Saw slices the first time I came over for water(Poland Spring = $ 1.50, booo) and an over-ripe banana(50 cents, not bad). So I came back one late night, ordered a pepperoni slice and endured the very strange smell and wondered, was ordering from this place really the right choice? Idk, so I distracted myself by sticking my torso into the fridge to fish out a Fiji Water 500ml($ 2.25. eh, I’m too lazy to walk to CVS to get it at the same cost for a liter). All in all, it was 6 bucks — yes, for some, a lot for a water and a slice, but I have bougie tastes even in a ghetto place. The slice was surprisingly delicious. Cheap, thick pepperoni yeah, but overall really nice balance of ingredients, crispy crust on the edges, soft in the middle. Good crust, perfect flakiness and salt. Maybe I’ll come back, if I have no other choice. It so happens to be the closest deli across the street…

BADATTITUDES!!! Ordered pizza here and the guy has the only attitude for no reason. He literally got mad at me bc I ordered then he had to say it was ready twice. OHMYGOD god forbid you have to say it twice!!! I had to tell him it’s not a big deal bits just pizza and to relax and calm down. So ridiculous.

Great selection for a quick lunch & the food is fresh, delicious & reasonably priced. Salads, sandwiches made to order, a good selection of hot lunch options & an entire selection of fresh pizza by the slice in the back along with a small selection of groceries. Beautiful fresh flower stand just outside the door to the right as well. One small table & a small window front counter with a few stools if you want to sit to eat, but most everyone carried out.

This place is actually much lower quality than I originally posted over a year ago. The hot food is ‘A-OK’ and the sandwiches are average at best. What makes it lower quality is the fact that the place is pretty dirty. The people that serve you are sketchy as hell and I get a bad feeling about them touching the food I’m about to put in my mouth. It seems that more frequently when I get a sandwich here it makes me feel sick. Most recently I was sick for around 48 hours. If you want some grub in the area at a decent price, go for the hot food, skip the sandwiches. And when you go for the hot food try and get them to put as little grease as possible in your container. I, for one, will not come back here.

This place was completely remodeled and gutted last year(and changed their name from«Best of the West» to B&W Deli), so I think that my coworkers old nickname for this place(«Best of the Worst») no longer fits. It’s more like«Okayest of the Decent.» I think. It’s the same employees and owners as before, but it looks like less of a grody roach trap, which is nice. I work in the area, and this is a solid deli. They have your standard deli fare. My favorite thing to get here is a tossed salad — they give you a TON of salad and toppings for about $ 6. Sometimes they’ll throw in a free small bag of chips, sometimes they won’t. One thing I really like about this place is that they have no minimum on credit cards, which is a lifesaver when you really need a coffee or juice but don’t have a couple bucks in your pocket. One thing you should know is that they don’t do pork here, so if you order a bacon egg & cheese, you get that weird rubbery beef based bacon(I think). Same for the sausage and ham, etc. I don’t like that taste/texture of fake bacon or ham so I just stay away from it. Delivery is fast, and last fall I had them deliver a big tray of wraps(chicken and veg) to a hotel a few blocks away(where I & a few others were getting ready for a wedding). I set up and paid for the delivery a few days before, and the delivery was a little early and the wraps were delicious. Can’t ask for more than that.

This is an above average small new york deli because they happen to have surprinsigly solid schlices witch most deli’s dont. In fact within a 5 block radius they have the best schlice and they are open 24 hours but to tell you the truth what keeps me coming back are those insanely good garlic rolls. and as strange as this may sound this place has the best i’ve ever tried and I make it a point to order garlic rolls every where and anywhere i go too that sells them. Al the guy who makes the pies is also the

I like this place. During the day I’m based in the building next door, so I get food from here often. I especially like having breakfast from here. For one thing, they have(on request) whole wheat Kaiser rolls! I get a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich on whole wheat Kaiser. I usually get cucumber on it, which is how my father always makes these sandwiches, which they don’t charge extra for. They include a free coffee with this, and it’s only $ 3.21 with the tax. After a number of times of asking for it, I don’t even have to be specific anymore — the guys always remember my sandwich. There are two men who make them, a tall guy and a short guy, and if the taller one makes the sandwich, it’s usually exactly how I like it, nice and toasty with crunchy bacon. They have good hot food, and on Fridays they offer some interesting West Indies items like roti. The portions are generous and the prices reasonable. They also make pizza, which I’ve never gotten, and have bodega-type grocery items(like cereal, snacks, etc.).

This place is pretty terrible. Actually, its very very terrible. Service was slow the times I went. Food was pretty bad, the bread is stale, the meat is stringy, and the people working there were actually just kind of mean and disrespectful. Don’t go here, seriously. There’s a better deli/grocery store down the street at 36th and 9th avenue, and another deli at 34th and 10th avenue. Food is also overpriced. The two other delis I mentioned are cheaper(around 4 to 5 bucks per sandwich) and the quality is a little better(although still mediocre). Again, definitely do not go here. I don’t normally take such a harsh view of restaurants/delis, but the combination of bad food, high prices, bad service and disrespectful people provides good enough reason to steer very clear of this«restaurant.»

Forget the typical cat-callers or random people coming up to «chat» as you walk down the street, the real way to tell if you’re looking nice(or if your shirt is cut low enough/skirt is high enough) is to see what you pay for your order that day. As Kate F mentioned in her review, you often pay what you look like. I’ll admit — I’ve only gotten one thing here regularly — a plain bagel toasted with salmon cream cheese. My same order will set me back daily anywhere from $ 1 to $ 2.50 depending on who’s at the register and what I’m wearing that day. Either way, it’s a pretty cheap breakfast option compared to the overpriced places that are closer to my work. They’re open late — super late. Actually… I’m not sure if they close at all because I’ve definitely stopped in here for water after a late night on the town. Or maybe I just get drunk earlier and earlier. Can’t… remember… augh. I’d give them a good 3 stars since they knock off a dollar or so every now and then… it’s a nice pick-me-up on those days when I’m in a bleh kind of mood(which is pretty much every morning — I’m not a morning person).

At work we refer to this place as «the deli where you pay what you look like.» The young guy at the counter is waaaay over on the smarmy side of friendly, he kinda makes me feel like a dirty dirty girl, which I am sure he would like to hear. Best of the West is one of those annoying places where they don’t actually affix prices to their goods, but estimitatify the prices for most of them(using the aforementioned low cut shirt algorithm) meaning you’ll never know if you should bring a $ 5 or $ 10 with you when you go to lunch. To top it off, their prepared food looks a day old, even in the morning, and they skimp on the cream cheese on their bagels. Booo. I much prefer the Food Depot on 10th and 34th, the Subway next door, Sun Deli on 35th and 9th or even Seattle Café on 33rd btw 9th and 10th. Sad but true.

3.5 stars Best of the West is a pretty typical NYC deli with sandwiches, a few groceries, etc… They even have pizza here though I probably would never get it here over the other options in the area. They do a lot of business so rest assured nothing sits around forever which is nice. They have a lot of sandwich options and the lunch specials that comes with a soda and chips for $ 6 – 7 are a great deal. They make all the sandwiches to order and you cant go wrong with a turkey, bacon,&swiss hero. They also have a couple hot soups here which are aren’t bad. Good value, good choices, and even a large flower selection on the side(not sure if they’re related businesses or not). They also have a couple tables if you need to eat there and an ATM if you need cash(though they do take cards). UPDATE: I came here to try a b&w cookie as a baseline for one at a typical corner deli. I was surprised that this place was far from the worst. It wasn’t the best either. The thin-ish cookie part was dry but not necessarily in a bad way. The chocolate side had great flavor but the white icing was just a little too thick and sweet.

Ah Best of the West. You are the coffee shop next to my work. You know what kind of coffee I want when I walk in the door and I know how much money to give you. You still havent realized I don’t need a bag with my coffee but thats forgivable cause the napkins are nice. You also make me laugh with how incessantly you flirt with every girl who walks in. Its also humorous the way you yell back to Fozzie for the coffee orders, its very early 70’s TV. Thanks for being what I expect in a deli, oh and PS your pizza is great!

As far as delis go in this area, this is one of the best I’ve found. They’ve got a huge selection of food — for a deli. There’s pizza, calzones, hot and cold sandwiches, soup, and even a hot food area. Then of course there are the drinks and chips and snack food and candy, etc. The prices are one of the best things about this deli, though. Because the place is actually clean you’d expect them to be higher. I’ve never paid more than $ 5 for a sandwich here. Of course, I purposely pick sandwiches that are cheaper. They also have specials that are named after different celebrities. So don’t be surprised if you walk in and see a picture of Britney Spears with her head half shaved and a sandwich named after her. Same goes for Paris Hilton and a number of the NY Yankees. Last Friday I had an egg salad sandwich on white with lettuce. The egg salad had a bit more mayo than I’d normally like, but it did taste good. It was just really messy because the salad kept falling out of the bread. The service here is good too. The people look like they’re actually enjoying their job and they usually make small talk with you while you’re there. I’ve been here three times now and I will be going back.
