The Dia Center for the Arts is a great place, but it is no longer at 548 West 22nd Street! This historic Chelsea building constructed as a warehouse in 1920 and opened as a pioneering art space in 1987(heralding the gallery mecca that Chelsea would become) was closed by Dia in 2004, initially with plans to renovate which were subsequently dropped and the property sold in 2007. Dia does continue to have active art spaces, including two just across West 22nd Street, one of which is used for exhibitions. Dia’s immense and stunning main galleries are now in Beacon, NY(the subway doesn’t get you there, but MetroNorth railway does if you are without a car). Note: when Dia moved out of 548 they also left behind Dan Flavin’s site-specific, Untitled, 1996, whose stairwell illumination at least when they departed could still be seen from across the street when it was dark out.
