I came here on Thursday night, and I sat at a nice corner table at the back. The waitress comes over and offered us the wine list, prior to this i checked out the reviews and saw that there was lot of wine prices complaints, but it looks like they learned from their mistakes and lowered the prices down. The sommelier approached us and gave some recommendation on the wine we decided to go with a nice Burgundy. The waitress came over and explained that he menu has changed and that there is a great chicken for two. So we decided to start with some cheese so they brought a fromager over. He was very nice and took his time with us and he really helped us choose our charcuterie. I highly recommend for all cheese and wine lovers to go there and enjoy their wonderful selection of cheeses and wine.

From start to finish, a wonderful experience. Jonathan was our waiter and he was helpful and professional– conversational in a welcoming manner. The sommelier helped us pick a wine we never would have chosen. It complimented the cheese and charcuterie plate that the fromager chose, again, new culinary adventures. It was all quite succulent and another visit is guaranteed. Wonderful service and fabulous food for an excellent time.

Artisinal is a jumbo-sized french inspired bistro. I had been to Artisinal years past during restaurant week and thought it to be an okay experience. My most recent visit did nothing to shake that. I came in a group of five to celebrate a special occasion on a Thursday night around 6PM. Because our group didn’t plan well, we hadn’t made reservations — luckily we were able to walk in and be seated immediately. It was a pleasant late spring evening so the restaurants had the floor-ceiling windows opened and there were outside street seating as well. Being off 32nd and Park, within close vicinity of the Empire State Building and the hustle/bustle of Herald Square and Korea Town I was concerned that the street noise would become overwhelming. I was pleasantly surprised this was not the case. The waiters were white shirted and white hatted. Except ours — not sure why he had the distinction but in any case… service was quite okay but nothing very special. Our server was quick to arrive, bring about a wine menu, and suggest appetizers. Artisinal smells of baked bread, so I would posit that they make their own in house. However, it took a while for bread to arrive at the table. More on the bread, it was quite good — with a few different varieties in the basket — so good, that I would caution filling up on it. We ordered several appetizers — the octopus d’espagne, the seasoned almonds and olives, the country pâté, and the gougeres. The Gougeres is queso pan, a small round choux dough mixed with cheese. It tasted like a fancy pepperidge farm goldfish cracker. The country pâté came as a slice(about the size of your avg slice of loaf cake) next to a artsy smear of mustard — it was received well by the rest of my party, though personally, I’ve come to the realization that I am more a fan of smooth/spreadable liver pâté. The seasoned almonds and olives were stunningly overpriced at $ 12 for the portions which came in two small sauce bowls. Certainly would suggest passing on this. The octopus was perhaps the best appetizer — it was presented as two tentacles with a good char over a bed of potato, and onions(there is supposed to be chorizo, but we could not tell). So around the table for mains we got: a steak au poivre, mussels, lamb shank, and salmon. The steak au poivre cooked medium rare was well done with the pepper crust doing what it should on a steak au poivre — providing a nice kick. The mussels were of good quality. The lamb shank was also well cooked, a nice portion, the accompany goat cheese polenta was surprisingly tame for anything goat cheese. The salmon was a fair salmon. Overall, I think the chef had a light touch regarding seasoning and would have liked just a bit more salt. Oh and we also had beers which were 10.75 a pint. There were a couple of missteps on service that I would like to note — the bread not showing up, the bus boys clearing our appetizer plates though we ordered apps, bringing incorrect knife and fork settings. These are all really inconsequential things, however, Artisinal charges quite a lot — and at this premium price point you should expect a certain level of excellence and care. I think Artisinal is okay, I mean it really is. The food was very solidly executed(though light on seasoning), the service is attentive(though some rough edges), but there is nothing glaringly bad or shockingly great — for what you’re paying for a meal here, I would expect more.

Went for brunch early on a Sunday morning when the restaurant was relatively empty. The food was nicely prepared(excellent Croque Madame and very good Smoked Salmon Tartine) and everyone was very friendly. They even took the time to show my 8-year daughter their cheese display and their«cheese cave» which she found to be informative and enjoyed.

I have dined here many times in the past. This will be my LAST visit, and I leave behind a restaurant that really was one my wife and I considered one of our favorites. We celebrated several events here, my wife subscribed me to Artisanal’s cheese-of-the-month club for several months for my birthday. We took a class in wine-and-cheese pairing at Artisanal’s annex. We considered this place to be the foundation of our culinary explorations and development. So, we are genuinely sad that our recent experiences — especially yesterday — left us convinced that this establishment should be re-classified as a novelty restaurant good for tourists or individuals who lack an appreciation of food excellence and value. For anyone with an appreciation for fine wine and fine dining, however — GOELSEWHERE, unless the prospect of throwing money in the street is one you find amusing. CONCLUSION: Artisanal has become an offensively over-priced establishment not worthy of consideration. If you crave amazing cheese, buy some from a cheese store and enjoy it at home. Otherwise, dining here — especially if you like wine — is an exercise in throwing away one’s money. ANALYSIS: I will discuss the unsophisticated presentation, noisy ambience, deficient service, and careless kitchen work in a moment. At the outset, however, allow me to express the source of real rage. Like any diner, I am more than accustomed in NY to wine markups that can leave one unhappy. The mark of a good sommelier, however, is his(or her) ability to find at least a few mid-range bottles to put on the menu to offer his diners an opportunity to enjoy up-and-coming vintners, or enjoy a decent glass, without breaking the bank. Artisanal’s management, by contrast, apparently believes in predatory model that simply cannot be justified and should not be tolerated by NYC diners. There are just too many decent places with good winelists out there that have bottles under $ 75 that are not garbage. I was surprised when I read the winelist to note that there was NOTHING on the list under $ 65. The sole $ 65 bottle, our server explained, really was not drinkable. I chose, instead, a Languedoc, Ciffre Saint-Chinian 2013. It was really quite good. Why am I furious? Because, dear readers, Artisanal sells this $ 10 secondary-growth bottle for…$ 75. I’m really sorry, but that is unacceptable: 750% markup is beyond the pale even for NY. I did a little research at the table on my iPhone using Vivino — I had plenty of time since our server was missing from the floor or ignored us for extended periods of time — and discovered a consistent markup for wines that ordinarily would be considered low– to mid-range bottles of between 500 and 800%. But I would have grinned and born it without writing this review had the remainder of the meal measured up to my expectation of Artisanal. No, not even close. We began with the gouda and stout fondue. The serving size was barely adequate as an appetizer for two people with reasonable appetites. Bizarrely, there were pockets of cold and un-melted cheese in the chafing dish. The overall flavor of the melted fondue — none of which was warmer than tepid — was pedestrian, without any finish or complexity. For our supper, we each chose hamburgers — this was a pre-concert meal, and we felt like something more complicated would be incongruous. I noticed, however, that the significant portion of the menu actually now is occupied by the hamburger offerings. Since when is Artisanal a burger joint? Well, it is now, sort — — I’d say a mediocre burger joint. The burgers came on a large brioche that concealed a truly diminutive dollop of cheese on each, wilted-looking lettuce, and a piece of tomato on mine that was from end of the fruit. My wife ordered her burger well done. Hey, she likes it that way. The burger she received was pink in the middle and crumbling. I ordered my burger rare, and I received raw ground beef. There is a subtle difference between rare and raw. This was not rare, it was raw. The truffle cheese I asked for as an accompaniment on the burger was utterly imperceptible. It took us more than two(2) hours to finish our meal. I wish I could say that we were enjoying our company so much that we dawdled. Unfortunately, the length of our meal was largely the result of our server’s absence.

Food was rather disappointing. The side salads that come with the meals are bland and tasteless. My Tuna burger was ok, but nothing I would order again. The«artisan Mac and cheese» was extremely creamy — almost soup with the amount of cream and cheese in it. The tomato soup was not inspiring either with the artisan grilled cheese. The croque madam was excellent though. Overall I would not come back again, insanely overpriced for rather bland food.

Came to the hostess to ask if there was poutine on the menu who gave me a very weird look then a rude answer. She doesn’t know that they removed it from the menu in 2012& haven’t looked back since. Unfortunately, the rude treatment deferred my wanting to eat in their otherwise buzzing and very chic interior. I wish I could add more, but this rudeness is all I have to report.

My wife and I came here for brunch. We are planning our first trip to Europe together so I wanted to treat her to a preview of french cuisine so we have a frame of reference when we eat around Paris. When we first walked in the hostess seated us right away. It was very bright, airy and colorful with tall ceilings. The décor also felt very Parisian. Our server was very friendly but it was a little difficult to understand him due to the noise and his French accent. At least it added to the European feel. We decided to do a wine a cheese pairing. There were 3 or 4 preset pairings or you could make your own. Since we are both beginners we chose the first preset option. We also decided to try the beef tartare since we have never tried it before. While we were seated and waiting they actually had a duo(singer and standing bass player) perform live music. I’m not sure if this happens every weekend but it added to the experience and they did sound nice. They started by serving different types of bread to the table with butter. Our bed tartare came next which came different types of toasted bread, french fries, and an open raw quail egg on top for you to pour over yourself if you choose to do so. We were a little nervous at first because it was literally raw hamburger meat we were about to eat. But after a few bites it was actually pretty good. It has a texture and taste similar to tuna tartare just obviously beefy. I’d still rather have a good ol’ medium rare steak or burger. The wine and cheese pairings were very unique to us. We’ve had wine and cheese before but what a difference it makes when they are paired correctly. The flavors and textures actually enhance each other. It definitely makes me want to learn more. The cheese was even brought out to us by one of the chef’s. Overall it was a great experience. It’s a bit pricey for me but I knew that before going in.

I will keep this brief since Artisanal doesn’t need any more reviews. I went here for Restaurant Week with a friend around 6:15pm. It was empty then, but it got crowded quickly. She got the escargot, steak medium-rare, and ice cream. I got the butternut squash bisque, steak medium-rare, and chocolate mousse. Steak came with greens and fries, neither of which I rather liked. I wish my bisque wasn’t lukewarm, and that my steak portion was bigger, but otherwise, I enjoyed the ambiance and food. However, I probably wouldn’t recommend coming here outside of RW because you can find what you find here elsewhere for half the price.

Came here for lunch with coworkers, Restaurant Week Winter 2016. The service was soooooo slow. It took two hours for a three course meal and mind you, the restaurant was only 1⁄3rd full. That’s totally unacceptable. All that wait and the food was mediocre at best. And to top it off, we didn’t really feel welcomed because once we asked for the Restaurant Week menu(make sure you do this right at the beginning, since they are quick to give you the regular menu), the grey, curly haired manager(I think) came up to our table and conspicuously sized us up. He did the It’s Always Sunny ocular pat down. Everyone at my table sensed it too. I guess Artisanal is used to the suit and tie banker type and not the jeans and t-shirt IT type. I’m only giving it an additional star since they had cheese samples at the entrance. That was great.

If only Unilocal had a 0 stars option… Anyway, my experience at Artisanal was for New Year’s Eve this past year. They did a HORRIFIC job at organizing it and a wonderful job at over-advertising it. It was supposed to be a French themed fête with cabaret, cirque du soleil dancers, acrobats, fire-breathers and more… This was a deal advertised on pulsd for entry, 6 hours of unlimited alcohol and snacks. I was thrilled because 1) this place is down the street from me and 2) the description was fantastic. So fantastic that I got a bunch of my friends to come along with me. Lets fast forward to the day of the event, my friends meet up at my place and we head over to the restaurant at 9:45pm(the event was advertised to start at 9pm). We get there and we are told that the bar area wasn’t ready. We wait 15 minutes outside and we were literally the FIRST ones in. We walk in and manage to barely squeeze through to the bar only to find out that there was a small«standing area» for 100s of people that bought the same deal to wait. It was overpacked in a matter of minutes, we could not move an inch and were forced to stand like that until midnight when they decided to open up the dining area to us. And just forget about getting drinks when you couldn’t even move! What they failed to mention was that they sold out«seating» tickets directly on their website for people interested in a pre fixe dinner($ 750 pp). And whatever standing area they had next to the bar was for the poor common folk who spent $ 70+ dollars to be cramped in like sardines. It was disastrous. I have had overhyped NYEs before but never has it been such a failure like this one. Never again Artisanal Fromagerie!

Wow, This place hits so many Unilocal lists: Being served the BEST Hot Chocolate. OMG, whats being served here is so rich and decadent. Is that homemade marshmallows? At $ 7 per cup, it’s ta die for Artisanal Fromagerie Bistro is what cheesy dreams are made of, there are so many cheeses to choose from This is a beautiful French bistro, it’s really an inviting spot I brought my wife here for brunch @ 11:30 on Sunday. One thing about brunch in New York, no alcohol is being served until noon. You want a Bloody Mary? Of course you do, its Brunch! You gotta wait until noon. Something to point out I noticed on the menu, the $ 20 option. For $ 20 bucks you can drink as many Brunch drinks, I think within one hour? I don’t think my wife would have been very happy if I was pounding down beers and Bloody Marys on her birthday and got all buzzy. More hot chocolate please… I was going to order a Pâté but it doesn’t go too well with HC so I ordered Beignets. Aren’t Beignets from New Orleans? They were a tasty starter for our first course I really wanted to order the Duck Confit Hash but I’m a sucker for classic French Onion Soup. Made perfectly with the tangiest Gruyère(I don’t care if the Swiss claim Gruyère, its all French to me) as well as the onion broth. Perfectly executed My main entrée was the croquet madame. The croque monsieur, the classic French ham and cheese sandwich covered in cheesy bechamel, becomes a «madame» when a fried egg is placed on top. Well call me lady. Gimme that egg! This dish was cooked beautifully To sum up Artisanal Fromagerie Bistro, it’s a beautiful French Bistro with outrageous French dishes. I’d like to bring my sister in law here, I’d think she’d love a nice Fondue as well as their cheese plates. They raised the prices, its a little expensive for bistro food but what you’re getting is quality and not quantity. It’s on Park Ave so expect to pay $ 100 for two with drinks. à bientôt!

I was far from the only dissatisfied customer, as I saw when I read the reviews here. The place is ridiculously overpriced(around $ 20 for a glass of wine). Food is mediocre and service is worse. We waited endlessly and were repeatedly told, «I’m sorry, we’re busy.» I pointed out there were many empty tables. The«rare hamburger» I ordered came well done so I asked them to redo it. What I got was rare, but dry, tasteless and on a stale bun. Nobody liked what they ordered. We were celebrating a birthday so I told the manager it would be appropriate to do something after keeping us waiting so long, maybe offer a bottle of wine. He said, «The owner doesn’t like to give out wine.» Finally, he said he would take care of the check. What he did was remove the burger from the tab. The owner was there and I asked to speak to him. He told us the sous chef had been burned in the kitchen, but the waiter and manager had attributed the slow service to «being busy.» I pleaded with the manager to do something since we were being hosted and our host was given a steep bill, for which we got nothing we enjoyed. The owner asked what would make us happy. We suggested he cut the bill in half. Seeing the four of us were extremely disappointed, he offered to comp us. That was fair, but I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. In a city with so many other excellent choices, My husband and I had the cheese fondue here one night last year and agreed it was tasteless and that we would not return or recommend the place.

A friend of mine came to New York and had heard about this place; amazing cheeses and wines– our favorite things to talk about and try. We were expecting a hefty bill but we were also expecting: 1) good service 2) good food. We received neither of those things. Upon being seated we had someone ask us about wine lists. We had been walking around the city all day and just weren’t much in the mood for wines so we told them we were not going to order any drinks. The man gave us a very dirty look, took the menu and walked away without another word. Later another man came back with the menu again and the process was repeated. We were mostly excited to try some interesting cheeses. The prices… astronomical compared to what you get. $ 40 for 4 squares of cheese and a small basket of bread, different kinds and not all of them were meant to have cheese spread on them(cinnamon raisin??). The cheeses were fun and fine but, again, very overpriced. We then ordered our food(by now we were thinking ‘maybe we should leave’ but we didn’t). I ordered a lobster roll which was supposed to be on an elegant type of bread(I have since forgotten what it was called). I received my food and was amazed to find cold but toasted bread that had an awful resemblance to that of Sara Lee bread with lobster pieces and a white sauce and a pile of one type of green with no dressings of any kind. This can be repeated for the other two dishes we ordered as entrees. The bill was about $ 300 total for the worst food experience of my life. Save yourself the obscene amount of money and find somewhere better.

Went here for dinner. My uncle is a foodie and he is familiar with this place. We got a cheese plate that was out of this world… i don’t recall exactly what types but I can say that I have never had cheese that good. For dinner I got venison steak with a sweet potatoes/pumpkin purée underneath. and a beat salad that had a shift white cheese at the center. This was by far one of the best meals I have had in the last five years. The restaurant is very well decorated. Very upscale and classic. Our waiter was very helpful and always there when we needed him.

I really wish I could leave ZERO stars for this place. I purchased 4 Pulsd Bronze packages($ 72 a piece — pulsd did the right thing and issued a refund) for a New Year’s Eve party. It was the worst event I have ever attended. We got there at 10:15pm and we could tell that the event was oversold. We could not get to the coat check and we were not able to get to the bar to order the drinks we were entitled to for the next 6 hours. We decided to leave at 10:30 and saw a line of people not being allowed in. I’m guessing they didn’t get in because the intention of the people inside was to stay there at least until the stroke of midnight. Obviously greed would drive a place to overbook an event like this and it’s also obvious there was no concern for the people that were there. They had people waiting outside on NYE with no place else to go and if a fire broke out or anything dangerous happened the people inside would be in a situation that could cost them their lives. Shame on all the people involved in putting this event together. This is a place I won’t ever be stepping into again and with all the choices in NYC that know how to do things right the best advice is for you to choose one of them over Artisanal. UPDATE: pulsd saw this review and did the right thing and refunded me because for them this type of disaster was unprecedented. YAY pulsd!!!

Artisanal never disappoints! It’s my 3rd time coming here bc i heard they have truffle fondue on the menu. Their portion seems small when you see the dish at first but i can assure you for two people, 2 appetizer and small fondue will fill you up for dinner. We order foie gras, beef tartare and truffle fondue large. Foie gras was very rich in flavor and beef tartare melts in your mouth. For two people, i highly recommend getting just regular size fondue because this thing is gigantic! They don’t go cheap on truffle at all. We picked sausages and apples to dip and they blended so well with truffle dip in my mouth. Definitely will be coming back for more!

He was also very friendly and seemed dedicated to help even on a holiday and never seemed to be just doing his job. The sommelier, Josh, was the best and made every glass worthy of remembrance. Would give it a 3.5 if Unilocal did half ratings. Bumped up because I came here for a Unilocal Elite event. The restaurant itself is nice, roomy and the service is good. The waitstaff, cocktail servers and cheesemongers clearly all know what they’re doing. They had a good variety of cheeses — soft, hard, stinky and goat, sheep, cow. They paired it nicely with some walnuts, grapes, chocolates, crackers. I love the Brazilian cheese puffs they have. In addition, they also served savory food(grilled cheese was meh, mac n cheese came out in mini skillets and were GREAT, mussels were decent, tuna tartare was average). The manager was watching over the event and was asking how we liked everything, so I appreciated that. The cocktails were definitely my favorite part! The waiters were nonstop with wine pours — whenever our glasses were empty, they’d come by with red/white wine. Cocktails were complex and interesting. Was given a sparkling wine upon entry which was average. Had one with gin and 7 spices and it was too herbal for my taste. Tried a bourbon and passionfruit one which was surprisingly amazing. I didn’t expect the combo to work out, but it did. My favorite was their rendition of a Moscow Mule with fresh cassis instead of lime juice. Finally, we were given desserts as well and their Cream Puff(with some sort of mango purée inside?), Crème Brulee and sorbets were all good! Their marshmallow, macarons and jellies were subpar.

Came here on a weeknight past 9 and the restaurant was relatively empty. We were seated quickly and the waiter was attentive and friendly. We ordered the large fondue, which came in a variety of cheese options. I believe their classic option is Swiss elemental, but we opted for the Gouda which is a bit stronger in flavor. We ordered beef tips, kielbasa, and pears as our dippers. The fondue also comes with a bread basket per person. Also got an order of truffle fries. I thought the meal was great. The cheese was excellent as were the additional dippers we chose. The beef tips were a bit hard to chew because they were pretty big pieces, but If you cut them in half they’re perfect. They were flavorful and went well with the cheese. The kielbasa and pears complimented the Gouda as well. The truffle fries were a bit too much after we finished the fondue, but they were decent as well. We probably would have enjoyed them more if we were less full. They had an extensive wine menu as well, and the prices per glass were relatively standard for a restaurant($ 12+ I believe). Overall an enjoyable meal. C’est bon.

Came here for Lunch during Restaurant Week with some coworkers. Started off with some bread in a basket. — it was little chewy to my liking. HORS D’OEUVRES: — SOUPEDUJOUR:(market selection) — I had a creamy white soup and it was topped with crunchy thin slices of potato stix(very similar to the chips). It was thick and tasty. It looked like it might have been a lot of calories considering the orange oil that the potato stix gave off. PLATSPRINCIPAUX: –CHICKENPAILLARD: Everyone is probably wondering what paillard. I was also clueless as to what it was. It is flatten chicken that is grilled in a circle shape. on top of the chicken there was White Asparagus, Arugula, Shaved Parmesan, and Mushroom Vinaigrette. The toppings were really good. Unfortunately I thought their chicken was a little dry. I don’t like the grilled burnt taste it had. The chicken was not burnt and black but it tasted like it was burnt. — SAUTÉEDSKATEWING: My coworker ordered this one and I have to say this dish is better than the chicken. The fish was soft and juicy mixed with Blood Orange Grenobloise and Caulifower. DESSERTS: CHOCOLATEMARQUISE — the chocolate was very rich but the hazelnut flavor grabbed my attention. What I didn’t like about this was that it was a little too salty. CRÈMEBRÛLÉE «LECIRQUE» — the crème brûlée is standard in almost every restaurant and it was just as fine here. Service: — Waiters were very friendly, all smiles. What I didn’t like was that their service was kind of slow. It is great for people who like to chat, talk and take their time but for most people they are on a lunch break that is 1 hr long. Eating here can easily go past an hour. Décor: Very Bright and open. Style is sort of classy. Most people you find lunching here are business men and women in their suits.

Came here for dinner after all my friends were raving about this place and because it was still offering the Restaurant Week menu. We ordered: — Wild Burgundy Snails — Duck Bourguignon — Restaurant Week Dinner Menu($ 35): Soupe Du Jour, Sautéed Skate Wing, Chocolate Marquise Total bill including tax and tip came to $ 100 for 2 people. Overall, the place had a good ambiance and excellent service. The food itself was good, but not particularly remarkable. This may be because we did not get anything with cheese. The highlight of all the food dishes was the Skate Wing, which had beautifully balanced flavours and was tender and crispy, followed by the Chocolate Marquise, which was not too rich and had a pleasant contrast in texture between the chocolate and the feuillatine. The Soupe Du Jour was unfortunately quite grainy and too heavily salted for me. Despite all this though, I didn’t find anything particularly«special» about this place that would warrant coming here again or that was good enough for me to recommend it to others when there are so many other places in New York City — though I might make an exception for their cheese fondue.

Gute Toiletten.
