Platter’s Chocolates has been around for decades. I’m not exactly sure how many decades, but when my older friends nostalgically reminisce about it and claim it has the sponge candy, I guess it’s been here pretty much forever. Probably my whole entire lifetime. I came in to scope it out and was pleasantly surprised, and mildly amused(I’ll get to why) by the end. I was getting together some sponge candy for out of town visitors and Platter’s came up as a recommendation for the best sponge candy to include. Inside the store, they had many varieties of sponge candy and other chocolate and gifts. They had individually wrapped candies as well as sets of half pounds and more. I went with the various individual wrapped options so as to give a few colleagues a taste of a variety of sponge candies(regular milk, dark, peanut butter, orange, etc). I myself tasted the regular milk sponge candy and can attest to its quality, although I’m far from a connoisseur myself. As far as I know, no one really knows why sponge candy became WNY candy. I’m not sure I like it, but I appreciate its unique place in our region’s heritage(still not sure why though!). Platter’s is a great local business for chocolate-related gifts and goodies. They have a parking lot too!

OMG, I am sooo addicted to their dark chocolate covered pretzels!!! So good, lots of chocolate. Their sponge and coconut clusters are fantastic, too.

okay, so i’ve never tried anything here other than the sponge candy, but their orange sponge candy is to die for! i know every chocolate store in western new york claims it makes the best sponge candy, but platter’s can actually back that up. for anyone who doesn’t live in north tonawanda, believe me when i say it’s worth the hike out there. in the summer, platter’s is also an ice cream shop. i have to try their orange flavored hot fudge topping next year. four stars instead of five because their hours are pretty limited(open until 5pm on weekdays, 10 – 2 on saturdays, closed sundays). on the flip side, i have seen their 8 oz sponge candy boxes being sold at local tops and cvs stores(like the ones on payne avenue in the mid-city plaza).
