Over the years living in New York City you are bound to run into some aspiring actors, and if you try to support them, that means visits to black box theater style venues. One such place is the 42st Workshop Theater. The theater is located on the fourth floor of the building, and once you get up there the waiting area is very comfortable. There are rest rooms near the entrance to the theater and very well kept. The area where the folks running the play checked for your name on the RSVP list was cute, almost like a mini version of a larger theater’s concession stand area. The actual performance space itself is nice. On a hot day, the air conditioning kept a room full of people nice and cool. The stage area is medium sized(I’ve seen bigger and smaller) and the actors looked like they had no problem moving about on stage. I enjoyed my time(and the play) at this theater and would definitely go back to see more friends perform!

I can’t tell you what the theatre looks like or recommend seeing a show or a reading here because I didn’t get farther than the lobby. Cindy S. called and RSVP’d for tonight’s reading weeks ago, as their site stated«Reservations are A MUST.» We showed up only to be told that we would be put on the wait list because her name wasn’t on the list. but, «I’ll try my hardest to get you in.» Well 20 minutes later, «I’m sorry *hands to forehead, looking downward*» I was confused. Are we playing charades? Are you sweating profusely? «You’re full?» the other wait listed party guessed? Bingo! While Cindy and I waited for the elevator, that patron was offered a seat for the show by way of folding chair. What about us? Should we have thrown in a name as well? O wait, we don’t know anyone at Workshop Theater. Whoops. She would be sitting with the other wait-listee whose date seemed to know the staff at the theatre. Here goes; I am going to play the borough card. I didn’t go all the way out there from [deep in] Brooklyn to deal with that! I’m sorry if the theatre does not have a better, more up to date, reservation system! Are we supposed to be punished for that? From the moment we checked in til the moment we left, the theatre exuded an air of self-importance that I just did not care for. «Are all of you on standby?» the ticket checker asks as everyone else has already filed into the theatre. There were only a handful of people on the wait-list. Is it really THAT hard to remember us all? At that point, there were only three of us sitting out there! What do you THINK we were doing? Also, way to go for trying her«best» to get us in; she forgot we were even out there! Definitely not a theatre that will go out of their way to accommodate their guests and I do not plan on venturing back here. As Cindy S. wrote, there ARE plenty of venues in the city that are on top of their game.
