Theyre kind of a hit or a miss. Ive taken stuff to them twice now. The first time i brought a jacket which had been through some serious weathering and through a few stains. When i got it back, i was initially extremely impressed as to how clean it looked. But once i got home and unbuttoned it, i saw that they had not touched the inside lining which was still suffering from stains. For $ 20 it was kind of disappointing but at the time i figured no one would see those, so shrugged it off. Two days ago, i brought about 6 various articles. I had a bad feeling from the beginning when the woman at the front looked through them. She shook each out and kind of threw them around the table. Then as she gathered them i watched her scrunch up an expensive blouse in one hand as she used her other to ring up the register. I picked them up today. Of the 6, 4 of them were in great condition and carefully pressed and folded. The other 2… not so much. One still had some stains on them. Though maybe they were just old stains they couldnt get. But i think i still would have appreciated a heads up on it. The other blouse was ridiculous. I opened it up at home to find not only 2 mysterious pen marks but an obvious though small brown speck and surrounding smudges. I think it might have been chocolate as i could pick off the main speck that was causing the smudges. Going here is a bit of a gamble. You never really know what youre gonna get.

After reading good reviews on Unilocal,I decided to visit Comen Cleaners instead of other dry cleaners closer to my apartment. I wanted to find a place that has its own cleaning machine where the owner can inspect every clothe carefully, if it has been cleaned properly or not. Unlike the mass dry cleaning franchises where the owners simply wait for the truck to come pick up the clothes and return after three days, the Comen Cleaners owner wash the clothes themselves so I felt more comfortable leaving my expensive blouse and suits there. I was also satisfied with the result. Moreover, when you have many clothes to be dry cleaned, this place offers free delivery and discounts. I’ve been coming here for about three times now and I’ll only visit this place as long as I live in East Harlem.

I would have gone for four stars until recently because for perhaps a year I have been taking my suits and dresses here and have been very pleased with the friendly service and good results. Recently however I had a dress with a faux fur trim along the hem come back with the fur pressed/steamed completely flat. I asked why they would do this and the lady argued that it was actually OK like this. Well, the faux fur was not high quality and didn’t survive being steamed very well, so I had to remove it from the dress. Not the end of the world but I then started looking at the clothes I had taken there recently. These are all decent enough dresses and suits I wear in a business environment. When I looked closely at them I saw pleats carelessly ironed out or just messed up, neckline seams rolled to expose the lining, fabric pressed so hard the seams became shiny, in some cases the dress had actually shrunk and the lining now hung lower than the hem. The number of mishaps I found was just too high in the end and they really didn’t take me seriously when I mentioned it. The issues mostly seem related to careless or excessively hot steaming/pressing. I’m in the process of finding another dry cleaners at the moment. I can’t afford to have my clothes damaged so I won’t be going back here.

I have to say, it makes me really happy to write such a positive review about any business I come across. I’ve been looking for a good dry cleaner in the East Harlem neighborhood, but it’s been challenging as most of the reviews have thus far been for laundry and less for dry cleaning. I went to another spot a couple years ago and was scarred to have a brand new dress ruined(the material was burned and completely ruined). Since then, I’ve always gone back to Clean and More on 90th Street but it was out of my way. Finally, I decided it was time to take a risk, so I went to Comen Cleaners simply due to how close it was to my apartment. After multiple trips I felt like I could write a fair assessment of the place(and was relieved it was with good things to say!). The place looks like any other dry cleaners and is run some sweet Korean ladies. They were very friendly and seemed to know regulars by name. WHAT I CLEANED: A silk cocktail dress, a white silk blouse(with makeup stains!), a white wool sweater. I also brought in a merino wool sweater with a GIANT hole in the middle of the back(I didn’t sort my laundry properly and it ended up in the wash — I imagine some zipper got caught on it and wrecked it). WHAT I EXPECTED: Honestly, I was a little nervous since I had let the stains sit a little on all the items(hey, I was looking for a dry cleaner!). However, Comen was able to remove sweat stains from the silk cocktail dress, remove the makeup stains from an extremely unforgiving and fragile white silk blouse, AND she fixed that gaping hole in my sweater(which, by the way, is a very unique emerald green — they were able to find a shade that matched not perfectly, but very close) so that it was nearly unseen unless you were looking closely! I was so pleased — my mother had insisted that it wasn’t worth fixing but I’m so glad the ladies there tried. And quite honestly, when I first brought it in, the lady I dealt with was a little doubtful but stood there and examined the hole, thinking, and then finally decided she would try. I really appreciated that! The only thing that was a bummer was there was one stain that didn’t come out of my white wool sweater — however, I knew it was an old stain and that it was a long shot anyway. Honestly, it wasn’t a big deal — the rest of the sweater was cleaned well and I was so pleased with the other three items(and those really mattered more to me). WHAT I COUGHEDUP: As far as the prices go, this is what I was charged for the items: Wool sweater — fixing the gaping hole — $ 5 Wool sweater — cleaning — $ 10 Silk blouse — cleaning — $ 6 Silk dress — cleaning — $ 10 I’m now going to start bringing in some of my winter wool jackets for dry cleaning once I sort through what needs to go to the cleaners — I’ll update the review with more details then.
