Came for lunch around 1:30 on a weekday with a friend and we had the place to ourselves. The girl working behind the bar and serving, Rayna, was friendly and welcoming. The cauliflower sandwich is absolutely delicious. Good bread, lots of roasted cauliflower and greens and herbs. My friend had The Beast and loved it. They’re not cheap($ 10 on average), but fill you up just the right amount. Sandwiches are serves with pickles and animal crackers on the side; cute! Grapefruit soda was so-so, a bit too sweet for my taste. I wanted the lemon/rosemary but they were out. Rayna did give me a free refill when she found out I wasn’t super impressed by the grapefruit flavor. Really recommend this place!

Animals instantly became one the places why I miss New York so much back home. When we got in around lunch time the place was empty. And that’s a shame. They serve a small but amazing variety of sandwiches. I had the Beast and it lived up to its name. Sweet meats, pickled onions, stoned fruits, some horseradish and an overall great depth of flavour. Served on two pieces of well baked bread. Now that is something you can wake me up for any night of the week. And please do so! My friend had the cauliflower sandwhich. Personally I didn’t see how a cauliflower on a sandwich would work. But it did. Again: great depth of flavor. Sometimes you come across a place that has the ambition to look old, like it has been there since the early 1900’s. So does Animals. But! Animals actually pulls it off. The bar, the tables, the floor, the chairs, the piano, the books and even the toilets: I constantly had the feeling that Sherwood Anderson would drop in any second.

I went yesterday and had the vegan cauliflower sandwich. I live for a good sandwich, and this one did not disappoint. It was served on some sort of delicious ciabatta-style bread that was both crunchy and chewy. The cauliflower was delicious and perfectly roasted, and the cucumber and mint gave it a sort of banh-mi flavor which was interesting. The server was really nice, and the atmosphere was really pleasant. I will absolutely go back here!

Very small sandwich spot, don’t let the size of this place fool you. I’ve been here twice and have loved it both times. The Beast is my favorite sandwich so far, but I haven’t had the pulled bacon. Great staff, intimate setting. Great menu and drink menu.

Cute shop styled like your design-conscious great uncle’s back shed and sandwiches on crunchy baguette. We tried two sandwiches: Beast, and pulled bacon. They were both fantastic. We had a side of pickled cabbage I enjoyed but which was too spicy for my friend. We were there early, so we had the place to ourselves. The house-made cola & fernet cocktail was unique enough to come back again, as if the sandwiches weren’t enough…

WoW. Animals. Finally I made it to you the last day of living in EV. So perfectly simple combination of flavor… perfect bread, crusty outside and chewy, stretchy inside, perfectly cooked meet VERY flavorful, simple but powerful seasonings. The beast with wonderful sweetness and highlighted by sour surprise from the pickle onion. Pulled pork was also perfect. Hands down another level better than any other sandwiches places around! The reason I always miss out getting it every day is that it only open week days before I back from work. But I seriously think about taking day off just for a superb satisfying sandwiches feast visit to Animals.

Animals is technically part of The Wayland, which is one of the many trendy spots popping up along Avenue C. After finally finding the place, my girlfriend and I found ourselves in a rush to make it to the movies within 30 minutes. Our waitress was great in getting us in and out, despite being a busy time of the night. I got the Pernil Romero(slow-roasted pork shoulder covered in a robust garlic and rosemary sauce), and the lady got the pulled chicken sandwich. We also split the Brussels sprouts as an app. While I could have done without the sprouts, the sandwiches were amazing. The bread was fresh, the meat top notch. I only wish I could have enjoyed it more by not being in a rush, but I will certainly be back. These sandwiches are legit!

5 stars for the pulled bacon sandwich! I wouldn’t even had known about The Wayland’s daytime sandwich shop Animals if not for an article on thrillist. When I read about the pulled bacon sandwich I had to have it. So when I was nearby for work I dropped by for lunch. I had to take it to go but they packed it well and includes the side fixings of pickles, jalapeños, and animal crackers. The sandwich itself is to die for! All the components of it, the hearty bread, the smoky pork, the refried beans and the greens dressed in avocado and mayo make for a very satisfying and delightful sandwich. I definitely want to try their other sandwiches. Edit: I’ve since tried other sandwiches and they are all terrific!

Check out the 4.5 stars on 150 reviews for the Wayland. Same owner, same kitchen, same awesome food. Total gem. Super-nice dude who seems to own the place clearly takes pride in what he does. Ask about the food or the drink and he loves to share. Go during the day and have it to yourself. Their non-alcoholic drinks are totally delicious with lunch, btw. Do you eat gluten-free? Order your sandwich up as a plate, or a scramble with eggs. Righteous. And that pulled bacon? It’s not like any ‘bacon’ you’ve ever had. It’s completely different. And amazing. Not ‘better’, than regular ‘bacon’. But amazing. Perfectly balanced by the bright acidity of the red slaw and other veggies. Great dish.

Awesome extension of The Wayland bar. Same owner, same vibe, awesome sandwiches. Shared the Pernil Romero and Chicken sandwiches and both were delicious! Slightly favored the chicken b/c it was a little more complex but I would recommend either. As much as the filling of a sandwich is important, I think most people would agree that the bread can be a make or break element; both sandwiches came on a perfectly balanced, crusty baguette. The owner was friendly and even let me bring coffee in from nearby Ninth Street Espresso, since they don’t serve coffee. He also told us their plan to install large open windows and a front porch to hang out on. This place is a keeper!

Pulled Bacon Sandwich. Freakin porktastic. I don’t care how corny that sounds, the sandwich is just that good. I tried to manage my high expectations when I knew the chef at the Wayland was behind the sandwiches(his pork shoulder sandwich has stolen my heart and I don’t think I’ll ever get it back) but there was truly no need. This sandwich is great. The staff is super friendly and its in the expanded space of the Wayland, win win win. I will be back for more!

The new space attached to neighborhood cocktail gem The Weyland, open for lunch, about six tables and a well-edited menu of sandwiches and a few farm-to-table-looking sides(brussels, red slaw). Nothing bar-foody or over-seasoned on the menu, but also no smaller entrees(soups, salads). They offer homemade sodas as well as a short list of beers with a few local favorites like Naragannsett. The brisket sandwich(«Beast») was subtly flavored and tender, served with fresh homemade pickles and signature animal crackers. The bread was crusty and flavorful but a bit chewy for a such a tender sandwich — it got messy. The rosemary-lemon soda was nicely balanced and not too sweet, and the homemade root beer had a delicious spicy and toasty note. The small staff was friendly and clearly interested in establishing themselves in the neighborhood — no plans for delivery any time soon, but definitely a welcome bit of heavier fare than the nearby Barnyard with a similar commitment to quality ingredients.
