Yesterday was my second time at Perro Salado, the food each time was excellent, the avocado frites are delicious, guacamole super fresh, quesadillas yummy. Margaritas can be tricky if they’re not made right —– not an issue here they are very tasty! The blood orange margarita is my fav Both times I sat at the bar, the first time the back bar which has about eight seats, bartender was attentive and didn’t hover, was on point Second time we sat at the front bar,(5 seats) Zach, the bartender was congenial, made a great drink and provide a great service. My only gripe would be from a customer service perspective. The restaurant serves brunch on Sunday till 3pm and then closes till 5 when they re-open for dinner at 5pm. We arrived at the restaurant at 4:50 … yesterday it was –7 degrees with a much colder windchill(–20) in Newport– The employees that were in the restaurant wouldn’t allow us inside until exactly 5 o’clock even though there were 3 people sitting at the back bar enjoying cocktails while they waited for 5 o’clock to order dinner, now I get they don’t want people hanging around the very tiny front entranceway because it is very tight spot right inside the door but have some compassion for the folks that want to spend $ 275.00 in your restaurant!(That does include a very generous tip to the bartender) I mean come on! it was –20 with the windchill — next time I’ll visit in the summer and enjoy the deck rather than risk freezing waiting for the door to open!

This place has a really fun environment. Set up within the rooms of an old house, the restaurant is homey and comfortable. We ordered chips and guac, avocado fries, and lobster and chicken quesadillas. The appetizers were really good. The lobster quesadilla was alright; the chicken was probably better. Our waitress was super nice and was helpful with recommendations. The atmosphere was lively and fun, and the menu was well-priced.

Every time I’m in Newport, I have to come here. I can’t go anywhere else because the food is soooooo good and in winter it feels like you’re in someone’s house it’s cool like that.

Big fan of Perro Salado. I’ll come here to get my margarita and guacamole fix every so often. The restaurant itself is hidden inside a historic house right by the Newport harbor. It feels like home the minute you walk in, warm with dimmed lighting and stove fires blazing in the colder months. Each different room in the house has a different set up of tables. There’s a first floor with two bars, indoor seating, an outdoor patio open in the summer and also an upstairs with more seating. I usually get the guacamole which is served with house made chips and plantains or the avocado fries. As for main dish, I most recently got the lobster quesadilla and it was perfect! Just the right amount of cheese and mushroom to compliment the lobster meat and toasted well. It’s served with a nice green salad on the side. That ran for about $ 15. If you’re looking for something on the cheaper side they have an awesome $ 10 menu which consists of quesadilla, tostada, and some others with your choice of seasoned meat. And can’t forget drinks! We always wind up getting pitchers of the classic margarita but you can choose from a few different styles like cucumber or blood orange. The margaritas are definitely filling though so beware! One pitcher is normally a good option for a group of 3 if you want to have two each. I would check out Perro Salado if you’re in Newport and craving some good quality Mexican food!

We were in Newport for our anniversary, and our Innkeeper highly recommended Perro Salado. We weren’t feeling Mexican the first night, but walked by it wandering around after dinner and it looked charming so we decided to try it the next night. Glad we did– it was fantastic– so much more than your salsa and margarita Mexican joint. I had a delicious drink made with bulleit rye off their cocktail list– a total hit and I am picky and hate anything too sweet, etc. we split the guac and chips– bring a small army with you because it was huge! I think I ate 6 avocados but we couldn’t stop snacking on it because the guacamole was perfect. We were pretty full so split a salad next, which was also very good. I had wanted to try the pesto halibut, but no room! We came back the next night– had had a late lunch but felt like drinks and a snack and really just liked the ambiance, very cozy in an old house with a warm and lively atmosphere. We split the ribs, and were literally gnawing on the bones they were so good. Make a reservation as this place is busy. Service was on point though, never waited for anything. The outdoor patio looked charming for nice weather, all strung up with lights and kind of tucked away. A highlight of our trip!

Man, I’m bummed to write this because I had high expectations for this place and had been looking forward to coming here since I moved to town. I will say I’ve lived in Southern California for the past 10 years so my bar for Mexican food is fairly high; that being said, you should never walk away from a Mexican place and think to yourself«that was really bland.» The menu kind of threw me when I first sat down — the special for the night was a duck dish with smashed potatoes, the flat-iron steak entre was served with glazed carrots, and the fajita entre is served with lamb(not necessarily standard fare for a Mexican restaurant). — I ordered a Cadilac Margarita and it was pretty bad, it tasted entirely like lime juice and I pretty much gulped it down with a puckered face($ 9). — The Chips and Salsa($ 4) were decent, nothing special but not bad. The only thing missing was salt; the salsa had a good flavor from the chile but was still pretty bland. — The Carnitas Quesadilla came smothered in crema and a green sauce and was missing one main component — chese(which is fairly important in a quesadilla). It was basically the meat sandwiched in a store-bought flour tortilla and smothered in sauce to enhance the flavor. I pulled some of the meat out and had it on it’s own, again not flavorful. Maybe I came on an off night or just got the wrong items(although all should really be staples). Not sure if they didn’t season their food to accomodate for the clientele’s taste, although I strongly believe food should always be seasoned properly and served as such. I’d be willing to give it another shot out of hope, but if it’s the same experience I’ll have to pass in the future.

Get the quesadilla. I had the pork, it was dry… my wife had the quesadilla and I immediately had food remorse. The building is cool, I love when they put a restaurant in an old building and just use each room as it was, without blowing walls out, etc. Love the reggae music(Toots!) and tequila drinks.

This place is legit. We’ve been every time we’re in Newport and yet to be disappointed. The margaritas come any way you’d like them so we’d recommend you keep them flowing by the pitcher! All of the appetizers are tremendous, but the sticky ribs will make your tastebuds explode. Make a reservation and enjoy the evening!

This is a wonderful option for happy hour, Sunday funday, or just a nice lunch or dinner. The sticky pork ribs are so tender and perfectly cooked that they can easily be eaten with a fork! They are fall off the bone and a must try. The blood orange margaritas are awesome. They are fairly strong and not overly sweet. Finally, I found the service to be up beat and knowledgeable. I look forward to stopping in on another visit to Newport soon.

Stopped by here on the 4th of July for lunch. Be prepared to wait because it is a really small restaurant. They’re not very lenient at the bar, they really only give out tequila and $ 40 pitchers filled with God knows what. I asked for a Long Island thinking it’d be simple to make and the waitress said we don’t really do that here. well okay then. The atmosphere here is kinda uncomfortable, snobby staff and patrons with an «I’m better then you» attitude. We got nachos and avocado fries to start — both were very small portions and to be honest overpriced. The avocado fries were amazing though. We also each got a shrimp taco, which was fresh but very messy with a huge chunk of shrimp and too much guacamole. Overall I don’t think I’ll ever come back. It’s too bad they closed there sister restaurant cause that place was a gem.

STICKYRIBS! That’s all I really need to out in this review, but then I’d be missing the other delicious dishes. AVOCADOFRIES! Who would have thought this? Cut an avocado, batter it and deep fry it. Enough said. Margarita any way you want them… by the pitcher. Cucumber margarita. Jalapeño margarita.

I was very impressed! I hadnt read great reviews and im picky about my mexican! lol but we stopped in on a friday night, 5 of us and we were seated right away. I got the meatball dish, and it was so delicious. It was on the small plate section of the menu but it was a good amount. We also got a pitcher of the blood orange margaritas. I went on a sunday as well and for the fish tacos and a pitcher of house margaritas. this dish was also yummy. We were a group of 4 and we were seated outside which is gorgeous and peaceful. Overall a great experience!

Great outdoor space. Friendly service & menu is appealing. Appetizers were OK not great and the fish was DRY cooked like extra well done steak. Dry & difficult to choke down. Other than the dish having to much chili powder n paprika their was no flavor & way to much onion & tomato. I wanted to give them 5 stars but can’t.

The Quick: Fantastic and different Mexican food in an old colonial house. The outside garden patio is small but charming and in the spring the tree rains cherry blossoms. The Details: Great cocktails offered by the pitcher or glass(my recommendation– cucumber jalapeño margarita or the spicy Bloody Maria). For brunch, the spot offers your classic Mexican favorites along with some original flair. The Crabby Benny was fantastic and served the side of jalapeño hash– loaded with Jalapeños and bursting with flavor. Guacamole was also very good and a generous portion, we split between three people in each had a good amount. The Damage: Brunch entrée + app to split came to about $ 20/each(without drinks) worth trying.

I visited this place on the RI Red Food Tours, and it’s the first(and only) Mexican Food restaurant I’ve visited east of… well…the first in New England.(I grew up in New Mexico and I miss our red and green chile like an Italian misses true mozzarella. And no one here even knows what red and green chile IS.) Anyhow, as with my take on Mexican food restaurants outside of New Mexico… 1. It’s not real Mexican food 2. It’s still very delicious 3. It’s a super cool setting We tried these pork ribs that were marinated for maaaaany hours in a coca-cola and brown sugar sauce, and they were SODELICIOUS(after I picked the cilantro off. Surprisingly, adding cilantro to a dish does not make it «Mexican.» However! Kudos for making the cilantro removable!) The meat fell right off the bone, and I basically licked the plate. Nice work, chefs. The restaurant looks like it’s in a building that’s part house, part treehouse. Friendly people. Flavored margaritas. It’d be a chill spot have a pitcher and enjoy the evening.

This place was a really solid four stars and were the prices just a little more reasonable, I think it might have even managed to get that fifth. My wife and I had a great eating experience at Perro Salado. Our waitress was attentive without being overbearing, the space was divided into a number of smaller rooms that made it feel intimate(though it did make finding the bathroom a challenge!), and the food we had was great. After seeing everyone else raving about the avocado fries, we had to try them and they did NOT disappoint. We also started with a side of guacamole which was fine, but maybe overshadowed by the chips that came with it. For dinner, I had the fish tacos which were fresh, spicy, and perfectly balanced. The size of the tacos themselves were great also, though they didn’t come with anything on the side(not that we needed it with all our starters!). Add to all of this both traditional and more innovative margaritas that were well executed and LARGE and it made a great meal. I’d definitely recommend this place, especially if you’re in Newport and want to take a break from some of the more traditional seafood places. Don’t miss the avocado fries or the margaritas. They are definitely worth the trip.

I had an excellent time here with my wife. To reiterate what some of the other reviewers noted before me — the food tastes fresh, there are a good selection of vegetarian options, and the Blood Orange Margs will kick your butt. The restaurant is nice and great for a date. There are a handful of smaller rooms inside with tables so it makes the place seem less crowded and more intimate. The lighting is turned down to make it romantic. However, the pitcher of blood orange maragitas turned an otherwise romantic night out into a tequila infused contest to eat as much tortilla chips and salsa as possible to sober up. The food was good. Not as good as my wife remembered from the last time she was here, but it was above average and they have some great choices which make it nicer than a standard Mexican restaurant with the straight forward enchilada and taco options. There are also some great bars right around the corner in case you want to go out after dinner and have a night on the town.

Highlights: avocado fries are delicious. Consist of avocado slices deep fried served with an aioli sauce. The food is generally very delicious. I usually get the fish and kale and bean salad. Fresh ingredients. Health options. Great for vegetarians and gluten free diners not for vegans. A little over priced. Just don’t go here expecting traditional Mexican food. It is certainly a twist on Mexican food. They have great cocktails, a decent beer selection and not bad wine. The bar is a laid back environment. One of my favorite things about this place, in addition to the food, is the building itself. It’s old. Right next to the old jail. Creates a rustic enjoyable experience. I’ve been five or six times now and keep coming back.

Two words: Avocado fries. How is this not a thing yet?!? I also ordered the braised beef enchiladas, which were delicious – tender meat, flavorful sauce, and smothered in cheese, which I like. I had a bit of trouble with the beer, but it was just a stroke of bad luck – my first choice had just kicked and the porter I ordered kicked during my second pint. They only have 5 rotating drafts, but I’m not the type of beer-lover who only cares about how obscure or deep the selection is – as long as I can find something I like, I’m happy. And I did. The food was awesome and I liked the ambiance, which has a cozy, dark feel. My one complaint is that the back bar where we were seated was pretty cold. I kept my coat on all through dinner… next time they remodel they should think about updating the insulation!
