I would like to give 3.5, but rounded down due to location/crowds. Amazing beer and whiskey list and a decent interior, but it feels large and unwelcoming, yet packed with midtown-ers. I feel like this would be a great place for a 3pm beer on a weekday. Besides that, I think I’ll avoid it. There are way too many other places with great beer in the city, that this doesnt need to be revisited. That being said, if you’re in this neighborhood you could do much much worse.

5 Stars for the beer bar 3 Stars for the food selection — but this is a beer bar first The ambiance is great for an intimate setting. Small groups are perfect and it’s not too loud. It can be crowded during the week but there is NO happy hour. Don’t let that stop you from coming in and enjoying a few beers and good company.

Visited on a Friday night in hopes of trying some new beers and eating soft pretzels. Who knew that bars in New York City get crowded on Friday nights? At 9pm there were no seats left and a lot of people hovering over tables to try to get some. The bar’s interior is really cool with a mix of velvet armchairs, oriental rugs, vintage posters and wood booths. The beer taps practically line an entire wall. The beer menu is easy to navigate for even a beer novice thanks to their sorting and headings. There were a mix of people drinking to get drunk and serious beer enthusiasts taking notes on iPhone apps. We fell in the middle and tried two beers each. I opted for lighter Belgian style beers and my boyfriend had IPAs. We liked everything we drank and were excited to try these unique beers. We did not order food as we hoped. I don’t think it’s possible to enjoy food if you eat it standing up. We will definitely come back during off peak hours so we can try more beers and snack in a laid back environment.

What’s there not to like? Great beer! Awesome staff! Plenty of room! Convenient location that offers flights for maximum experimentation. If you like craft beer this is definitely the place to visit in Manhattan.

This place is the coolest. They have an excellent selection of beers, and it’s easy to order a flight if you’re indecisive or want to try a few. The dark/intimate interior is the perfect place to catch up with friends. All of the details – down to the coat hooks – are eclectic and Old World. My only complaint/reason I’m not giving it 5 stars is that I asked the server for recommendations for a good sour, and what she recommended tasted like sour patch kids soaked in beer. To me, that’s not a good sour, and the sign of a beer that wasn’t aged to be sour, but was cheaply made sour at the end of the brewing process because suddenly sours are hip. It’s like your cousin who jumps from trend to trend and identity to identity based on what’s current, but never seems to find himself. I think a truly good beer bar should have servers who not only know which beers fall under which categories, but which ones are good. There’s no way anyone who knows sours would have recommended this particular brew, but I trusted the locale to tell me true, and was disappointed. I learned a valuable lesson about that particular brewery, but wouldn’t leave too much to staff expertise here.

Foremost The Ginger Man is a beer bar, a great beer bar, but the food isn’t bad either. When I walked in the first time I thought it was deceptively large for Manhattan. The bar’s décor reminds me of a 1940’s British pub(Complete with hand-pumps). Yesterday was the 5th time 30 old fraternity brothers from everywhere in NJ and NY showed up to celebrate here; and what better place than the back room at GM. This bar is large to begin with and then there’s the back room. I imagine it holds 50 or more people who dine or drink in the comfort of leather sofas and armchairs. It is dimly lit with beer memorabilia tastily done. I usually sit at the bar at a restaurant. I find I get much better service. Not so yesterday. The service was superb. We were disappointed to see that Theresa the waitress who served us for the past four years no longer worked at GM. She was excellent, however Kelly whom we had yesterday was every but as good as her or better. Kelly served 30 boisterous and friendly guys with a smile and was quick to show up with another beer. Her knowledge of beer was vast. Cicerone trained, she was quick to pick out a beer for an individual’s taste. She was excellent. We had sandwich and cheese platters that seemed to please everyone. There’s no lack of beer bars in Manhattan but if you have a group, this is the place to go.

As everyone says and what you will quickly discover if you come here, The Ginger Man’s beer selection is extensive. I was turned on to this bar thanks to a friend who shares a similar distaste of midtown bars but clearly found a needle in the haystack. I’m not a beer aficionado by any means. That means I couldn’t care less about hops or anything thing else beer lovers love about beer, but it’s very possible that’s because I’ve been drinking the wrong beers. Of the handful of times I’ve been here, I really enjoyed my picks. It also helps that the bar’s décor is very warm and inviting and not dominated by a tv screen every which way you turn. If you come towards the end of the work week, it will be filled with suits, but come earlier in the week, and you’ll get to enjoy your pick of bar-seating, tables, booths, or their many sofas. Unfortunately, they don’t offer happy hour but everything else makes up for it.

Classic place in NYC to grab one of many beers from around the world. The vibe reminds me of a dimly light speakeasy with an old world bar type of charm Many different seating areas in the front, around the bar and into the back… Great place to catch up with friends and always a lively crowd

We found this place a few blocks South of Grand Central after wandering around and finally looking at the Unilocal app to choose a cool bar out of hundreds in the area. Based on the number of reviews, I was expecting it to be packed, but we were able to get a seat at the bar pretty quickly. I really loved the atmosphere of this place, a whole lot of wood and very dimly lit. It would be pretty cozy if there was ever a Winter this year. They have a great draft beer selection, and apparently, they have their own beer, but they were out of it. They also have a decent sized menu for a pretty affordable price by NYC standards. We ended up just grabbing some quick snacks with the Parmsan Garlic soft pretzel, and the kettle chips with homemade sour cream and onion dip. We were both a huge fan of the pretzel; it was nice and soft on the inside with a great crunch on the outside, and the multigrain mustard and hot sauce that came with it were pretty tasty. The onion dip with the chips was great as well. I recommend mixing some of the hot sauce with it to kick it up a notch. Overall, it’s a very cool bar right in the middle of Manhattan that’s a little hidden from the main streets, so you don’t feel like the craziness of NYC is happening right outside. It would definitely be a nice and relaxing place for a date night as well!

Unfortunately I was forced to leave the establishment. I was so excited to try out the Ginger Man after hearing great things. Warning to all 20-somethings: you will be disrespected here. The waitress rolled her eyes and refused to answer our questions asking for beer recommendations. We overheard her speaking to older customers seated in the couch area, who she was warm and friendly to. We were willing to buy drinks and stay around for a while, but this waitress looked at us like we were scum. She took my friend’s order and when I tried to order, she simply WALKEDAWAY! I tried to call her when she walked by again, she glanced at me and completely ignored me. She delivered drinks to all the other groups around us and brought us nothing. We had to leave and went to 5th and Mad instead. I have not been treated so disrespectfully in recent memory. Never, ever going back and telling all friends to avoid this place.

I always complain that my neighborhood of Midtown East doesn’t have a lot of great bars, but The Ginger Man certainly proved me wrong! If you like trying different flavors of beer as much as I do, this is a great bar to visit. During my visit, I managed to try a milk and honey chamomile beer as well as a spicy habanero beer, flavors that I haven’t stumbled upon anywhere else. You can get a flight of beers(4 smaller sizes to sample) for $ 14, or a standard size for about $ 7.50. The location is very large and spacious while also exuding a sophisticated ambiance. I didn’t get around to trying the food, but I’ll be returning so I’m sure I’ll have a chance to.

*** Delicious selection of beer, Great service, Must try the pretzel *** Came here with a friend and had a great time. There’s a wide selection of beer choices and you can sample, if you like. It does get crowded, so I would recommend coming early to get a good seat. Overall, great vibe and service if you’re looking to catch up with a friend.

I would call this your average bar. Well… your average bar but with a lot of space. The beer and whiskey menus are extensive. The waitress pointed out the whiskey and wine menu… I looked through 3 pages before I finally found the wine section. The beer menu is so extensive that when my husband ordered a flight of beers(for $ 14…not bad!) he couldn’t re-find the names of the beers he wanted to order! As for someone like me who is not a fan of beer or whiskey, they do have a selection of wines and a small selection of ciders. I shared the hard apple cider with my friend. It tasted fine, just like apple juice. I also ordered the twice baked potato and it was better than I expected. Came fully loaded with broccoli, sour cream, bacon and cheese. This a fun, relaxing place to hang out. We sat near the front and the tables aren’t so close together you’re sitting on top or spilling on each other. The space is much appreciated.

I have fallen in love with a bar, and its name is Ginger Man. First off, I should say that I consider myself a beer enthusiast. Therefore, it should come as little surprise that I love this bar. The beer menu is the most extensive I have ever seen, and through experience serves as proof to me that there is a beer for anyone and everyone. This place gets busy most nights, probably because word spreads quick about gems like this. The only time I’ve been where it wasn’t busy was the Fourth of July. If you want to get comfortable, I suggest the little room ’round back that has some couches and loveseats for some more intimate drinking. People go to different bars for different reasons, but there are few where the drinks really are the star. There are no TVs at the Ginger Man, just bartenders, tables, and their daily printed menus waiting to be perused. If you love beer or even if you’re just trying to get into it, there is no better place to do so than The Ginger Man.

This was our last stop in NYC, and I am sooo glad we made it a point to visit this establishment. After walking all morning around Bryant Park and the National Library I was thirsty like a camel, and all I wanted was beer. My husband found this place through Unilocal and because where beer was, we followed. Upon entering the doors, I was very surprised to find such large restaurant because up until then I had encounter little places in the Big Apple. The area is super spacious and has everything from a couple of couches to chill, to tables and booths. We decided though to go straight to the bar and made it a point to sit there until we had to catch our flight. When I got the menu I was in awe to see the quantity of beers they had both in tap and in bottles. I proceeded to get a flight for myself and I was filled with happiness when I found out I could add ciders to my flight. This was like a dream come true because I had never encounter that on a brewery. I then got 2 ciders and 3 stouts. To say I remember which ones I got will be a lie, but I do remember I was a very happy camper. While we drank, we ordered some kettle potato chips with an onion dip, and I will say that I was a bit disappointed at it because the chips were clearly from a bag, and the dip tasted like sour cream and nothing else. I would certainly come back to this place on my next visit to NYC!

Everyone knows The Ginger Man as one of the most outstanding and spectacular bar for beers in the city. Beer flights on fleek, anyone? I came here for the first time many years ago. It didn’t leave that big of an impression, other than, holy moly that’s a lot of drunk businessmen at the bar. It’s definitely not a date spot, but you and your bruhs wanna make an epic night? Start it here! Visited yesterday(Tuesday night at around midnight) and we were carded. This was likely my 6th time here and I’ve been carded every time — thank you. Keeps me feeling young. I can’t drink any kind of beer other than cider anymore because of my gluten sensitivity, but I was happy with having the 3 options available. I tried 2 of them and can’t remember the names, but they were both fine(one was a bit too sour for my taste and the other was a bit too sugary #firstworldproblems). The kitchen was closing shortly after we arrived, and the waitress seemed quite pushy about wanting us to keep ordering. I didn’t feel like she was genuinely trying to be an attentive waitress, but rather was annoyed that we were drinking too slow. Mind you, we were all quite heavily intoxicated already from a charity dinner at Gotham Hall and walked in the rain to grab more drinks. But since there was no way for her to know that, I understand why she acted the way she did. We’re sorry we weren’t more sober when we got to you! No reservations — race for that table because you’ll be waiting for a long time if you come during peak hours(after work).

They claim to be the place with more sours in NY and sure they are with probably 7 in total and so far for what I saw on multiple places they definitely won by far. With a nice probably 200 different beers between bottles and tap this place is the best bar around Manhattan area. However I didn’t fall in love with this place. Nice vibe, super chill and supper fast service, but they must get busy because according to a sign on the bar the don’t to flights at some point during happy hour. We ordered and appetizer to try with our beers which tastes like chips from a bag and onion deep no bueno. For the most part good bar huge craft beer selection, but if you are looking for anything really special from up north they don’t have that wild factor. Like I said good to grab a beer and that is about it.

Loved this place. A little hole in the wall with 72 beers on tap, including about 5 sour beers. Usually I’m lucky if I can find one sour beer on tap at a brewery. My only complaint is that they only offer a 4 beer flight. There are SO many beers that a 5 or 6 flight would be helpful, because I’m not sure I want 8, plus the 4 was expensive, but hey, you’re in New York right? The pretzel was piping hot and homemade beer cheese delicious. Loved this place

Classy and inviting. The NYC incarnation of the Ginger Man is a nice place to drink your favorite brew. The space is charming with great décor. I recommend it because the staff are friendly and knowledgable. Definitely worth an afternoon of conversation and beer!
