I’ve been to a lot of places in the area in the last three years, but this is definitely the best barbershop for short styles/fades in the UWS!

There was some initial miscommunication since I don’t speak Spanish, but when it came to talking about my hair the stylist got someone to translate, so don’t worry about that. And I ended up with a fantastic haircut for very little money – as short as I wanted it, which a lot of stylists are reluctant to do. This is definitely going to be my regular place. It is very loud – lots of noise, lots of loud talking and yelling – so if you have noise sensitivity issues stay far away, but it’s not dirty or offputting, just not fancy.

Do not be deterred by the untidiness… This place is so great. They mostly speak Spanish, but they also speak English. They were sweet and welcoming to this little blonde gringa. They also did exactly what I wanted without any arguments or trying to change my mind(which I was a little worried about bc my cut is asymmetrical). I will go back again and again. They only take cash, but they have an ATM inside! A+++

A $ 25 wash and set — well, hello! However, I realize that on the upper west side that may not be all that great of a deal since there is just so much competition from similar businesses. But if those prices could be found in DC on a Friday, I’d be a happy camper. Yes, this place is a little hectic. There were children running around, people eating carryout, and the space is super tight and cluttered. But if you can get past all that, you’ll leave with your hair looking pretty good. No frills here, so don’t come in looking for a bellini to land in your hand upon arrival. Come here for a wash and set and be grateful that you didn’t have to do it yourself.

Great value. This place isn’t fancy(or spotless) but I am pleased with the shampoo, cut, and dry for $ 30. Teresa somehow understood exactly what I needed even though I did not explain clearly. The important things: Split ends are gone and I don’t have a mullet. I was a little nervous because last time I went to a similar place the woman didn’t really cut my hair(which is why I went), she took about 3 snips after washing and drying and called it good. I have straight hair, better cut wet and desperately needed a trim. I left still needing a trim. My experience at Above Ground was completely different. She washed, cut, dried, and I left with healthy hair again. Bottom line: I will be back.
