It’s nice to have a dimsum place in the ‘burbs, but ultimately not that impressed with the tight, somewhat cold and dry shrimp dumplings, nor the lack of rice noodle rolls at a not-too-late time of 1:30p on a weekend, nor the meagre portion of gailan Chinese vegetables doused in oyster sauce. Nonetheless one can have a pleasant, more calm dim sum experience than you might get in C-town, and enjoy feasting your eyes on the gild-rimmed plates.

We came here because we wanted to try their dim sum. Not a lot of dim sum choices but we didn’t have to wait for a table at lunch time on a Sunday.

Weekend yum cha — quick service and reasonable prices… food a little bland but overall easy experience… no long queue even on mothers day.

I did take out for the first time in a while. For the amount of food that I got, it was a bit over priced. Also the calamari and the lobster was cold. And their was very little lobster in the dish. Not as impressed as i used to be.

Came here for both regular lunch and dim sum(weekend lunch time) The lunch was fine. Not the best, but decent. Dim Sum was great. Lots of selections, freshly made, very good. I know that the dim sum carts are the authentic way, but the idea of carts was the same as food under a heat lamp, not fresh(some dim sum carts aren’t steam carts, so the items are just getting colder and colder as the person go around with the cart). Prefer made-to-order dim sum.

If I could give 0 stars I would. The service is non-existent, food is lowest quality I’ve had in years. I wish I could post a picture of a soup bowl, it had cracks all around the edge. Chicken wings were over-fried. Jumbo hot and sour soup for two was nothing more than same as regular with a few shrimps in it. The dishes marked with the red star for spicy were not spicy at all. The restaurant was empty, just two of us and two more couples, but the waitress made it feel like she was overworked. My only question is: how do they survive in ever demanding Newton Centre? We are not coming back, that is for sure.

I had a dinner meeting and chose Jumbo Seafood for the seafood. The menu is large and tries to make sure patrons who want classics can have classics. My goal was to stick to seafood as that is what makes this place a destination. The restaurant was empty and the prices were neither high or low given the neighborhood. That is always a concern. The service was acceptable and there was a delay starting service. Recommend the Jumbo hot and sour soup with seafood — it was definitely worth the cost and made the entire meal. Went on a cold night and probably could have just had this as a starter. The seafood dumplings were amazing as well and the person I had dinner with remarked that they were special. This is something I don’t find at many restaurants in this region. The main course was very much on point and of good quality — just stick to seafood and enjoy something different. So. I will go back and have learned what to focus on at this restaurant in addition to Dim Sum…

This place is great. We went to this place for a friend’s birthday and we couldn’t be more happy with the food. The food is great and not only is the service good, the speed at which the food arrives to the table is great. The food isn’t pricey at if you come with a big group since everyone orders something and shares.

Jumbo used to be terrific, but sadly this has changed. Our last several meals have been awful. We tried them again the other day, and were still disappointed. It is 10 minutes from our house, but even the convenience cannot overcome the bad food.

I really went into this place with high hopes. I’ve ordered takeaway from here before and thought it was okay. But is okay… okay? I figured, «it must be better if you actually eat there!?!» I was wrong. First impressions can be everything. The restaurant was half-filled. The table I was led to had food crumbs/bits on the table top(maybe cleanliness isn’t their strong suit). The Chinese couple at the table next to me was wiping down their dinner plates with their napkins(yikes!). The bathroom was borderline third-world-country. Service was rather inattentive. Reviewing a place like this breaks my heart. It’s clearly family-run, as the kids were in a section of the restaurant doing their homework. A cute family was in the back room celebrating their newborn daughter with a large group of friends. A few people at the bar were being friendly to one another(always nice to see conversation rather than silence at a bar). I was noticing these things and wishing this Newton mom-and-pop could shine… until the fruit fly landed onto my Mapo Tofu bowl. The food? Sure, it was okay… again, just okay. Sadly I won’t be returning unless there’s a sudden change at this restaurant for the better.

Excellent authentic Chinese food in the suburbs. My family comes her a lot when we don’t want to drive into Chinatown. The menu has a combination American Chinese and authentic Chinese — so ask for the authentic options if that’s what you are interested in. Beer, wine and cocktails available also.

I ate at the restaurant on Sunday, August 27, 2015. The service was terrible especially with only two tables to wait on. The floors were dirty and the bathroom was filthy. The toilet had not been flushed from whomever used it before me. I have to admit the food was good. The television was loud and I did not care to be entertained by a sports channel for which the waiter was watching.

I have been there many times over the last few years. It was a place that we would enjoy getting sushi and food. Now it look like they are getting ready to close. The whole left hand side of the bar is being used as the office(a messy office) the waiter that handles the bar needs to stop rubbing his nose and wash his shirt.(Not kidding 30 times while we waited for takeout and had a drink) also when ordering the warm Saki they take it from a box of wine behind the bar and refill the bottle. The box looked moldy and after they microwave the crap out of it in the bottle it can not be picked up. I was not going to write this because we did like this place very much. It needs to be sold/renovated and reopened under new management.

Was in the area and was hungry, so figured why not? Menu looked decent, but the fact the place was EMPTY on a fri at lunch with so many people and businesses around should have given me a clue. Was seated and ordered pretty quick, the lunch specials come with soup so I ordered the wonton. When it arrived it was a lousy broth with undercooked wontons, and LETTUCE! Who puts lettuce in soup?! Disgusting. O ordered the combo that had scallop, chicken and shrimp. When it arrived, the scallop tasted off, and when I got halfway through my plate, I found a long black hair in the dish!!! Gross!!! I immediately notified the waitress who took the plate and had 3 people inspect it. Like seriously? Im BALD!!! The owner came over with the phone at his ear and mumbled«so what u want? More food??» I called him a f$&@ing idiot, said all I wanted was an apology, and he would not give me one. So I walked out… STAYAWAY!!! I’m sure this place will be closed soon enough…

The food didn’t get me sick. Service was bearable. It is just American Chinese-looking food. Not Chinese food. Not my thing. I only went, because of a friends invitation. I would not come here to enjoy a meal that I have to pay for. There may be others that can be happy here — not me.

Hard to say this is a fair review since this place probably ought to be judged on the seafood(which I didn’t sample) but from what I tried, I wasn’t a fan. :( I ordered the Broccoli w/Garlic Sauce, which came with a ton of other vegetables(mushrooms, peas, bamboo shoots, bell peppers, etc.). There wasn’t that much broccoli in fact, about a 1:3 ratio with the other veggies, so I felt it misleading to call this a broccoli dish vs. a «vegetable» dish. More importantly, the sauce had some kind of five-spice-like flavor to it(that licorice/anise taste), which I really can’t stand, so it was a bit too«authentic» perhaps to my Americanized tastes. I took a few bites and couldn’t get past that flavor. The spring rolls were good though overly fried so a bit too greasy and the fried rice was okay, not great(the peas were very undercooked). My dining companion had beef w/broccoli which he said was amazing & chicken fingers, which he didn’t like. They gave us regular cokes instead of diet, and also no rice came with our delivery(make sure to order rice as it doesn’t come automatically with entrees) so we had to call them back. Try it for seafood perhaps, but beware that this isn’t your Americanized take-out kinda spot.

Zero stars — absolute awful experience****** If you want okay food and awful service then this is the place for you. If you enjoy being yelled at then bring friends and family too. For my part I will go to Mandarin or any one of a number of other restaurants in the area. I am a regular at this place more so out of convenience than anything else. I know that the service is usually mediocre at best so a majority of the time we order take out. Last night we decided that we would go in with a group of about 11 kids and 9 adults which clearly tested the operational ability of this establishment. Having sat for two hours and 10 minutes and only receiving some of our appetizers and drinks we decided that we have had enough. We had watched table after table receive their food and had inquired on more than one occasion only to be repeatedly told«it was on its way.» We asked for our bill and indicated that we did not want our food. As we were paying the $ 350 tab the owner began to berate us stating that«given the size of our party and that we had asked for our appetizers to come first» that we should expect no better. He indicated that it was«our fault for the delay.» This only served to empower the waitress who also joined in the fray by raising her voice and yelling that«this was our fault.» The idea that we could endure such horrible service and then get yelled at as a bonus is completely perplexing to me. I can only deduce that they believe that their food is so good that they can treat customers like garbage. Considering that the food is only on the«okay» and there are many other options in Newton I would think that this attitude will impact business. As far as I’m concerned and as far as those in our party are concerned(all of which reside in Newton Center) we are going to boycott.

ZEROSTARS I just had the worst dining experience of my life. I was with a large party, seated at 6:00 P.M. We placed our order by 6:30, sat back, and witnessed the worst service in the history of dining. Over the two hours that we sat and waited, a few appetizers(and sufficient alcohol to pad the bill) trickled out. We watched expectantly as entrée after entrée sailed past our table, to customers who arrived as late as ninety minutes after us. After an hour of waiting, we inquired as to the status of our order, and we were told that our ‘disorganized’ manner of ordering led to the delay. We made a second inquiry forty five minutes later, and got an identical reply. At this point, we simply asked for to pay for the food that we had received. Again, rather than adopting a remotely apologetic tone, the owner/manager and the waiters berated us. NEVERGOHERE.

I’m beginning to see a trend here; our first visits to a small number of restaurants were outstanding, and thus followed quickly by another eagerly anticipated trip, only to be disappointed the second time around. Such is the case with Jumbo Seafood. On the first visit, The hot and sour soup with seafood for two was great. The house special«eggplant and tofu with shrimp mousse in delectable sauce» was to die for. The eggplant and tofu were wrapped together in some kind of tasty batter and lightly fried, and presented together. wow. The sauce surely was delectable. The chicken in spicy ginger sauce was superb. The service was good. We decided to return the very next night. OOPS. One person in our second party was allergic to shrimp, so we inquired of the eggplant dish, «can the same thing, but without the shrimp mousse, be done, served fried and wrapped together? reply: «Yes it can.» result: total disaster. not prepared in the same fashion as requested, but instead just eggplant and tofu in sauce. It didn’t seem delectable this time around. Chewy eggplant skin, bland tofu, and thoroughly uninspired total effect. Miserable, actually. The pan seared ravioli appetizer was ok, but nothing special. The beef in spicy orange sauce was so tough, I thought we should request a chainsaw to cut it. The only question was, gasoline or electric chainsaw? But honestly, the flavor of the orange sauce was good. The service, above and beyond the bad info on the eggplant dish, generally left us cold, including the waiter keeping the extra two bucks in change we had requested back, on top of an already calculated and plentiful tip. Giving him the benefit of the doubt, as he might have misunderstood«change please» for«keep the change,» and the fact that it was only two bucks, we decided to let it go. I guess we’re making a fuss about it here, instead, for you to read and consider. I would imagine the management would have preferred us to take the earlier option, and handle it in-house. But getting sneered at by the young waiter over two bucks did not appeal. And, we won’t be back.
