The name of the store implies that they carry art by American artists. My husband, some friends and I were in NY on vacation, and stopped into this lovely store. My husband spotted some earrings he thought I’d like, and he was right. My husband asked if the price would be negotiable, and the woman said that the earrings were on consignment by the artist. When we asked who the artist was, she didn’t know, looked it up, and told us the artist was Israeli. That’s fine, and we bought the earrings, but that is not an American Craftsman. My friends are furnishing a new home, and loved a chair they saw in the store. They wanted to buy FOUR of them at $ 1500 each, and decided to think about it overnight. They returned to the store the following day and asked the manager who the artist was. He replied, «It’s an American artist.» They asked again for the name of the artist, and the manager said, «First you buy the chair, THEN I tell you the name of the artist.» He continued yelling at them, saying they’ve been in business for 40 years and nobody appreciates what they do. Well of COURSE not! Most places that sell art will list the names of the artists on the pieces. I have never heard of «Buy first, get details after we have your money.» My friends left and the store lost a pretty large sale. Their practices are slimy and dishonest, and though they have some beautiful art in their gallery, I would not give them my money again.

Received a beautiful fish glazed sculpture a year ago and went back to buy another one… only to find that the ones they had on display to purchase were previously broken and then repaired without noting the repair for future customers. It was obvious though upon close inspection. We had to ask about the crack before we were told by the honest salesperson they were dropped and repaired. Too bad. I really liked this place.

We bought a beautiful sculpture at this gallery many years ago and a few other lovely items over the years. We hadn’t been there for quite awhile until last year, but we were rather turned off by the indifferent attitude of the staff at that time. We went there today and the two women were very pleasant, plus the selection is as nice as ever.

A lovely craft shop with quality high-quality artistic creations from various craftspeople in wood, glass, and metals. From large wall-mounts to freestanding floor art to jewelry to random curios, it is a candy store for the eyes. Richard is a true artist whose imaginative 3-D puzzles are treasures in anyone’s home. Though the Boxology creations may have become simpler and less whimsical than in the past, they are still clever and tactile gems. i have visited several times over the years and have never seen the same employees twice. Some have been tightly wound, others a little thick, but a few have been knowledgeable and even eager to point out some nice pieces.

Honest & great stuff. All items are reasonably priced with tags on the item! No pressure sales. Items shipped arrived in excellent shape. No scam or price gouging. Avoid Empire Gifts, next corner @ corner of 51st&7th,; they scam & are over priced. The 65 yr old man(owner) will lie to you. Pls keep away! Several locations– all the same. American Craftsman is a great store and the staff is helpful. Great experience.

I absolutely love this store! The service is outstanding and the items sold are stunningly beautiful. I had bought a tiny glass Christmas Tree and my hand hit the tree, and the stem broke. I tried piecing it back together with Crazy Glue, but it wouldn’t work. I guess you can’t glue glass back together. I was devastated, since I loved this tree. I called the store and they gladly replaced it with a new one, all with a smile and warm welcome when I went into the store. I am a customer for life and I can’t wait to make another visit to the store, to see what other beautiful objects I can purchase. Thank you American Craftsman!

Great place, super service. Was at the store on 12⁄11. Saw a couple items but did not purchase. Could not get them out of my head so I called and had them shipped. Very nice on the phone, order arrived without delay or issues. One item mass produced the other hand made. You can find a superb selection of collectibles and unusual art! Must stop and see when you are in the area.

Unilocal hid my previous review. Don’t know why. I said, «Cheap made in China crap mixed in with good American crafts. Staff says it’s all American, but it’s not. You can shop there, but be careful or you’ll get taken.» I have been there. I have been told that it was all American craftsmen. And the gallery has some good, well-known names in American crafts. But they also have made in China crap, and you really have to know what you are doing there. You have to know or research. So ask the staff who the artist is, type it into the Google on your smartphone, and find out if they are being honest with you or not.

I stumbled into this store while killing time before a show. I walked in and it reminded me of being in a large stall from the Union Square Holiday Market. This store is full of handmade crafts that you would find at fairs and trade shows. If you like hand made kaleidoscopes, boxes, vases and figurines. This is your place!

The jewelry better be sellin’ itself, cuz the staff doesn’t seem to want to do it. Dunno, I’ve been in to the 7th Ave. locale two times and been met with cordial yet disinterested attention. It may be of some help were staffers to actually know about the jewelry one would wish to buy and engage the customer thusly. On the other hand, maybe they are just used to rubes who waste their time, and that would account for their demeanor. I should wear a button on my lapel that reads: not a rube and have $$$. Other stuff on hand: carved wood products, glass baubles…

This place sells everything cool. Granted, I don’t know the proper names of these things, so bare with my descriptions. They sell ornate glass artwork, carved and intricate wooden boxes, jewelery, and things-that-don’t-look-like-what-they-are. The salespeople were totally obnoxious and uppity, but the products were fun to explore.

I love getting gifts here, and am pretty shocked it hasn’t been reviewed before. Slightly pricey but genuinely unique gifts for just about anyone. A lot of wood, emtal, and glass stuff. Vases, useless crap to put on bookshelves, etc. Also some absolutely amazing menorahs and mezzuzahs. The staff is very helpful, and during the holiday season they are open til 11:30PM Sunday-Thursday. It’s definitely on the pricey side, but well worth it.
