Went for Omakase on an early Sunday evening and arguably it was the best sushi that I have ever had. The sushi was creative, delicious and memorable. It was a treat to sit at the sushi bar watching our sushi prepared right in front of us and interactive with the wonderful chef. The service was outstanding with all of the servers being friendly and helpful. The décor of the restaurant is relatively basic but it doesn’t matter, it is all about the food and the service. The Omakase is not cheap but it is well worth the money. It is perfect for a special occasion, a nice date night or if you just in the mood for some great sushi.

I tried out this place on a whim… I was just in a mood for sushi and it was close by. The place is small and there is nothing fancy. I almost walked passed it going there so that tells you something. Once inside, we were greeted with a very nice host and wait staff. We were not in a mood for anything in particular so we decided to let the Chef do the picking for us so we each ordered the Omakase. The Chef is a master at his craft b/c each piece he made was better than the last… my fav was the foie gras which you would never think would be delish sushi style but it was! I will say that the Omakase is NOT cheap! But I would say, if you’ve never done one; it’s worth a try. It was I believe about $ 130/pp not including tax or tip(or drinks for that matter!) so if you’re looking for fine dining, with ambiance when spending that kind of money on a meal; this is not the place for you. Overall, it was a great night with delicious food and simple ambiance.

Came here with the family for dinner on 1÷10÷16 and was fortunate enough to sit at the bar. This place is out of this world. If you are looking for value, you are looking at the wrong place. Be ready to spend the four dollar signs as advertised, but what you are getting is sushi that is exclusive, modern, and of the utmost freshness. The chef prepares creative fusion pieces that will blow you away. Each piece felt personalized, as he hand placed each piece unto our plate and the taste was nothing like I’ve ever tasted. Favorite: red snapper with roasted pine nuts and lotis roots. Highly recommended. I will be back to this gem of a Japanese restaurant.

I love sushi, eat a fair amount of it and this place just won a little piece of my heart. The Omakase was awesome!!! The sushi with the special toppings was delish!!! I’m a total desert gal but at this place I opted for extra sushi as my desert. Yes, it was that good. Highly recommend!

I treat myself to Gari once every few months. Go solo and get whatever my heart desires. Fish: very fresh, uni is really excellent, snapper and mackerel are great. Fish is a bit pricey but no pricier than other high-end sushi joints in the city. Service — my waitress was very consultative and recommended the right way to order– excellent service. Value: I think the chirashi is good value– more expensive than local UWS spots but much more fresh. Ambience: warm, not sterile, good for groups, pairs, or solos. Good spot just watch out for the price tag.

Came here from an advise from a friend. Turned out to be a good advise. We had sushi, pricey, but excellent. Made lunch reservations for 1:30 pm, when we arrived, we saw plenty of empty tables. After our meal, the place was packed.

If you are into raw fish coated in oil then you will love Gari! Are u kidding me gari? When I order sushi deluxe I do NOT expect these things:1) to get a «fried» scallop 2) to get a weird cooked Salmon 3) all other supposedly raw pieces to come with a coat of oil(yes it makes it tastier perhaps but it’s absolutely disgusting and dishonest) !!! if u call it sushi fusion it might work! Absolutely do not recommend

Sushi is perfectly cut and fresh. Waiters were quick even though it was pretty busy. I suggest trying new rolls here because hey have many unique ones worth trying. Ambiance is good for a date night. Service was great we were seated right away without a reservation which was so accommodating. Do not come with kids Enjoy

By far the best sushi in the city that’s not insanely exclusive. Lived in nyc for 15 years. traveled to Japan and ate sushi there for a month. This is the closest you will. come to feeling like you are in Japan eating true Japanese sushi. Enjoy kids. You won’t be dissapointed

Had a fun time with my friend here for dinner! Pricier than sushi places I frequent out in Queens, but I didn’t expect otherwise in this particular area. We came for dinner around 6 – 7, and it wasn’t particularly crowded yet. It was a weeknight and maybe people were still stuck in rush hour on the trains. We were able to get a seat right away, by the window, which was nice. It wasn’t silent in the restaurant, but quiet enough(with the right amount of background noise chatter) where we could actually talk and hear one another. Hostess was very pleasant when she welcomed us in! Great service! Our waiter was equally friendly and attentive, a young guy, cute. Had a good sense of humor when I was joking with my friend. It was nice to see someone have some personality rather than a stoic person. Sushi rolls were great — not overly rolled with rice, but a good balance. We took our time eating and we never felt rushed. Great location — Central Park and the museum. When I was walking back to the train station, it was quiet and I didn’t feel any tension or stress meandering around here. Might be different during the summer or earlier in the day/weekend.

Gari is the place that all craving dreams that feature Sushi originate from. Seriously. Although it’s on the pricey side, the Omakase menu is probably one of the best in Manhattan. Definitely try!

Went here for lunch with my fiancé. The whole experience of trying sushi fused/mixed with other flavors was fun and delicious. It was worth trying the sushi here. We ordered two sushi of gari entrees and one tuna plate. The lunch entrees all came with an extra roll. We really should’ve only ordered the two sushi of gari entrees since we were so full afterwards. But the tuna plate was good too on its own. It came with 8 different parts of the tuna with different toppings/mixtures. Th food came out pretty fast and the waiters were all attentive.

Pricey, but some really excellent dishes. I stopped with a friend on a Friday evening, and we were able to snag a pair of seats between reservations; it was a bit surprising to me how busy it was as most seats were taken. We split the tuna of gari platter, the sashimi platter, and the beef short ribs. The sashimi platter was a bit meh to me, kind of pricey for the quality/taste of fish, but the other two dishes were very good. The non-spicy tuna sushi in particular was very good, and the beef ribs were very tender and tasty. I’d come back for the special tuna and try some of the other appetizers.

Came here to celebrate my anniversary. We ordered tuna and gari special. Quality of sushi is good. Environment is set to be typical Japanese. We also ordered dessert, which is completely western while we expect something Japanese.

Came here to celebrate my husband’s birthday, and I’ve heard so much good things about the sushi here. It did NOT disappoint. We didn’t get the omakase but we did get one of the all-sushi specials — I think it was 10 pieces of sushi and one tuna roll. I usually don’t like tuna. I don’t like the taste of it, I prefer a sweeter salmon. Gari is the first place that made me love tuna — how amazing is that? Each piece rolled off my tongue and into my begging stomach. I would be obnoxious and say that it was a symphony in my mouth, but whatever, it was FREAKINGDELICIOUS. If only we could make each piece last longer. Service was fine, we were super low key as we both only had that one item and left under 45 minutes flat.

As much as the BF& I wanted the Omakase, we ordered a la carte at Gari and it was great! We shared an order of hot sake, followed by their iced green tea & iced oolong tea. Their iced green tea has rolled me into an obsessed with matcha powder! After being served hot towels, we shared a few appetizers that were all very good. Negimaki — My favorite! Scallion rolled with thinly sliced rib eye beef with teriyaki sauce and crushed red pepper Haru Maki — Delicious deep fried crab and shrimp Japanese spring roll Kaiso Salad — four kinds of fresh seaweed with homemade onion dressing(not my favorite seaweed salad, but I always need some greens with my meal) And for the sushi, we started with two pieces of the Fatty Tuna Sushi. I could feel my eyes roll back as the smooth, buttery Fatty Tuna melted away on my tongue. Although very pricey for a piece of Sushi, it was phenomenal and well-worth it! We then shared about four different maki rolls which were all great(my favorite being the fatty tuna with scallion). And finally, we ended our night with fried green tea ice cream… yammiiiiiiii !

Gari is always a winner! We headed to the UWS outpost because the one on the UES couldn’t seat us until 10 pm. We were not disappointed. The hubby and I order Gari on a regular basis(the UES branch delivers) so we went for the sushi and sashimi omakase. Below is a sampling of what we had: Sockeye Tuna with cucumber sauce Tuna Sardine Tuna with Tomatoes Fluke Scallop Shrimp Fried Oyster Backed Oyster Miso Cod There were a lot of courses that I am missing but it was all delicious. The service was outstanding and the Sake was delicious. Love Love Love!

Came here with a friend for a weeknight dinner. The place was full so I would recommend a reservation especially after 730/8PM. We ordered: **beef short ribs w/chips — it comes with 5 pieces. I had 3 and was too full to finish my sushi orders! **2 sushi deluxe — the fatty tuna in here was the best and melts in your mouth as it should! Mine also had a scallop but my friend doesn’t eat shellfish so they were able to substitute in another piece. **2 fresh mackerel nigiri **salmon roll The fish was very fresh but I am only giving Gari 3 stars for my dinner because half of the sushi in the sushi deluxe order had a wasabi taste(wasabi on the sushi chefs knife?) and I do not like to eat wasabi with my fish! It was like playing a guessing game of if the next piece would taste like fish or fish and wasabi :(I did really enjoy the pieces that did not have a wasabi flavor though! The location is a plus because afterwards, you can walk down the street past the Natural History Museum and take a walk through Central Park.

Omg this is hands down one of the best sushi place I ate at! At lunch, there’s only omakasei on the sushi bar, but that’s definitely the best way to go. You can get all sushi, all sashimi or mixture. We decided to go more sashimi the sushi since I don’t like rice. First up, the sashimi plate with taro, sweet shrimp, oyster, tuna and salmons. Man, the fresh was so fresh! And the best was the taro!!! It literally melts in your mouth on its own. Second plate up were sashimi too. I can picture it in my head but I can’t remember the names of it. I know one had s crunchy fried lotus root, it was so good! The one in the middle is some spicy come with tuna; that was amazing too. Last couple of dishes up were nigiri. My favorite one was the torch fish with quail egg melts all over it. This was by far hands down the best! If you’re here, you need to get one of these. Next one up is snow crab leg… Wow is the only word to describe it. Next up, salmon with friend tomato… Another one that blows your mind. Last one up was… Don’t remember… I lost track. Tip: make sure you make reservation because it only serves customer who had made reservations.

Awesome. Delicious. Some of the best sushi I’ve ever had! They actually knew what gluten was, which is a big plus for a sushi place. The only thing keeping this place from 5-stars is Sushi Yasaka, about 10 blocks south. It is the same high quality fish for less $$$

Tried the omakase, and it was fantastic. Pricey, yes, but pretty damn good. It was more like«modern» sushi(sauces and toppings and pretty accompaniments), so you may not like it if you are a sushi purist. Toppings included a salsa-like concoction, warm tomato, and quail egg. The uni(silky!) and toro(fatty!) in particular required nothing special and were on point. Our sushi chef was jovial, and our servers were pleasant. Ambience is more of a neighborhood-joint-type feel, but that’s OK because it’s in the neighborhood for us :) The delicious sushi is the star here! Overall: My wallet is sad, but my tummy is happy.

Christmas Day… Did not order a lot of food… and in LA, this tab would have gotten you double the amount. Yes, I know this is NYC… but $ 29 for chicken teriyaki that was dried out… and literally the WORST chicken teriyaki any of us have tasted, was shameful. I think because it was Xmas we did not send it back, but honestly it could have been used as jerky… I will say the sushi was fantastic… overpriced, but fantastic. The salmon was the second best I have ever had… beautiful, thickly cut… tender, delicious and melt in your mouth. Spicy tuna was also delicious, as was the eel. And the omakase looked absolutely amazing… I was riveted by the chef’s work at the sushi bar and would love to try that if I come back… But I’m telling you, the chicken was so bad, it might just keep us away. I am sure we are a little spoiled in LA, as we can get fantastic sushi at a most reasonable price… and again, this is New York… but come on. You need to do better across the board, especially at the prices you are charging.
