Had a lovely, relaxing summertime dinner her last night with an old friend. All the windows were open to the sidewalk and a breeze cut the sticky humidity. Only one waiter was working last night! But he handled the room very well and was extremely courteous, a lost value in much of NYC restaurant dining today. The celeri remoulade was crisp and tart, enlivened with capers, but my chicken with tomatoes and zucchini was not quite as provencal delicious as it should have been. My friend said the mussels were excellent, as was the crème brûlée we shared for dessert. So, just one star off for the chicken. All in all, my friend and I found this restaurant quite special…

Incredibly bizarre dining experience. It began normally: the waiter brought us menus, asked us for drinks and then came back with said drinks to ask us for our order. We started off with an order of escargot and a salad. That’s when our waiter suddenly vanished, most likely to referee for or participate in an underground fight club. Whatever the reason, we didnt see him for the rest of our time there. We wanted to order more from their strange half Italian half French menu, but nobody would come take our order. Finally when we decided to leave by paying at the bar, there sat our waiter! Turns out he was on his phone the entire time. Voi la!

A true neighborhood gem, thankfully a measured distance from the honky tonk hustle and bustle of MacDougall Street’s usual college high jinks. The current owners, Frank and Yves, understand the importance of retaining the best of the old Chez Jacq while upgrading the French cuisine to a high standard of quality and consistency. Bravo!

Sweet, cozy restaurant with dark wood and low ceilings. Very romantic. Try to reserve a window seat! The squid pasta is delicious.

Came with a Groupon and was definitely treated like a second class citizen and you don’t get to order from the anywhere in the menu. Not returning.

3.5 Stars — I actually enjoyed the dinner from this place as I paid whole dinner with Groupon deal. 3 courses of meal plus one bottle of wine at $ 69 is a deal! One day, My girlfriend told me that she bought the voucher for this place from Groupon and I was being little skeptical about this place as I saw many of other reviewer wrote negative reviews, especially about their bad services. Since she already bought the voucher and I didn’t see many reviews talking negative on their foods, we decided to take a chance on this location. It wasn’t very hard to make a reservation yet it wasn’t so easy. I had to make a reservation a week in advance to get a table at dinner time on Friday. They said they don’t accept a reservation via Opentable when you have the voucher from Groupon. Place is bit small space but they got around 20 tables, that said you need to expect to hear everything what your next table is talking about. It wasn’t crowded that much at 7PM thou. I was prepared for bad services as many other reviewer mentioned about it — yet I actually found them very friendly. I guess they might have worked out after lots of complaint, or I could be lucky if only friendly staffs were on duty on the day I went to spot. I didn’t not find any of their staff being rude when we dining there. They allow you to choose any bottle of wine cost $ 39 from their menu, and let you choose 1 appetizer, 1 entrée, and 1 desert. They also offered me to trade my appetizer when I told them that it was bit salty — so they were pretty generous even when you’re there with Groupon deal. For food quality, I didn’t really like it except hanger steak and french onion soup. Steak was grilled nicely and onion soup was tasty — It wasn’t amazing thou. Brandade de Morue was appetizer that I ordered and I found it really salty. Also entrée that my girlfriend ordered was Linguines a’ l’ Encre de Seiche which was little boring despite lots of seafood were cooked together. We spent about 2 hours and there was no rush at all. Spent less than $ 100 including tip+tax so we were pretty satisfied with our food and services as we enjoyed our time there. I won’t be craving for any of their food in future but I could come back when there is another deal pops up for this location.

Came here for dinner on a weekday night and I thought overall for the VALUE of the groupon it was an amazing deal… this is New York people, all restaurants are pretty expensive! I got a bottle of red wine(menu priced at $ 39), 2 appetizers, 2 entrees and 2 desserts… I’m pretty sure I also used a 20% off promo code when I bought this weeks ago. For a starter I got the fried goat cheese balls and my friend got the spicy sausages… even though they were small portions, they packed a lot of flavor and were both very good! For my main dish I got the Onglet Grille which was the grilled hanger steak with a mustard sauce and french fries. The steak was very thin sliced but delicious in the sauce. I ordered a side of mashed potatoes which were also good but nothing special and at $ 7 a side(yikes!) I was expecting a little more. For dessert, I got the lemon tart with limón sorbet… was delicious. When the bill came, I paid less than the normal price of this meal for the groupon but tipped on the full price. Service was great and the atmosphere was nice. Would definitely come back for another special deal, otherwise at full price, there are plenty of other options in the city to try.

Came here on Saturday, 2⁄6 for date night to celebrate my birthday and got a bangin’ deal(Thanks Groupon). If you’re going, be sure to make reservations as the place gets booked up quickly. Upon arrival we were seated immediately and the hostess took our coats. The place is very small and quaint with dim lighting and tables close together. The waiter was the cutest lil thang! We forgot to get his name but he was so charming and kept us laughing every time he came to check on us. He even recommended a good Pinot Noir which I’m not usually a fan of. I ordered the french onion soup, steak and frites and crème brûlée. All were absolutely delicious and talk about a perfectly medium steak!!! YAAAAASSSSSGAWD! I love that the frites appeared hand cut as well. The french onion soup was cooked to perfection and I didn’t expect anything less! An absolute standout to our meal was the additional side we ordered — sautéed mushrooms. I swear on my life I have NEVER enjoyed mushrooms this much before EVERRRRRRRRR. If you’re mushroom fan do NOT skip out before trying them. The crème brûlée again delish with the top perfectly crisp and served at the perfect temperature, almost room but slightly cool. I wish I could’ve cleaned my plate but I did what I could. Amazing little spot and I hope they are on groupon still when we return because we definitely will go back! Merci Chez Jacqueline & staff!

Our delightful night was ruined by a very rude female server who kept demanding we pay extra after we had already settled our bill with our so very nice and charming male server. We came in with a Groupon and we clearly specified it at the beginning, the server went and checked, then came and took out orders. We enjoyed our appetizers, steak entrees fell short, but were still enjoyable. I went with my charming server’s recommendation and got the Apple tarte for dessert which I loved. Once we were done we settled our bill and left a very generous tip for our kind server. I stepped out to the restroom, and then came back to find myself being attacked by another server saying that I owed more money bc my Groupon had expired.(I explained to her that I had called to make my reservation and cleared that it would be expired by the time I came by, they said it didn’t matter. Once I sat down i again showed my voucher to my server, he enquired and we moved to make a great experience.) She went as far as threatening me saying that either i pay or my server had to pay my bill. I told her she was being very unprofessional and that we had a great night and now will never come back after she ruined our experience at the end. It only took her unprofessional involvement in our night and now we both hate this place. We felt so sorry for our server and hope he finds a much better place to work at because he’s the best thing this place had to offer.

My husband and and I had a wonderful time at Chez Jacqueline. We had the Groupon, which is a phenomenal deal, you save yourself about $ 100! The restaurant itself is cozy and ambient. It does indeed look like a village restaurant somewhere in France. My husband is from France so we had a lot to compare to. The server spoke to us in French and many of the other staff members spoke French as well. We were in for a nice relaxing evening, so there was no rush on service for us, although I think many people might think the service is a bit slow. The wine was delicious. AND they are not by the table every other sip to refill your glass. They allowed us to pour and enjoy at our own rate. BIGPLUS for us!!! The food was delicious. The artichoke appetizer!!! So good!!! Duck was delicious, cassoulet was delicious. Tarte au citron, so delicious. We really enjoyed everything. It was overall a fantastic dining experience. We will definitely return.

Maybe I came here on an off night, but my meal was less than spectacular and the service was terrible. It was a Sunday night and I had reservations, the restaurant was pretty empty and I also had a groupon to use. We were seated right away and given some bread and olive oil which was delicious. We waited about 15, almost 20 minutes until a server came to take our order. It seemed like there was only 1 person working all of the tables in the restaurant. Onto the food… we started with the stuffed mushrooms which I had read were great … but they were lacking any flavor watsoever. The mussles were good, the sauce which they were cooked in was very flavorful, and the brussel sprouts were ok. For the mains we had the hangar steak which needed salt BAD, and I am one to never salt ANYTHING. The seafood stew also needed salt REALLYBAD… not sure if maybe they had a new chef or something but this meal lacked any flavor. Last but not least the artichoke ravoil was pretty good. The only highlight of the meal for me was dessert because the chocolate flourless cake was delicious and so was the apple tart. We asked for our check about 3 times, and waited almost 30 minutes until it finally arrived. I would not be back any time soon, but based on the other reviews maybe it was an off night or a new chef?

Had such a lovely dinner here with my boyfriend on Sunday night. We both ordered an appetizer he got the calamari and I got the goat cheese. They were both delicious. The calamari came in some sort of lemony sauce and was a little salted. The goat cheese was fried and came with some tomato sauce. Loved it! He ordered the duck for his entrée and I got the steak and frites. The steak was nicely cooked and paired nicely with the fries. we ends our dinner with crime brûlée and apple tart. My boyfriend thought the apple tart tasted like baby food but the crème brûlée was so good! Highly recommend this place and the service was great.

Such a delight. Charming ambiance and décor. Fabulous dinner music. Jordan was our waiter and he really knew the menu — everything he recommended was fabulous. Delicious food, the reason we love crème brûlée– if you want French cuisine from Nice — this is THE place!

Had cassoulet with soup starter. Both were excellent and the Languedocian Pinot noir was a nice accompaniment, but the non-baguette with olive oil wasn’t very authentic. And why Pellegrino water, no Perrier? I’m happy to say that the service was outstanding. I dined alone at the bar and felt very welcomed and comfortable.

My friend and I got a Groupon for this place since we’ve wanted to have a French meal for a while. The deal was three courses for each of 2 people(one appetizer, one main dish, and a dessert) and one bottle of wine for the table. It was an absolutely amazing deal when viewing the actual prices of everything on the menu. To start, you get a basket of warm, crispy, delicious bread with herbed oil. We split mussels in white wine sauce and stuffed mushrooms for our appetizer. The mushrooms were amazing, the mussels were pretty good, though I’ve had better. I had the roasted chicken for my main plate which was amazing. I literally left nothing behind on the plate except for extra sauce. The desserts were fantastic as well. My friend and I split the chocolate cake and the apple tart. If I could eat these desserts every day, I’d be a very happy person. The atmosphere was beautiful and it smells great in there. The only thing is that I couldn’t tell if our waiter was actually annoyed with us or if he was just joking around. My friend arrived about 15 minutes after I did, so we caught up a little and took a bit longer to decide what we wanted. He acted annoyed when we said we weren’t ready, but I couldn’t tell if he was trying to be funny or if he was actually inconvenienced. He was nice through the rest of the meal though, and regardless of that one little quirk, I would absolutely return.

Chez Jacqueline absolutely deserves a round of applause. take a second CJ… Pat yourself on the back, and your chefs back. This restaurant is up on groupon from time to time, so I decided to give it a shot due to pretty good reviews on Unilocal and a friends recommendation. Made a reservation on Opentable and ventured out for a early dinner with my lady. I knew exactly where it was because I used to hang out on Macdougal quite a bit in my younger college days, so directions were not necessary. But if you need help finding this place, its right off the corner of Houston and MacDougal. With drop lighting outside it did kind of look corny with them up so early in the year, and or maybe never taken down from years before, i don’t really know or care much. The restaurant itself doesn’t have much sex appeal. As u enter there is a very dim, gloomy bar and tables to your immediate right, mostly wooden. The one that stood out was the long center table, probably seats 10 – 15 people comfortably. Birthday ideas for those out there looking. Anywho, there was no hostess to greet us, but it took a server to approach us and seat us. The restaurant was 85% empty with a few older couples dining, I started to get concerned for a second there. Can it be that this place really isn’t any good and is strictly surviving on discounted diners. Well, lets not jump to conclusion right away now, readers. Lets start what the rave is all about. The bread and Olive oil… stupendous! we could stop picking until the entire loaf was gone. We ordered the escargot and the cod with potatoes appetizer. The escargot was phenomenal in the au jus with sliced asparagus and tomato pieces in the sauce. Not a huge portion, but it was heaven. we requested another loaf to finish the sauce it was in… sorry for hogging all of it babe ;). The cod was alright, slightly on the oily side, but it is cod, so i guess that expected. Then came the entrees. Asparagus ravioli and a hanger steak w pom fritti. My goodness was it was delicious. Small disclaimer, our food did not come out pipping hot, and that was slightly strange to me. but moving along. The steak was cooked to a perfect Med-rare and the pom fritt was fresh and crispy, even my date said they tasted like they were just cut. We were actually a bit worried after the apps that there wouldn’t be enough food and we would leave hungry, till the ravioli came. SEVEN or so, Index card sized, asparagus stuff ravioli left my taste buds very very pleased. Oh and order the mushroom side dish, won’t regret it. Now the service was nothing special and even sub par, but i didn’t care much for it as I was sharing great food with my nice big glass of Cote de Rhone. I say in all this place gets 4 solid stars and I will return for more. BTW the bread was a charred loaf, not the cheap baguette they brought out later on in the meal. Ask for the good stuff.

I had such a great dinner with my guy here! It’s really the perfect place for an intimate dinner. So if you wanna impress this is a nice place to take a date. We came with a groupon deal with was 65 for a bottle of wine, 2 appetizers, entrees and desert!!! Excellent deal! We came on a Friday night the restaurant was a bit packed but still cozy. Our waiter was really great and very accommodating! The owner even spoke with us as we left and made sure we had a great time which we did! Appetizers: We had the foie gras and the duck rillets — my foie gras was delicious it had a nice Berry sauce that cut the fat with the perfect sweetness and acidity. Entrees: I had the squid ink pasta, boyfriend had the duck…(Notice a trend) I loved my pasta it was sautéed in a delicious sauce with a creamy tomato flavor and the seafood was cooked well. Desert: We chomped on the apple tart and the chocolate cake… And I do mean chomped… We left both plates clean. To top the night off our bill came to 14 dollars! The groupon was well worth it and we had such an amazing dining experience. Highly recommend it!

We came here with the Groupon which is easily the best option. For $ 69, we had the option of picking two appetizers, entrees and desserts, as well as a bottle of wine. The overall check would’ve been approximately $ 140, sans tip. The service was pleasant and courteous. For appetizers we had goat cheese croquettes and an onion tart. The goat cheese serving was somewhat small, only four small balls, but creamy and tasty. The onion tart was easy to fall apart but satisfying. Moving on to the entrees, we had the artichoke ravioli and squid ink pasta. The raviolis were run of the mill, not bad but definitely nothing to write home about and somewhat on the overcooked side. The pasta was served with mussels, scallops, calamari and shrimp, all in fair portions. Finally, for dessert we had the lemon tart and crème brûlée. The lemon tart was good however the crust had too much egg which overpowered the lemon. The crème brûlée was also good. A tip for groupon-ers. Be sure to take cash with you to cover the tax and tip. There is a $ 20 dollar minimum on card(pre-tip) and tax was only $ 6.12. Overall, service was pleasant and the food was above average. I can see why some people will have a problem with the seat spacing, which is somewhat cozy, but not different from several other restaurants in the area from my experience.
