Food fans do love a surprise, and my chance encounter today with this cart on Greenwich Street was, indeed, a surprise. There are other locations for El Rey in midtown, and those were the only ones available when trying to check in on Unilocal.Well, ever the pioneer, I added this location while waiting on my order. The cart is staffed by two people: one guy who handles the customers, and a woman furiously cooking over the grilltop while keeping both the other guy and customers in line. There are several traditional items(tamales, tacos, enchiladas, quesadillas) alongside some odd choices(gyro? really?). Stick with the traditional items because others on line said the food was great. I went with the Tongue/Lengua Quesadilla because tongue is an underappreciated cut of meat. Usually I’m having tongue on rye bread with mustard at a great deli, but it is a meat that lends itself to all kinds of dishes where you want the meat to have a lot of flavor. Yes, get to know tongue. My meal was both pretty and pretty tasty and, if you look at the photo I posted, you get a nice dollop of guacamole on top to cool the spicy filling. There is a nice touch of heat here – nothing crazy – which does add some depth and brightness. I’m guessing the cart will be returning to our area, especially if they keep drawing fans, though I don’t think they’re here every day(most rotate, appearing on a specific day of the week; today is Thursday). I’ll have to check back, and have to try some other menu items(yeah, definitely want a tamale).
