I was headed to NYC for a gala and needed to find a place to get a blowout. I found Gabriel Shimunov Salon here on Unilocal — and decided to try it out. I also found a coupon on Groupon for the service. The Salon was top notch from start to finish! I called and was quickly fit in for service. The Salon itself was on the 11^th floor of a building on 57^th street — it was clean and bright and welcoming. The stylist who provided my service was a professional and took time and care to make sure my hair looked fantastic. I was welcomed back — even with my Groupon discount! I felt fantastic attending the Gala and got many positive comments about my hair throughout the night. Thank you all for making me feel welcome and for doing such a great job. Maryellen

So happy with the service here! I got a brazilian blowout for my very frizzy, thick, wavy hair to tame it in the NYC summer heat and it worked like a charm. No frizz and it dries totally smooth. The ladies who did my hair at the salon were lovely and super friendly and the salon had a low key vibe which I liked. They had multiple people working on me so I was in and out of there pretty quick.

I decided to come here for a haircut after seeing a deal for a cut and blowout on Gilt ($ 69 for services worth $ 250) and reading good reviews on the salon.
I left the salon completely underwhelmed by the salon, the service, and most importantly the cut. I regret paying the $ 69 I did (plus tip on the full service price) — and would never EVER be able to justify the normal amount.
The salon is in an office building and is the size of a studio apartment — which is totally fine, because I get it, not every place is going to be this big, expansive salon, BUT it was quite messy, unpolished, and just like NOT what I was expecting for a place that charges $ 250 for a cut and blowout.
The service was fine, but nothing to write home about. I walked in being like «Hello?» and was told to sit. After waiting for 5 – 10 minutes, someone came over to bring me over to the sink for a wash. Then I hung out for another 5 – 10 minutes while I waited for Gabriel to finish another client. It just wasn’t very friendly or attentive.
And finally — the cut. Honestly, I feel like I could have gotten the same cut and blowout at a Supercuts for $ 25. It could absolutely be partly my fault if I didn’t explain what I wanted well enough, but I did ask for a lot of layers and high angles. I received a blunt cut with 1 layer and barely any angles, which weren’t even matched up on both sides to make sure they were even. I understand that every stylist is different and may have a different way of cutting, however I’ve gotten too many haircuts to know that the way my hair was cut this time was not acceptable.
Wound up making a second hair appointment at another salon to receive the cut that I actually wanted (insert thumbs down emoji here).

The staff is extremely kind and made sure I was comfortable since I got in the salon. Installation was clean and neat, I had to wait for around 25 minutes to get the haircut but omg was it worth it.
I had really bad experiences in other businesses in the past due to how particular I am when it comes to my hair, but this salon got the idea of what I wanted and were perfect in execution. I liked that they took time to craft the haircut, no sloppiness, no rush. I felt they were actually paying attention in order to do a great job, and they did.

Gabriel was great. I got off the train from DC with my hair a complete mess, thinking I needed to look much more presentable than that for my college reunion. A nice blow out was certainly in order. I found Gabriel on Unilocal,booked online before the salon was open that day, and got a prompt confirmation from his assistant in 10 minutes.
I was impressed by how intimate and pleasant the studio felt. It’s certainly not a big, busy, noisy salon. I was greeted by a super sweet lady with gorgeous hair, and Gabriel arrived shortly.
Gabriel was friendly and very professional. A blow out is a blow out, but surprisingly I’ve had way too many bad ones in my life. Gabriel definitely knew was he was doing and made my hair look super silky, shiny and very healthy. It also held through the craziest night of partying I had in a while as well as the next day.
Can’t wait to go back to Gabriel for a haircut and balayage. If they are as good as my blow out, I might give up on my DC salons and start coming to NYC more often.

Got my hair colored here to even it out from the 3 different shades it had become over the summer and fall love my new even cool chocolate brown color and blow out! I will definitely be back when I need a haircut. Gabriel and his staff were all courteous, professional and fun!
And my haircut was dope too was all glammed up for my bday and the new year!

Felt like a sleek, private studio! Great lighting and not loud or intimidating like some of the big salons… Really liked the ‘private feel’ service. The woman who checked me in was incredibly nice and so was Gabriel. Decided to get my hair chopped off finally… Out with the old, in with the new… to clear out this horrible past year! Gabriel did a fast, and terrific cut. Perfectly straight with a few soft layers like I wanted, and finally got my side swept bangs back. Definitely would return!

Been coming to Gabriel for haircuts for a long time. He always does a good job with my hair. The salon is very clean and everyone is very attentive.

Had a fantastic experience with Gabriel today and I LOVE my hair cut and style! I’ve been looking for a new stylist and I’ve found him! The salon is beautiful and modern but still warm and friendly. I immediately felt like I was in GREAT hands! Such a Happy Hair day! Choosing a hair stylist is important and you can trust Gabriel!

Do you know when you read predominantly bad reviews about a hair salon owner and for some inexplicable reason, you hope The worst can’t possibly happen to you, too?
And then, it does??? And you so regret ever stepping foot into a salon that you read so many warnings about? You know a hair salon owner has deep deep deep deep deep deep issues, when he not only makes your hair look awful but then blames you, the client. Do not be his next victim.
Do not allow this hair salon owner to touch your hair for any reason.
He is not mentally stable and you should consider yourself WARNED.

This was my first time going here and not only did I get a great hair cut, wash and blow out that I am more than happy with, the service and staff in the salon were super friendly and made me feel like i had been coming here for years. Salon was clean and offered a great view and modern décor. I used the Groupon deal and would recommend that to anyone who wants to try Gabriel out but really nothing to worry about. I am shocked there are negative reviews on here because I had a great experience and will definitely go back (I didn’t do any color though). Gabriel was not only very professional and a talented stylist but also just a nice guy in general.
I have been in Manhattan for 5 years and I think I finally found my salon! :)

I’m going to wait and see if they’re going to fix my hair before I finalize my rating and review… Until then, 2 stars (yes two, because honestly, I probably should have stayed and had them fix it again immediately despite the fact they were closing.)

WORST SALON I have ever been to. Very very bad salon. I requested highlights and ended up paying a total fortune for a horrible job. It looks EXACTLY the same as when I walked in the door. The staff was very rude and gossipy. Also, the salon was extremely dirty and looked like a total mess.
I even called back and politely asked for them to do it again, they refused and said they thought my hair looked «just fine» and hung up the phone.
DO NOT GO HERE. YOU WILL GET TOTALLY RIPPED OFF.

I am not one to write bad reviews but my experience at this salon was absolutely awful. I had read all the reviews but decided to give it a chance… I should have listened to the past reviews!
My experience is with the owner himself, Gabriel. The staff was very pleasant but something was definitely off. I went there for the Brazilian blowout which let me add that I get one every summer and more than once. As the assistant was washing my hair, I kept hearing loud voices and it was between the owner and an ex employee who was waiting for him to get there. Gabriel was so disrespectful to his employee and was yelling at her while I was there. It was very uncomfortable and I wanted to leave but because I already paid for my treatment (groupon) I had to stay. The assistant kept apologizing and even after she was done washing my hair and I was in the chair, this arguing was still happening. This went on for 20 minutes and he should have taken this outside not in the salon. At the end of the day no one should be spoken to like this!!!
He barely apologized to me but I just kept taking a deep breath as my hair was in his hands. He has this contraption of an air filter for the chemicals but it is so cheap looking. I had to sit in front of it and basically keep my head in front of it for the whole treatment and it was very loud! He kept stopping to walk to the reception desk which I thought was rude. The application was sloppy and he was rough putting on the treatment. He then asks me if I wanted to have it rinsed!!! I have never had a Brazilian treatment that wasn’t rinsed out!!! As I tell him this, he says to me «this will cost an extra $ 50.00 to rinse and blow dry». Never in my life! I am walking advertisement for this place and you want me to leave with chemicals in my hair!!! I was mortified. Nonetheless he tells me that he would do it free of charge because of all the «drama» I witnessed… Couldn’t get out fast enough. I will never ever recommend this place to anyone. Groupon should be embarrassed that they chose this salon to do this deal!!!
To all the ladies who had this happen to them… I should have listened to your reviews!
This is the way it’s suppose to happen … WHAT TO EXPECT:
When you arrive at the salon, the process is as follows.
Stylist will shampoo your hair with the Brazilian Blowout specially formulated Anti-​Residue Professional Shampoo to prepare your hair for the optimal smoothing result.
After towel drying, your certified Brazilian Blowout stylist will divide your hair into sections and begin to comb the Brazilian Blowout Professional Treatment through each section of the hair from root to tip; lightly dusting each section with the solution.
Solution will surround each hair shaft with protective protein layers to smooth and flatten the cuticle.
Stylist will then blow-​dry your hair as straight as possible with a flat or round brush.
Once the hair is dry, the Stylist will divide the hair into four sections and begin using a flat iron to further straighten the hair in 1 — ¹³⁄₄ inch sections.
Once complete, the Stylist will rinse the hair (no shampoo), towel-​dry and apply the Brazilian Blowout Masque to further seal in the professional formulation. After 60 seconds, the stylist will rinse the hair once again and towel dry.
The Stylist will then apply the Brazilian Blowout Smoothing Serum to further seal the cuticle and assist in detangling the hair prior to the final blow dry.
The Stylist will then blow dry the hair straight one final time and style as desired.
You will leave the salon in approximately 90 minutes with beautiful, smooth, healthy radiant hair!

It’s very hard to find your hairstylist who gets what you want and need !! and make it happen! Gabriel is amazing! My hair is flawless after his haircuts, I know him for 5 years now and always beautiful results … Long, short, layers, bangs — loved them all :) Thanks, Gabriel !!!

Are you fucking kidding me?! This is the worst hair salon I’ve been to ever!!!
He burned my hair with the flatiron and then he left the colibri product in my hair and wanted to charge me to wash it out.
I’m so sad right now that I don’t know what to do to fix the damage he caused.
So, $ 250 for putting the stuff in my hair and then $ 150 to wash it out.

I am so happy to have found Gabriel! He is an amazing hair stylist and so professional. I have been looking to have a brazilian blowout and cut for a very long time. I found him through other reviews in NY and Conneticut and he has 5 stars all over the web. You will not go wrong with Gabriel. He cuts amazingly and blow dries your hair so beautiful! I also had the long layers hair cut and I have recieved so many compliments. I am very happy with my results and happy to have found my new hair stylist in NYC. :)
