Well here’s the good news… beautiful décor and very good food. The bad news, and it’s very bad, is the overall service. Our waiter was horrendous. He only came to our table after 20 minutes of our sitting and waiting. At 30 minutes we finally received water. Took over 45 minutes to get our meals. Had to ask for everything two or three times(waited 30 minutes for a coffee and be brought bread to our table after the meal, saying he forgot). We will go back and try again. If we get better service I would give 4 stars.

When you decide that it’s your day to be surrounded by incredible décor, spectacular service and a meal filled with creative culinary delights — Black Barn is an absolute must. Chef John is nothing short of brilliant and so passionate about making meals that will keep you yearning for more. From the moment we sat down, Cameo welcomed us, made us feel at home and guided us to an amazing meal. From the Octopus appetizer, the Crispy Duck, the Amish Chicken which was infused with the perfect blend of rosemary, thyme and garlic with every bite cooked to perfection, unique wine pairing and our Lemon Thyme Pot de Crème desert that was simply heavenly. Can’t wait to our next Black Barn experience and to hear about yours. Thank you Cameo and Chef John. Andrew & Donna from Arizona

Very nice room, about 15 seats at the bar. Three taps plus maybe ten beers in bottles. Bartender was spot on. Limited food menu but a nice selection. Music this afternoon sounded like BB King. I might try them for lunch or brunch. I see that they have fried chicken as part of the brunch menu.

This is a beautiful and large space on the north side of Madison Sq Park. Bypass the tavern in the front and opt for the main dining area in the back. There are varied options, all delicious. Service is attentive. It’s still relatively new so you can get reservations pretty easily. The only drawback is the price… about 25−30% higher than the equivalent quality restaurant in Brooklyn.

Came in, restaurant buzzing. Seated almost immediately. Dining room was way bigger than expected. Dress was business casual. Coming from LA-that was nice. Menu was small, exciting, and well organized. Great for an adventurous eater. May be good to share. On the expensive side, but well worth it. Had the porcetta with a salsa verde and broccoli rabe. Fatty meaty spicy fresh earthy well rounded. Well seasoned. Would eat again. Tables a bit close together. Good service. Didn’t bother us. Bread basket had a tardy selection of which I wish I tried each type. Super stoked on this place-great first meal in NYC.

Black Barn brunch is quite the nice experience. Walking in you immediately feel the rustic vibe of the place, strewn with wooden beams, high ceilings, an expansive seating area, and a three piece guitar crew. Never did I think eating in a barn could be elegant, but it kinda was(maybe black barns differ). Anyway, see menu suggestions below… Winners: Egg yolk-Ricotta filled Raviolo(best of show) Vegetable goat cheese focaccia with poached eggs Eggs Benny Double Black(cold brew & scotch) and our waiter, who wasn’t insulted when we asked if he worked seasonally at the Ren Faire(to be fair, he really did look like the one of the knights). Skip: the Farmers Omelet, not bc it’s bad, but bc there is just so much better on the menu. Overall, the solid brunch came out to $ 200, which isn’t that bad considering the 2 bottles of bubbly ordered(among other drinks). If I ever choose to respect myself and turn away the usual AYCD brunch options, Black Barn is high on the list

Four of us went to dinner at 6:30 last night. First cant sit till all of the party has arrived… I really dislike that!!! Let the party sit and buy a cocktail.etc.poor business move! Second sitting in the booth very uncomfortable! Drinks just ok not great. Third ordered Appetizers which arrived very fast and were good. But Entrees took 20 minutes or more to arrive and Chicken was Dry, Rib Eye big but had no flavor, Duck so fatty and could not be cut easily, and Sea Bass was just OK!!! Had no dessert $ 380 is pricey for all the hype and bad service and food!!! Won’t be returning!

Great wine list, nice food offerings. Their menu is a little weird as it lists«fish» as a meatless item, which caused us to ask the server if it was really fish or. I guess faux fish(it was really fish). Great place to stop for lunch during the week when the weather is nice to sit outside. Service is very good, prompt without being annoying.

Had drinks and one dish here for my friend’s casual drop-by birthday and had to Unilocal though I haven’t eaten much there. All the food, however, looked great as it was being shuttled to nearby bar tables. There are three menus: a bar/pub one with pizza, a couple burgers, salads, oysters, and cheese, a bistro version, and a fancier more composed menu. The wine list is fairly priced by the glass. My 13 Malbec was good and the pour nice. But the roasted cauliflower(which I expected to be just a «steak» rather than a large entrée-sized salad) blew my mind. Atop raita(Indian yogurt concoction), the salad was full of cucumbers, pears, and other veggies. DELICIOUS vegetarian entrée though they call it a starter. I can’t wait to go back and try other food. It’s also spacious, a great and casual lounge. At 10:15PM on a Saturday, it was not crowded and a perfect place to sit with a larger group. Very impressive. Also, because I walked the wrong way on 26th, I passed something I’d never seen before: Upland. I live uptown and usually not in Flatiron up this far(usually low 20s). It is magical – and I’ve not even seen the menu. When I asked my sommelier/foodie friend about it his eyes widened and he nodded approvingly. I take this as a good sign and will try it soon.

I had dinner at the Black Barn on a business trip. It was the perfect place to relax after a long day. Excellent location in Flatiron and the décor was very nice with a couch and coffee table type setting. Scallops were killer. Given the farm theme I wish they had more salads on the menu, but everything came out great and the waitstaff was warm and helpful. Definitely worth a trip back!

Came here for brunch today and was pleasantly surprised by how welcoming yet humongous Black Barn was. Don’t be fool by the small(but very large for what it is) waiting area. After passing a short hallway, you enter what feels like a modern day hogwarts hall. Large wooden panels and struct in the middle add a nice«barN’ touch to the place. A rusted tractor seat was hanging over our wooden tables. Table setting, particularly the plates, was unique and whimsical. The service was great and our server patiently walked us through all the menu items, which all looked promising. My friends and I decidde to split a few dishes. We also received complimentary chocolate croissants which were some of the best chocolate croissants, I’ve had – flaky, buttery, and semisweet. Fried Chicken Parmesan-Rosemary Waffle with vermont maple butter sauce($ 19) is no true southern fried chicken, but it was good. I much prefer regular maple syrup over the concocted vermont maple butter sauce, which was super runny and just made the wffle soggy. Separately, the waffle and the chicken were prepared really well. Must better spin on Chicken N Waffles than, say, Vandal. Grilled burger with fried egg, roasted tomato, pancetta, fontina romesco sauce and a side of marsean fried($ 20) stole the show. I had the patty served rare. The meat was SOOOOOJUICY. Definitely up there in one of the best burgers I’ve ever had. Definitely. I think I must have eaten the whole thing under a minute because I could not stop stuffing my face with it. Fried egg didn’t make much of a difference but the pancetta really did. Bun was excellent – slightly toasty and still warm. Fries were okay, not that crispy. Merquez(lamb) Sausace with Chipea Pancakes, poached egg, and eggplant caponata($ 18). I applaud Black Barn immenesly for take big risks with dishes. Unfortunately, while the lamb sausage component was really gamey, flavorful, and good, overall the dish was just awful. Chickpea pancake had really weird aftertaste and became very soggy evry quickly. There was ony 3 tiny, tiny pieces of eggplant, so that didn’t add anything, and and the poached egg texture and aesthetic didn’t work at all with the weird stuff it was sitting on. Still, I would recommend this restaurant for its interesting menu, food quality, and great ambiance(they had live music playing at the entrance today too)!

So let me say the portions are very small. Even for sharing if your a group of 3 or 4. We ordered the chicken wings(tiniest things I’ve ever seen, like they were lollipoped), the rib from the Tavern menu, the mushroom toast, the charcrutarie, the fries first. The best thing was the charcrutarie! Amazing cuts and flavors… The mushroom toast was very good too. We were still hungry so order the chicken pot pie, and chicharones. The pot pie was OK, chicharones were tasty. Only blown away with the charcrutarie. I would only come back for that. Great atmosphere, food good… Very pricey… I mean 26 bucks for cauliflower?

Great atmosphere, good bartenders, great spot in the Flat Iron District, came here after seeing the movie ‘how to be single’ her apartment scenes were filmed in my apartment in Brooklyn, it was kind of eerie seeing it on the big screen, but the Black Barn has a really big dining area, a very long bar and a lot of charm going for it. We know that the menu selections were created by chef John Doherty and it’s not an extensive menu it’s simple and works I got the BBQ Beef Ribs and we’re going to pair that with something from the Bronx Brewery because were in New York! The ribs were great the sauce could have been more worcestershire flavor-ish than bbq and there was a lot of it on the plate it won’t disappoint! The Black Barn is at the northern tip of Madison Square Park go dine and walk around that park for a little bit!

Was in NYC for a short weekend with my mom and ate here our first night. The look of the restaurant is awesome. The wood, the wine room and private areas were great. There was a great vibe at the bar. The host staff was really friendly. Let’s talk about the food though! I had the Amish chicken with ricotta gnocchi. Sooo good! Seasoned well and a great portion size. My mom had the butternut squash ravioli and it was delish. We really loved the meal. The drinks were ok too. Would recommend to friends.

A farmhouse in the middle of Manhattan might appear out of the ordinary, but that’s exactly what Black Barn aims to do — from the rustic yet chic interior modeled after country barn houses in the Hamptons to the quality of its mouthwatering food that just begs for more. Black Barn, a farm-to-table restaurant located across from Madison Square Park, has been serving modern American cuisine since it open in September 2015. Complimentary Bread Basket(FREE!) The complimentary bread basket contained a selection of warm cheese rolls, crusty sourdough, and thin breadsticks. The breads were complemented by a ramekin filled with soft cube of butter, garlic cloves, and olive oil with a bit of vinegar. Roasted Sweet Potato($ 23) A few minutes into nibbling on the breads, we received the first appetizer, Roasted Sweet Potatoes. This colorful assortment of vegetable dish included hen of the wood, lentils, pears, and roasted sweet potatoes rubbed with spices, which are all tossed in savory black truffle vinaigrette. The seasonal dish was accompanied by an amuse bouche of puff pastry filled with refreshing goat cheese. Tarentaise Cheese Soufflé($ 17) Another highlight from the appetizer menu was Tarentaise Cheese Soufflé. Baked and served in a mini crock pot, the soufflé flaunted crusty, golden-brown top and fluffy, soft center that had been moistened by speck-chive cream. A spoon was an absolute necessity to scoop up all intense, rich cheese in the center. Amish Chicken($ 26) While a chicken entrée may be viewed as a bit common, if not plebeian, the Amish Chicken at Black Barn was anything but ordinary. The flavorful, juicy chicken with crispy skin laid beautifully atop a bed of ricotta gnocchi, winter vegetables, grapes, and a sprinkle of parmesan. The dish had a wide variety of textures — from the fluffiness of the gnocchi to the tenderness of the chicken. Millbrook Venison Saddle($ 38) Cooked perfectly medium rare, the Millbrook Venison Saddle was another entrée that delight my appetite. In addition to the tender slices of venison, the dish featured barbajuan — crispy tortelloni filled with shoulder meat — along with braised red cabbage, kale, and empire apple. The juxtaposition of sweetness from the apple and the savoriness of the meat was quite unique. Apple Cider Doughnut($ 11) The Apple Cider Doughnut made me long for autumn. While small in size, these mini, dense doughnuts are powdered with plenty of sweet sugar and packed so much flavor. The bourbon eggnog dipping sauce on the side was better than any glaze I have had before. Chocolate Soufflé($ 11) Finally, the Chocolate Soufflé, which took about 15 minutes to bake, was all worth the wait. Gently scoop the crispy top — dusted with powder sugar — with a tablespoon to pour the sweet vanilla sauce into the center. The warm cake blended perfectly with the rich vanilla sauce to create melt-in-your-mouth chocolate cake that I will be dreaming about for months to come.

This had been on my list for a while, and I finally got a reservation for a Friday night. After checking a lot of the reviews, my thought was that this was going to be far more casual than the space’s previous inhabitant, SD26. However, after entering the tavern area, I realized how modern and chic everything was. Sure, there was the whole barn aspect of the décor, but holy cow, this place was scene-y as can be. A lot of hyper-attractive people lounging, with the dining rooms in the back. We went for the main dining room, rather the chef’s tasting menu. Our table wasn’t ready at first, so we got a couple beers at the bar. They have just about no drafts, but quite a few bottles to select from, so it ain’t so bad. After about 15 minutes, we were seated pretty promptly. We went with a few small plates and one main dish, since we wanted to try as much as we could. We started with the bone marrow and white pizza with prosciutto and arugula. Bone marrow wasn’t really flavorful, which was odd. The white pizza was delicious, but it didn’t seem like it was anything that we couldn’t get anywhere else. However, the complimentary bread that came out was outstanding. We got some breadsticks, sourdough, and some really good brioche with softened butter. Bread game strong. After that, we went with the side of pumpkin gnocchi and the beef ribs. The gnocchi was excellent and creamy, and the ribs were fall off the bone. I kinda wish they had actual regular fries instead of potato sticks, however. Just a personal preference. In all, the food was delicious and we were very much satisfied even though we didn’t get 2 entrees. Most of the time, I’ll say something is on the more expensive side, but I actually do find Black Barn to be legitimately overpriced. The two beef ribs, albeit large ones, were $ 42, which I don’t think is a good value. That being said, the quality of everything was actually all very good, so I guess I can’t complain too much. Service was fine and attentive, although our waiter was a little overbearing, yet aloof when taking our order, which I didn’t much care for. Nonetheless, it wasn’t enough to make any lasting impact on our meal, so it’s forgivable. This is more like a 3.5 stars because of the less-than-ideal value, but I’ll round up because the quality of the food was good, and the place in general is pretty hip, perfect for young whippersnappers. I don’t know if I’ll be back anytime soon for the main dining room, but I’m curious to try the tasting menu in the near future.

I was excited to try out this new restaurant that is in place of the former SD26. The space is still very pretty — we sat in one of the side rooms that are apparently usually used for private parties. Huge table with plenty of space. Pretty refreshing from your average New York restaurant where you’re on top of each other. For food, you must get the white pizza, the butternut squash ravioli, and the bread pudding!!! Scallops were delicious but were only 3 pieces for an entrée– this was quite small. Ribs were just okay. Pumpkin gnocchi was a good value — you get a bunch and it’s only a side dish. Maine lobster salad was a bit disappointing. Overall, we had a nice time and would recommend to someone if they’re in the area.

Rustic Modern //subtle details Farm Fresh Local Artisanal American Fare Came here to visit a friend to see their new place of work… was pleasantly surprised and excited for them when I walked in. It seems like everything someone working in the industry would want in a restaurant. The chef/owner came from a top NYC hotel, and clearly has poured his heart and his expertise into every inch of this restaurant. Interior: Taking a walk around each room was beautiful and inviting. Clean, and filled with intricate details. The lounge in the front serves both the bar and the formal dining menu. The formal dining area has a mixture of wood table tops cozy seating, and gorgeous custom designed leather chairs. With dim lights during dinner, custom designed table settings, a wine room, private dining rooms, and a barn in the middle this is one of the most elegant modern rustic spaces in New York City. Event Space: There was a beautiful event space upstairs with windows that spanned across the length of the dining room. Hard woods and rustic modern through out. The floor to ceiling windows looked down on the formal dining room and the top of the barn. Private Dining: In the basement there is a wine cellar with a long table perfect for a private dinner for business or family and friends. Thankfully the food was equally as creative, interesting, and each dish we tried was delicious. Gnosh: The roasted kale salad with acorn butternut squash was good. If I had not had lunch earlier I would have gone for the Maine Lobster salad… And several other starters. The Buttermilk dressing on the kale was nice and light. I tend to ask for dressing on the side but somehow forgot and thankfully this dish was well balanced as we’re all of the other item we ordered. The bone marrow with Manila clams was mouthwatering. Herb crusted with lemon and shallot reduction, perfectly executed. If you’re craving savory this is a great dish not to miss. The butternut squash ravioli was one of the most spectacular butter nut squash ravioli I have ever had … Instead of being flat, the ravioli look like a present. Wrapped perfectly for the winter months. If you are vegan or vegetarian this is a great dish to order you won’t be disappointed. My friend had the BBQ beef ribs with crispy shoe string fries which were delicious. The spicy bread sticks I wanted to take home with me they were not too spicy and perfectly baked. Dessert: Home made sorbets are to die for, and so are the delicious fresh donuts. Soft and warm, cooked to order, and certainly not too big. Do not miss dessert, it’s delicious! Whether a date, private event, or business dinner, you really cannot go wrong choosing Black Barn. Looking forward to coming back and updating this review. The Scene: Modern, Rustic, Farm Fresh Destination Rating: 8 Date Rating: 9 Hob Nob Potential: 6 Note: meat eater, vegetarian or vegan there really is something for everyone here. 3.25 stars I love the ambiance here, but the food could use some improvement. I loved the service here and also enjoyed the wine list. Fig pizza — I guess I didn’t read the description but this also came with slices of pork and I don’t eat pork. I had to pick those pieces off. The pizza was just OK. I wouldn’t order this again. Beef ribs — good but very heavy Swordfish — mediocre/a bit overcooked; I wouldn’t order this again.
