that was with about 6 beers, two appetizers, two filets, and mashed potatoes(which were also great). The atmosphere was great. They have old theater posters and pipes all over the place as décor. They had a pipe at the front that had belonged to Theodore Roosevelt, which was cool to see.

I went for my wife’s birthday this last weekend. We had reservations and were promptly seated. I wanted a nice champagne and checked the wine list. No Dom Perignon. That was strange for a world class restaurant. I ordered something else and it was just OK. The place is old school all the way. Lots of wood, old news articles and 90,000 clay pipes hung from the ceiling. No contemporary pretensions here. Our waiter, Robert, came by to take our order. Never introduced himself or welcomed us. We had a seafood tray consisting of clams, lobster, oysters, shrimp and crab. Very fresh and delectable. Ice cold. Then the entrees. I had the 14oz filet. Medium rare, red wine sauce on the side. Not the best filet I ever had, but decent. The birthday girl had striped bass. I thought the portion was a bit skimpy, but I’m a big eater. We had an order of roasted veggies. A few peppers, mushrooms and fennel and some greens. Forgettable about sums it up. No one ever asked how our meals were. Since there were no issues, that wasn’t a problem. Still you expect better from a legendary place like Keen’s. We were given a complimentary desert for the occasion and the bill was about $ 450 with tip. Going to NYC is a special event. Despite a slightly better than average dining experience, I’d go consider going back just for the history of the place. There’s places that make better food, cheaper and with a better ambiance. They just don’t have 90,000 clay pipes hanging about!

Stopped in, and walls lined with photos and prints from a past age. They ushered us up to the second floor for seating(they also have a ground floor), and then let us have ample time ordering and choosing, taking menus back and forth after our appetizer course. Certainly no rush here. Shrimp cocktail — big, but overcooked a touch — fell apart and one wasn’t cleaned well. The oysters were cold and tasty, three different varieties. The thick-cut bacon — always a nice touch, though the top one was overcooked and burnt too much for my taste. Others looked well done. Prime Rib of Beef, King’s Cut — massive and rich, salt crusted outside, and well done at hte edges into a beautiful medium rare in the center. Lots of gristle and fat, but it’s ok, the size means you have plenty of meat still in with the bone-in cut. Delicious, and though I didn’t use the garlic sauce to the side, it was a good cut. Horseradish cream would have been amazing, I think. Dessert — the bananas foster — delicious mix of ice cream and candied bananas. Tasty and light. Ice cream with expresso poured on it was also a popular dessert.(not for me, I’m not a coffee drinker). While I’ve had better dessert(the chocolate cake at Strip house) and better steak(the prime rib at Roots), I can still appreciate a leisurely dinner here for work purposes.

Excellent steakhouse that is always packed! Definitely make a reservation early when you have a set date. I wish there was more space between tables rather than eating elbow to elbow. You’re bound to listen to the conversation next to you, that’s how close each table were set. Rather than walking in a restaurant, I felt that I was walking into a cozy dining room. I came here for my boyfriend’s birthday and it definitely met our expectations. Neither of us have ever tried Mutton Chops and based on photos, this was a huge chunk of meat. When it arrived, our eyes were glued to the plate. The meat was so tender, but by the time my boyfriend finished it, it got cold. Yes it took a while because it was such a huge cut! I had the 8 oz. Filet Mignon. AHHH, words cannot describe how good it was. I’m not even a big fan of steak, but this had my taste buds tingling for more.

This review is long overdue! I came here for my birthday several months ago and had a great time. Service was superb and the food was great-I had the filet mignon as well as some spinach for our side dish. I also had some specialty cocktail that I can’t find on their website… whatever it was, it was tasty! Anyways-we were able to park our stroller next to our table which was great. When I asked if there was a changing table, one of the workers walked me all around the restaurant(great tour) and took me to this random room where I could change my bebe(he laid out some fancy napkins for us). Then he turned around as I changed my bebe and took the diaper from me. Wow… that was very unnecessary and unexpected but it was amazing that he did all of that for us! Fanciest changing experience ever: P

Last Monday was time for our Holiday Lunch with our national distributor held at Keens Steakhouse. This iconic venue with all the clay pipes on the ceiling is one of the oldest bastions remaining in NYC that serves huge Mutton Chops, Steaks and Prime rib among their other offerings. The place was packed and the din was loud and boisterous… hard to hear across the table. Watching the trays of food being served around us wet my appetite… I ordered a 32oz King Prime rib which looked fantastic and tasted the same. Ordered rare it was perfect and went so will with the creamed spinach. No matter what you order, its gonna be great! Bring your black bag as the prices reflect the size of the portions and the quality. Particularily attractive if your being taken out for the holiday meal!

When I headed to NYC back in August, I was jonesing for some steak and thanks to Keens, I had one of the best my life. The ambiance is fantastic. Dim lighting, and a very unique dining experience under thoughts of pipes imported from the Netherlands( ) To start off at your table, they give you a basket of bread and a veggie platter of celery, carrots, olives, and a pickle with blue cheese ranch dressing. The bread was really good, but I loved the veggie platter(I *try* to eat healthy as much as possible… this night wasn’t one of those nights). For my meal, I got the T-bone steak. It’s probably the best steak I’ve ever eaten! This thing is a monster too. It was cooked perfectly, salted and buttered just the right amount, it melts in your mouth. I dream about that damn T-bone. The BF had to try to the legendary Mutton Chop. HUGE. DELICIOUS. Just what he wanted. He still talks about that Mutton Chop. For sides we got creamed spinach(outstanding) and Sauteed Field Mushrooms. The service was a tad off. Our waitress seemed almost disinterested in our table. When you go to a fine steakhouse, one of the things I look for is a knowledgeable, but more importantly, «interested in what they’re doing». Instead of making it a memorable dining experience, it seemed like she just wanted to get us in/out. Maybe she was having an off night. For dessert, we had the Crème brûlée. AMAZING. If you don’t walk out of here with the meat sweats, you’ve done something wrong.

Don’t mistake this fine steak house for fine dining. The kings cut prime rib at $ 58 was good but not noticeably better than most steak chains. The 8oz fillet was equally unremarkable. The seating was worse than dinning in coach on a domestic airline, crammed between tables, hot and stuffy. But, the service really makes you wish you’d gone elsewhere. The waiter was tired and conspicuously absent from the time he squeezed in to take our order to the time he brought the check. Don’t expect more than drive thru service and you won’t be disappointed. Granted, The Capitol Grill, Morton’s and Trulucks may lack Keens or Lugars tradition and history. But, they could teach these guys a few lessons on how to consistently serve up a fine dinning experience paired with a great steak. Meh!

Are you looking to get your midtown steakhouse on? Well, my friend, Keen’s Steakhouse has got you covered: Strong drinks, massive slabs of meat and tons of wood paneling. Keen’s is a lot more than that. These guys have been around since 1885 and the place has a very old-school feel. Unlike other steakhouses in midtown that tend to be large, raucous destinations, Keen’s is spread out into several rooms across 2 floors. It is very cozy, and with all the wood paneling and paintings, it has a very clubby feel. The steaks were excellent as were the sides. I got the filet mignon with béarnaise sauce and some veggies. The service was great as well, our servers were always there when we needed it but were never hovering or rushing us to the next course. We were well taken care of by the team at Keen’s.

So what to get from Keens? Steak! Everything I had was great. If you can’t choose, let me help you. The staff is great. You can pack your food to go and they are very accommodating. The table next to me had leftovers but didn’t want to carry it since they were going to see a Broadway show after. The waiter offered to hold on to it till they came back. How nice! I’ll definitely be back. — Oysters — fresh and refreshing, half a dozen is not enough for two! — Prime NY Sirloin — so tender, so delicious, a must get(get it medium or medium rare) — Prime T-Bone — I prefer the NY sirloin more(this is too fatty for me and the sauce wasn’t as great as the sirloin but still good) — Roasted mushrooms — can’t go wrong with it — Market vegetables — you can pass on this(get another side dish, maybe asparagus)

Keen’s Steakhouse is number 1 on my steakhouse list. I think the combination of the food plus the restaurant décor, ambiance and service makes this the perfect old-fashioned steakhouse. I become a different person when I walk in, a steak addict salivating for the medium rare meat to hit the table with a whiskey old-fashion on the side. Fortunately it wasn’t on my dime the first time I ate here so I was able to try an assortment of food. We ordered the thick-cut smoked bacon, the chilled seafood tray and iced shrimp cocktail. All delicious. Even the complimentary bread was worth the taste. Let me talk about the bacon. The way a thick-cut bacon is executed is part of what could make or break a steakhouse I feel. It’s a true indicator of what’s to come. The bacon here was done right. Simple as that. For my main dish, I had to get the Legendary Mutton Chop. I devoured the whole thing. It was humongous and just amazing. Cooked to the perfect temperature, nice and juicy. The second time I came here, I got it again to share. I also split the New York Strip which was beautifully charred/seasoned on the outside, medium rare on the inside. Excellent. I’ve already come here twice and I will go again. This may become an annual tradition of mine.

Keens Steakhouse is a classic example of the fine dining steakhouse restaurant. It’s been around forever, the décor and setting is incredible, and the quality of the meat matches the expensive asking price. As far as classy steakhouses go, Keens is one of the better ones I’ve been too. Much has been written about Keens already, and I won’t rehash what many others have already said. I will say however that the décor of this place is truly one of a kind. It was a real treat to enjoy a meal in this place. On to the food. The 12 ingredient salad I started with was a real surprise, and I have to say was one of the best salads I’ve had in recent memory. The portion isn’t huge so you can still enjoy your steak, the dressing isn’t overpowering, and the colors really make everything pop. Great starter. Some bread and vegetables on ice were brought out for the table, complementary, and they were fine. I’d avoid munching on these too much though if you’re interested in saving space for the entrée. Entrée’: NY Sirloin. Dry aged. Great flavor. Cooked to a perfect medium. The cut was a little fatty for me however, especially on the left side of the sirloin. If you’re into dry aged meat though, this is a winner. Sides: Creamed spinach was outstanding. Seriously. Get this. Asparagus was just okay-seemed like it needed a bit more time in the steamer. A little bit chewy. Dessert: Carrot cake was good. Nothing special, but a nice sweet way to end the meal. Drinks: I had the Martinez, and would highly recommend it to any gin fans out there. This drink was mixed very well, and had just a wonderful orange hue and taste that I hadn’t had before. Service: To be perfectly honest, our waiter seemed almost disinterested in our table. When you go to a fine steakhouse, one of the things I look for is a knowledgeable, but more importantly, «interested in what they’re doing kind of waiter». This guy didn’t really have that. The host for our section however was awesome. He came over towards the end of the meal, asked how everything was going, and we ended up having a really nice conversation about NY’s steak scene. That’s the kind of service I expected from the waiter, not the host! To sum it up, Keen’s is a great choice for a fine steak. The service, and to some extent the food, leave a bit to be desired, but not to a large extent. Highly recommended.

Keens is by far one of the best steaks house in NYC ! From service to food it’s terrific all around ! The steaks are delicious, cooked to perfection always flavorful. The fresh seafood plateau is as fresh as it gets … The mutton is what you try if you have never tried it as Keens is the only place to serve this(it’s really good if you like lamb) Not much more to say its proximity to the garden is convenient too ! Keens is a must try you will not be disappointed ! Thanks Keens for the awesomeness you deliver ! See you soon.
