Black Shack Burger

One of the best gourmet burger places in the city. If you aren’t already wise to it, look up the secret menu on your phone to get into the really good stuff. Order the fries, some of the best in the city and Neapolitan milk shake was an awesome touch.
If you really want to round out the binge, order an ice cream sandwich on freshly baked cookies. Killer good.

This was my first visit to Black Shack. It was a Saturday at 11:30am. I had come here earlier in the summer at a later time but then walked out since it was filled to capacity but this time I was the only customer before a group came in soon after I did. I ordered the burgers and took my seat at the counter at the window. Brittany kindly brought the food all the way to me. I enjoyed my Black Shack burger and my Oaxaca burger as well as my sweet potato fries while listening to hip-​hop hits and a very lengthy Michael Jackson compilation track. The Black Shack burger was one of the best I’ve ever had. Then I had the Oaxaca burger which was even better. The burgers are very well put together with no large portions slipping out. The burger size is smaller but not too small so I’m gad I bought two.

Ein echter Geheimtipp. Die Burger sind wirklich absolut klasse. Dazu wird man super beraten und auch die Atmosphäre ist für einen Fast Food Geschäft doch echt gemütlich.

Your food will take forever to arrive, if/​when it gets there it will be cold, and is mediocre to begin with. But whatever you do don’t call to find out where your food is, I tried that once after over an hour — was perfectly courteous — and was met with a flippant comment. I’ve given them a few opportunities now, but never again.

I was so impressed with the young gentleman that was working there today! He was an adorable young man with a denim button down and hat to the side. He treated the restaurant like it was his, so I asked him if the black shack was his business! He said no but that is how you should treat every job! As an operations manager for a company I know how hard that attitude is to find. You can teach many skills but you can never teach that attitude. That makes him so valuable to any business. If you read this young man, realize how rare your personality and work ethic is and shoot for the stars because you will reach them! Thank you for an exceptional experience and giving me hope! Black shack; management give him a raise!

Ok place for a quick burger where you can sit down. Burger was ok, not great,
. Given the price, not a large portion and no where near as good as a shake shake burger. Just no lines…

the cheeseburger w/​bacon at $ 10 is a great price. But it’s on the smaller size. If you are really hungry, you’ll need two and a side. The meat is okay. I wasn’t impressed — but it was not horrible. Salads are overpriced. At $ 20 total for a small salad and a small burger; not sure it was worth it. It has a cute seating area. I ordered thru Unilocal and it was quick, picked up w/​in 20 mins.

We ordered two black shack burgers and fries and they were great. One of the best burgers in the city. The man that took our order seemed somewhat annoyed, not just with us but other customers as well. Maybe he was just having an off day.

Pretty good burgers, tad on the greasy side but definitely worth a shot. The onion rings were so good I ate the entire basket against my better judgement…

I had the Black Shack Burger and French Fries for lunch. The burger was pretty average and the fries were too salty. But hey, at least they have some nice décor to distract you from all of that.
When comparing to other burger places in Manhattan, this place just isn’t worth it: take your money elsewhere.

I’m always in search of a good burger spot with beef alternatives… But this wasn’t one. The turkey burger was perfectly formed circular patty which makes me thing it was a frozen, not fresh, burger. The Cajun fries had delicious seasoning but were stale. With Bareburger a nearby option I probably will not return.

For me burger and fries are not something I’d get my ‘foodie on’ for, a throw away food category to eat in a hurry, or at a bar, or similar places serves heat ‘n eat food.
Eating the burgers, fries, and sodas at black shake is a taste experience that I love!
The retro ambiance fits the retro soda choices. I loved the (expensive) holy mole burger and I can’t think of a place that explores burger taste with creative new menu items.
This place is a no-​brainier to try, or be a regular.

I order here from time to time, I ate there once.
I love that the burgers aren’t massive, but just big enough to fill you. Plus who doesn’t love shoe string fries? And the onion rings, that’s a must.
I usually go for the classic cheeseburger, but they have vegetarian option which intrigue me… My next time there I’ll try that. (also they have milk shakes).

I recommend the western burger for a slammin’ meal! Nice atmosphere and friendly staff. I’ll definitely eat here again! Thank you!

I had the Black Shack burger and sweet potato fries. Burger was good. Fries were ok. I like how they keep moving cleaning and stocking. Nice place for lunch.

FYIs for those ordering remotely:
1. Prices on Seamless/​Grubhub were consistently more than the Black Shack site — not sure if they raised prices and didn’t update their site, or they just charge more for those not ordering in person.
2. Seamless also uselessly has the same description for each burger («All Burgers are ground for us, never frozen, using 100% USDA approved grain and grass fed ground chuck. Our Turkey burgers are made with 100% white meat.»).
3. Seamless lacks a medium rare option* (just medium and well).
4. You cannot opt to tip with cash for pickup, meaning you need to click tip with CC and then enter $ 0.00.
5. Seamless coupon for «Free Chocolate Pudding dessert with any purchase of $ 20 or more!!».
So…a generous 3:
The Steak House Burger Medium («medium rare if possible, please (if not, no need to call, just make it medium)» $ 7.75 tasted mostly of onions and the tasty creamed spinach, and unfortunately the patty was a good ways beyond medium*, which is an extra shame given my request above (which they didn’t acknowledge when I arrived either).
Two of the top 3 review mentions were sodas (and I had a $ 10 minimum to redeem a Seamless promo code), so had to spring for the Fountain Drink Bosco Chocolate Soda $ 2.25 (basically an egg cream), even if it meant no refills at said fountain for a pickup, which is a shame since they have some throwback or otherwise esoteric options on tap.

So I kind of want to give this place a 2.5. I really wish you could give halfs. They aren’t terrible for a 2, but I don’t think its exactly good either. I’m going with 3, just because they made an effort to offer a vegetarian option that wasn’t just cheese.
I got a western tofu burger. Easy sauce and easy pickles… but when I got home, the burger and onions were socked in the sauce. to the point that the bread was just red goo. There was maybe 15 pickles on my one little burger. Less a big deal, I can just pull them off. But its wasteful. The tofu, while I’m excited to find a place that has tofu, it had a chewy, off texture. Tasted kind of like liquid smoke if you like that flavor. And it had some of the charcoal stuck to it from the grill.
it’s not bad per say. but it was not made to how I ordered. All I could taste was BBQ sauce, which I don’t really like. And outside of the tofu, it offered no nutritional value.

The place looks a bit like a bar and a bit like those cafeteria-​type places where you order food at when you go to Epcot Center. The vibe is totally laid back! They play awesome music — I thought it was my ipod — The Strokes, The Killers, Spoon, etc.
They also have lots of alcoholic options in cans.
I ordered the Western Burger with cheese and it was honestly one of the best burgers I have had almost anywhere!
I will definitely return because it’s right near my job.

Just around the corner from our hotel in Murray Hill we found Black Shack Burger for a late dinner during our recent stay in NYC. Black Shack sits a half story underground and it really has a basement feel to it. The somewhat limited menu is posted above the ordering counter. After placing your order you can choose from a dozen or so booths and tables and your food will be delivered when it is ready.
I went with the western chicken sandwich with crispy onions, pickles, and BBQ sauce ($ 7). The chicken was cooked perfectly and the toppings went well together. The BBQ sauce was especially good and at least appeared to be made from scratch.
My wife tried the special of the day, pulled pork sandwich. This was really good and came loaded with coleslaw just the way I like it. The pork was well cooked and again the sauce was very nice. We also shared an order of fries ($ 2.50) and onion rings ($ 3). The onion rings were better than the fries, which I think should be skipped. Maybe the sweet potato fries would be a better choice?
There is no special kids menu so our two youngins split one regular hamburger and both seemed to enjoy it ($ 6.25). They liked that it wasn’t too thick and was cooked to a perfect medium temperature. Overall we had a nice dinner at Black Shack Burger.

Beef burger here is pathetic. It’s thin, dry, overcooked, and not flavorful at all. I probably had 1 teaspoon of BBQ sauce on my patty and wasn’t pleased. The portion itself was small, like the size of my palm. I originally asked for my burger to be wrapped in lettuce, but they couldn’t do that. Wouldn’t recommend the beef burger.
The sweet potato fries were good, though. Friend said the chicken was good.
Eat those.

Went here for lunch with some coworkers and got the Chicken Sandwich for about $ 8.
Good tasting sandwich but nothing above the norm. I do love how they stack the chicken on in two or even three layers. I’m a fiend for protein, so obviously this made me happy. I also appreciate how clean this was (not greasy).
This place is known for their burgers so will try that next time. Just wanted to be a little healthier on my first visit.

Sehr schöner Burger Geheimtipp in New York auf der Lexington Avenue. Die Burger sind amerikansich lecker, man kann nach Gargrad bestellen, also auch Medium oder Well Done. Der Laden an sich sitzt etwa 1 Meter tiefer als die Straßenoberfläche, das hat einen eigenen Charme. Innen ist es sauber und aufgeräumt.
Der Burger ist nicht übermässig groß. Aber lecker.
Es gibt eine Bseonderheit die man probieren sollte:
Pommes-​Frittes aus der roten Süßkartoffel. Das ist ein sehr interessanter Geschmack!
Interessant ist die Auswahl der Biersorten, dort sind auch Exoten aus Indien und Taiwan dabei.
Abzüge gibt es aus meiner sicht nur beim Preis, es ist am oberen ende der Skala. Aber zum Essen und gemütlich sitzen empfehlenswert!
